Hostel (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
from Sony Pictures
Well-made for the genre--the excessive-skin-displayed-before-gruesome-bloody-torture-begins genre--Hostel follows two randy Americans (Jay Hernandez, Friday Night Lights, and Derek Richardson, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd) and an even randier Icelander (Eythor Gudjonsson) as they trek to Slovakia, where they're told beautiful girls will have sex with anyone with an American accent. Unfortunately, the girls will also sell young Americans to a company that offers victims to anyone who will pay to torture and murder. To his credit, writer/director Eli Roth (Cabin Fever) takes his time setting things up, laying a realistic foundation that makes the inevitable spilling of much blood all the more gruesome. The sardonic joke, of course, is that Americans are worth the most in this brothel of blood because everyone else in the world wants to take revenge upon them. This dark humor and political subtext help set Hostel above its more brainless sadistic compatriots, like House of Wax or The Devil's Rejects. In general, though, there's something lacking; horror used to suggest some threat to the spirit--today's horror can conceive of nothing more troubling than torturing the flesh. For aficionados, Hostel features a nice cameo by Takashi Miike, director of bloody Japanese flicks like Audition and Ichi the Killer. --Bret Fetzer

Firehouse Dog (Full Screen Edition)
by Todd Holland
from 20th Century Fox
Adolescence is an emotionally stormy time for kids, but it's especially so for Shane (Josh Hutcherson), a teenager being raised by single firefighter father Connor (Bruce Greenwood). Add the recent death of Shane's fire-captain uncle (Connor's brother) in the line of duty and the pending closure of their neighborhood "Dogpatch" fire station, and both Shane's propensity for skipping school and brooding in his room and his father's obsession with work seem easily explainable. When a mutt called Dewey, really a very spoiled superstar dog named Rexxx who's been presumed dead after a parachuting stunt gone wrong, turns up in a burning building and is rescued by the Dogpatch crew, Connor puts Shane in charge of caring for the dog and finding its owner. Shane and Dewey clash immediately and Shane is extremely resentful toward both the dog and his father. However, Dewey's special talents (like skateboarding and trampoline jumping), combined with his good fire-fighting instincts, soon win the admiration and affection of Shane and the entire Dogpatch crew. A series of mysterious fires causes Shane and Connor to begin to really communicate and reconnect, but those fires also threaten their very lives. At the same time, Dewey's former owner discovers Dewey's true identity and demands the return of his superstar companion. An engaging dog story that explores the difficulties of growing up and dealing with personal tragedy, Firehouse Dog is a fun family film that's rated PG due to some mildly crude humor (think potty jokes), language, and action peril. --Tami Horiuchi

Exit Wounds
from Warner Home Video
One can always count on Steven Seagal to act as the repository of yesterday's action-film clichés, and Exit Wounds is yet another case in point. Seagal plays Detroit cop Orin Boyd, a lone wolf lawman who gets in the middle of his precinct's losing battle against police corruption. Taking on a powerful but crooked cop named Montini (David Vadim)--who is busy making deals with a rich gangster (DMX)--Boyd soon sends fists and feet flying while Tom Arnold provides the comic relief. Director Andrzej Bartkowiak surely had less fun guiding Seagal through slow-motion fight sequences than he did Jet Li in Romeo Must Die, but as compensation he gets to work with the mesmerizing DMX, who looks as though he has leading-man possibilities. Plenty of gratuitous gore, awful cop banter, and miles of cleavage courtesy of Jill Hennessy, who plays Boyd's tough-as-nails boss. --Tom Keogh

Angels in the Infield
by Robert King (III)
from Walt Disney Video
Three's a charm in this latest installment of Disney's angel franchise, which also includes Angels in the Outfield and Angels in the End Zone. While this family film never misses a chance to be stereotypical in its depiction of celestial beings--from white-winged angels to a red-horned devil--it is certain to warm the hearts of its intended audience. Seinfeld fans will enjoy another dose of Patrick Warburton, made famous in his role as Elaine's boyfriend, David Puddy. Here, he plays the pathetic yet endearing "Steady" Eddie Everett, a big league pitcher on a losing streak. As his career plummets, Eddie's wife (from whom he is separated), leaves him in charge of his estranged 13-year old ballet-loving daughter, Laurel (Brittney Irvin). An angry daughter and selfish father make for some tense beginnings, yet, as the ice melts, Laurel, who wants to restore her father's self-confidence, prays for some heavenly assistance. Her prayers are answered, sort of. Heaven's B-team of baseball angels, a bumbling group of benchwarmers led by angel Bob Bugler (David Alan Grier), are sent down to assist. In order to become a full-fledged angel, Bugler must earn his wings. He'd also love another chance at winning the pennant on Earth. As Laurel helps train this band of angelic misfits for championship baseball, a few miracles occur between an unlikely father-daughter pair. Comedic scenes abound, including an otherworldly ballet performance and a "sizzling" baseball finale. --Lynn Gibson
In the delightful tradition of ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD, a fledgling angel swoops down to boost the career of a big-league pitcher on a losing streak. David Alan Grier (JUMANJI, TV's IN LIVING COLOR) stars as the celestial coach called in to assist struggling pitcher Patrick Warburton (TV's SEINFELD). Brittney Irvin (TV's LITTLE MEN) finds her prayers answered when a flock of outrageous angelic teammates crash her father's roster for what may be their best season yet! It's time to step up to the plate for hilarious, heavenly fun the whole family will enjoy ... ANGELS IN THE INFIELD is a hit!

A Saintly Switch
by Peter Bogdanovich
from Walt Disney Video
This delectable family flick (produced by Disney TV), which dishes up ample guffaws all around, is based on the premise that empathy comes only when we've walked a mile in another man's--or woman's--shoes. For Sara Anderson (Vivica Fox of TV's "City of Angels"), those shoes are football cleats belonging to her husband, quarterback Dan Anderson (played by David Alan Grier of TV's "In Living Color"). At the film's opening, Dan and Sara are experiencing marital fallout. According to their preteen children, Clark and Annette, Mom thinks Dad is a dork who would rather travel around the country just to push some ball across the field than spend time with his family. And Dad thinks Mom's job--staying at home and teaching art history on the side--would be a cinch. When a new position with the Saints takes the family to New Orleans, the Andersons purchase a dilapidated mansion that once belonged to a sorceress. There's still a bit of magical potion left in the attic, so, as a last-ditch effort to save their parents' marriage, Clark and Annette cast a spell on Mom and Dad. The next morning Dan and Sara awaken to discover they inhabit each other's bodies. In order to prevent anyone's discovery of their predicament, Dan-as-Sara now has to contend with nail polish, makeup, and a first-trimester pregnancy. Equally difficult, Sara-as-Dan must report for football training without a notion of how the game is played. The stage is set for gaffes galore and some priceless commentary on the differences between the sexes. The remaining question is whether the children can reverse the spell of the saintly switch without breaking the magic of a much-improved marriage. (Ages 7 and older.) --Lynn Gibson
Get ready for a hilarious family misadventure starring Vivica A. Fox (ELLA ENCHANTED) and David Alan Grier (TV's LIFE WITH BONNIE, JUMANJI) as a mom and dad who take each other for granted ... until their kids secretly discover the spell book of a notorious New Orleans voodoo queen! But instead of getting their parents to appreciate each other ... they've magically switched places. Mom goes off to play professional football while Dad attempts to cook and clean! Your entire family will love laughing along with A SAINTLY SWITCH'S Anderson family as they learn what it's like to walk in someone else's shoes ... or, in this case, cleats and fuzzy slippers!
