Blade (New Line Platinum Series)
from New Line Home Video
The recipe for Blade is quite simple; you take one part Batman, one part horror flick, and two parts kung fu and frost it all over with some truly campy acting. What do you get? An action flick that will reaffirm your belief that the superhero action genre did not die in the fluorescent hands of Joel Schumacher. Blade is the story of a ruthless and supreme vampire slayer (Wesley Snipes) who makes other contemporary slayers (Buffy et al.) look like amateurs. Armed with a samurai sword made of silver and guns that shoot silver bullets, he lives to hunt and kill "Sucker Heads." Pitted against our hero is a cast of villains led by Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff), a crafty and charismatic vampire who believes that his people should be ruling the world, and that the human race is merely the food source they prey on. Born half-human and half-vampire after his mother had been attacked by a blood-sucker, Blade is brought to life by a very buff-looking Snipes in his best action performance to date. Apparent throughout the film is the fluid grace and admirable skill that Snipes brings to the many breathtaking action sequences that lift this movie into a league of its own. The influence of Hong Kong action cinema is clear, and you may even notice vague impressions of Japanese anime sprinkled innovatively throughout. Dorff holds his own against Snipes as the menacing nemesis Frost, and the grizzly Kris Kristofferson brings a tough, cynical edge to his role as Whistler, Blade's mentor and friend. Ample credit should also go to director Stephen Norrington and screenwriter David S. Goyer, who prove it is possible to adapt comic book characters to the big screen without making them look absurd. Indeed, quite the reverse happens here: Blade comes vividly to life from the moment you first see him, in an outstanding opening sequence that sets the tone for the action-packed film that follows. From that moment onward you are pulled into the world of Blade and his perpetual battle against the vampire race. --Jeremy Storey
Wesley Snipes plays a half-mortal, half-immortal charged with ridding the earth of a race of vampires led by Stephen Dorff in this action-packed blockbuster.

Candyman (Special Edition)
from Sony Pictures
A children's ghost story comes to terrifying life in this gut-wrenching thriller about a graduate student whose research into modern folklore summons the spirit of the dead. Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) laughs when she interviews college freshmen about their superstitions. But when she hears about Candyman a slave spirit with a hook hand who is said to haunt Chicago's notorious Cabrini-Green housing project she thinks she has a new twist for this thesis. Braving the gang-ridden territory to visit the site of a brutal murder Helen arrogantly assumes Candyman can't really exist... until he appears igniting a string of terrifying tragic slayings. But the police don't believe in monsters and they charge Helen with the grisly crimes. Based on a story by Clive Barker and skillfully written and directed by Bernard Rose, Candyman rises above most horror films by eerily suggesting that some urban legends--in this case a particularly frightening one--have a spooky basis in reality. The legend of the Candyman is a potent one around the high-rise tenements of Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing complex, where the residents speak of a dark, ominous figure who appears when his victims say his name five times in front of a mirror, then mercilessly slashes them to death. Upon learning that the Candyman is rumored to live in one of the vacant tenements, a University of Illinois researcher (Virginia Madsen) investigates a recent murder at Cabrini-Green. She learns that the Candyman (played by Tony Todd) is both unreal and chillingly real--a supernatural force of evil empowered by those who believe in his legend. He is a killer made flesh by the belief of others, and the young researcher's investigation is a threat to his existence. What happens next? We wouldn't dare spoil the chills, but rest assured that writer-director Rose has tapped into a wellspring of urban angst and fear, and Candyman serves up its gruesome frights with a refreshing dose of intelligence. --Jeff Shannon

Debbie Does Dallas Uncovered
by Francis Hanly
from New Video Group
Those looking for titillation from this droll observation of the sociological impact of one of the most notorious porn films of all time will probably be disappointed. Broadcast on British television in 2005, Debbie Does Dallas Uncovered (originally known as The Curse of Debbie Does Dallas) is nonetheless a good-natured little documentary along the lines of Inside Deep Throat that takes a fun, matter-of-fact look at the adult film industry in one of its early incarnations (the 1970s). The film attempts to uncover the "mystery" of starlet Bambi Woods who made only a few other appearances in porn before disappearing into obscurity. It also explores the mob angle and some of the dangers associated with organized crime and the FBI's interest once porn became more lucrative and mainstream. More entertaining is the sense of nostalgia that comes through in the modern-day interviews with those who participated in the making and marketing of Debbie, and how a micro-budget movie that by all rights should have quickly faded away became a huge hit and icon of porn. Smart, gray-haired paunchy guys watching themselves perform with 30 years' perspective seem bemused, wistful, and maybe a little bit embarrassed about the wacky way they made a few bucks (only one of Debbie's original actresses agreed to be interviewed). The film takes no moral stance, even though many of the interview subjects speak seriously about the victimization that has always gone hand-in-hand with the adult entertainment business. While not as clever, insightful, or stylish as Inside Deep Throat, Debbie Does Dallas is still an engaging glimpse at a tawdry time and place that produced a classic in the annals of the adult film history. As an interesting extra and counterpoint to the history lesson, the disc includes the bonus feature, Diary of a Porn Virgin, which documents the tale of two women who make dramatic career changes into the modern porn industry. --Ted Fry
It was a bombshell that titillated and provoked the American imagination at the time of its release. Now the 70s cult classic Debbie Does Dallas gets its due in DEBBIE DOES DALLAS: UNCOVERED a fascinating peek at the turbulent lives and times surrounding the world s most famous porn flick. Featuring interviews with the original cast as well as producers directors and other leading lights of the porn world DEBBIE DOES DALLAS: UNCOVERED offers rare and deeply personal insights into the dark secrets of the adult entertainment industry including the drugs the exploitation and the prurient thrill of having sex in front of a camera. The film also takes a smart fresh look at the intense scrutiny and outrage that Debbie Does Dallas provoked from a lawsuit filed by the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders to the FBI s investigation of the film s Mafia funders. And with help from the few people who knew her in the porn world filmmaker Francis Hanly probes the 25-year-old mystery of star Bambi Woods the small-town girl who played "Debbie" and then mysteriously disappeared never to grace the screen again. Neither dismissive nor uncritical of pornography DEBBIE DOES DALLAS: UNCOVERED audaciously ventures into tawdry territory with chutzpah and humor turning an artless but groundbreaking film into a fascinating discussion of sex and culture.
