Bonnie and Clyde

Bonnie and Clyde by Arthur Penn from Warner Brothers/Seven Arts

One of the landmark films of the 1960s, Bonnie and Clyde changed the course of American cinema. Setting a milestone for screen violence that paved the way for Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch, this exercise in mythologized biography should not be labeled as a bloodbath; as critic Pauline Kael wrote in her rave review, "it's the absence of sadism that throws the audience off balance." The film is more of a poetic ode to the Great Depression, starring the dream team of Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the titular antiheroes, who barrel across the South and Midwest robbing banks with Clyde's brother Buck (Gene Hackman), Buck's frantic wife Blanche (Estelle Parsons), and their faithful accomplice C.W. Moss (the inimitable Michael J. Pollard). Bonnie and Clyde is an unforgettable classic that has lost none of its power since the 1967 release. --Jeff Shannon

          The Prophecy

The Prophecy by John Frankenheimer from Paramount

John Frankenheimer updates the mutant-monster films of the 1950s with a modern environmental twist in this well-meaning but cliché-ridden late-'70s horror film. Robert Foxworth is so earnest it hurts as a rabble-rousing ghetto doctor who packs up his pregnant wife (Talia Shire) and heads out to the Maine woods to investigate claims of environmental pollution. That's the least of his concerns when a gooey mutant grizzly goes on the rampage and he joins forces with Native American activist Armand Assante (wearing his humorless resolve like war paint) to get out of the woods. Frankenheimer is a good director saddled with a bad, blunt script, and like a pro he delivers the requisite gore and even racks up the tension in a terrific opening chase. But even he can't overcome the clumsiest collection of deformed woodland creatures to claw their way through a monster movie. --Sean Axmaker

                  All Fall Down

All Fall Down by John Frankenheimer

All Fall Down is a memorable movie that never quite turns into a really good one. Its roots are in the American theater of the 1950s--in particular, William Inge's heavy-breathing contemplations of heartland family life--and the overemphatic school of live-TV drama that peaked in Playhouse 90. Director John Frankenheimer made his bones on Playhouse 90 (where producer John Houseman also worked), and though the early scenes in Key West show him relishing sunlight and a larger canvas, he's in his native element working out inventive ways to create tension in the deep-focus interiors of a middle-class Cleveland home.

This is the abode of one screwed-up clan: would-be radical dad (Karl Malden), monstrously domineering mom (Angela Lansbury), and a teenage son (Brandon de Wilde) preparing to become a novelist by copying down the parents' mutually lacerating dialogues as he eavesdrops via the kitchen dumbwaiter. What they all share is mindless adoration of mostly absentee elder son Berry-Berry (Warren Beatty), despite his persistent avoidance of them and his heartless willingness to exploit anybody for his personal advantage. Add an occasional houseguest named Echo (Eva Marie Saint), an angelically gorgeous yet self-styled old maid, and the gallery of grotesques is complete.

Malden and Saint were Elia Kazan alumni; de Wilde (the child in Shane) was just getting his footing as a young-adult actor; Beatty, in his third film, was perfecting his image as Hollywood's most ambitious and irresistible bad boy; and Lansbury was re-launching her career after taking time off to raise a family (she and Frankenheimer would soon make history with The Manchurian Candidate). The characters are all pretty creepy, and only William Inge--enlisted, post-Splendor in the Grass, to adapt James Leo Herlihy's novel--could love them. Yet the film does cast a spell, and mark the beginning of new or renewed vitality in several important careers. --Richard T. Jameson

Ralph and Annabell Willart (Karl Malden and Angela Lansbury) are a feuding couple who are constantly bickering over their worthless, good-for nothing son Berry-Berry (Warren Beatty). When Berry-Berry begins yet another meaningless love affair, this time with an older woman named Echo O'Brien (Eva Marie Saint), he really gets his parents at each other's throats. Directed by John Frankenheimer.
