A Bridge Too Far

A Bridge Too Far from United Artists

This massive 1977 adaptation by director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) of Cornelius Ryan's novel features an all-star cast in an epic rendering of a daring but ultimately disastrous raid behind enemy lines in Holland during the Second World War. A lengthy and exhaustive look at the mechanics of warfare and the price and futility of war, the film is almost too large for its aims but manages to be both picaresque and affecting, particularly in the performance of James Caan. The impressive cast includes Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, and Liv Ullmann among others. While not a classic war film, it nevertheless manages to be a consistently interesting and exciting adventure. --Robert Lane

Painstakingly recreated on actual battlefield locations and boasting a remarkable cast that includes Sean Connery Anthony Hopkins Sir Laurence Olivier and Robert Redford A Bridge Too Far accurately recaptures the monumental scope excitement and danger behind one of the biggest military gambles in history. The Whales of August

The Whales of August by Lindsay Anderson from MGM (Video & DVD)

Two of the greatest motion picture actresses of all time Bette Davis and Lillian Gish unite their legendary talents in this beautifully photographed intensely emotional drama that offers unexpected and quite marvelous rewards (The New York Times)!Libby (Davis) and Sarah (Gish) are widowed siblings who have vacationed for half a century at a seaside cottage in Maine. Now in their eighties the sisters have unexpectedly arrived at an impasse: While Sarah embraces change and the possibility of romance with a courtly Russian suitor (Vincent Price) the stubbornly bitter Libby rages at the inevitability of death. As the summer months wane can Libby and Sarah rediscover the powerful bonds of memory family and love?System Requirements:Running Time: 91 Min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA Rating: NR UPC: 027616896636 Manufacturer No: 1005342

Vincent Canby of The New York Times called The Whales of August "a cinema event." His generosity is understandable, given the film's main draw: two of the greatest actresses in movie history, whose careers extend back to the very beginnings of narrative. They are Lillian Gish and Bette Davis, and they are two of cinema's lovely, essential people... so it is painful to report that Mr. Canby's gallant review is not really justified by this trifle, a once-round-the-Golden Pond-lightly. Demanding Bette and dutiful Lillian are sisters living on the Maine coast; Vincent Price is a courtly suitor, and Ann Sothern and Harry Carey Jr. (the liveliest performers in the picture) are local folk. Directed by a great student of film, Lindsay Anderson (O Lucky Man!), the material is fatally soppy. In truth, this isn't a movie, it's a shrine to two giants in winter--well-intended, and best seen as a tribute. --Robert Horton

              Strumpet City

              Strumpet City from ACORN MEDIA

A panoramic saga of Dublin life during one of its most turbulent eras

From the drawing rooms of the bourgeoisie, where the well-to-do clung to Victorian notions of class and privilege, to the miseries of the tenements, where poor families crowded into single rooms, Dublin in the early 1900s was as combustible as bone-dry tinder. Then labor organizer and modern Irish hero Jim Larkin arrived to light the match.

This acclaimed Irish drama recreates the era through a cast of unforgettable characters from every part of city life. Country-girl Mary, for whom Dublin is the land of opportunity and love. Hard-working Fitz, model of the loyal and abused trade unionist. Wretched but colorful Rashers Tierney. The cultivated, self-righteous Bradshaws. Well-meaning but misguided Father O'Connor and jaded Father Giffley, movingly portrayed by stage and screen legend Cyril Cusack.

Based on the enduring and popular novel by James Plunkett, Strumpet City also stars Frank Grimes, David Kelly, and Bryan Murray, with special appearances by Peter Ustinov as King Edward VII and Peter O'Toole as Jim Larkin.

DVD SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE James Plunkett bio, historical background, and cast filmographies.

                    When the Sky Falls

When the Sky Falls by John Mackenzie from Lions Gate

This gray portrait of the Dublin underworld, produced in the United Kingdom, is a refreshing--though brutal--change from the usual aren't-they-quaint Hollywood portrayals of the Irish. Joan Allen stars as Sinead, a feisty reporter who is waging a crusade against the Dublin heroin trade. The story and character are based on real-life Irish reporter Veronica Guerin, but the movie is far from an idealized portrait. Allen lets Sinead's occasional cocky manner and foolhardiness show through as clearly as her convictions. While it is at times hampered by the constraints of budget (the soundtrack is particularly noticeable in that regard), When the Sky Falls offers a realistic portrayal of both the viciousness of a crime scene and the frustration of the police. Allen is more than ably backed by a terrific supporting cast of Irish actors. And yes, she does the accent just fine. This movie is not a masterpiece, but it's well worth a look. --Ali Davis
