Short Circuit

Short Circuit by John Badham from Image Entertainment

When a lightning bolt strikes a top secret experimental military robot, it comes to life and escapes to the home of a woman who tries to keep it from being \""repaired\"" by its computer-genius creator.
    Genre: Science Fiction
    Rating: PG
    Release Date: 23-MAR-2004
    Media Type: DVD

John Badham's family-oriented adventure comedy, though obviously hatched in the wake of E.T. and Star Wars, manages to create its own identity through a sweet tone and an affectionate sense of fun. Military robot Number 5, a well-armed killing machine, is zapped by lightning during a test and emerges with a consciousness, curiosity, a wacky sense of humor, and a new peace-loving philosophy. Ally Sheedy (who debuted in Badham's hit WarGames) is the animal lover whose home is sanctuary for a zoo-full of strays and who adopts the adolescent robot. Steve Guttenberg is the goofy but reclusive robotics designer who goes off in search of his creation to save him from the gun-happy army. The mix of gentle slapstick and innocent romance makes for a harmless family comedy. It veers toward the terminally cute, what with 5's hyperactive antics and E.T.-ish voice, and the mangled grammar of Guttenberg's East Indian sidekick (Fisher Stevens) threatens to become offensive, but Badham's breezy direction keeps the film on track. Sheedy and Guttenberg deliver spirited and engaging performances, but most importantly the robot emerges as a real person. Give credit to designer Syd Mead, an army of puppeteers and robotics operators, and the cartoony voice of Tim Blaney: Number 5 is alive. --Sean Axmaker

    It Takes Two

It Takes Two by Andy Tennant from Warner Home Video

Two young girls who happen to look identical bump into each other in the woods and decide to swap households so they can play matchmaker to their single parents.Running Time: 101 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: PG UPC: 085391460022

This first theatrical outing for the ubiquitous Olsen twins is their take on The Parent Trap meets The Prince and the Pauper. One plays a foster child under the care of a single social worker (Kirstie Alley) whose marital status prevents her from adopting her favorite charge. The other is the neglected daughter of a "bazillionaire" (Steve Guttenberg), who's about to marry a gold-digging socialite (played nastily by Jane Sibbett, Ross's first ex-wife on TV's Friends). The foster kid comes to a charity camp abutting the rich girl's summer estate and--presto--the identical strangers meet, hatch a plan to solve both their dilemmas, and switch identities. Directed by Andy Tennant (Ever After), this PG-rated film features some decent G-rated chemistry between Alley and Guttenberg and surprisingly uncloying performances by Mary-Kate and Ashley. The rating is for mild language. (Ages 5 and up) --Kimberly Heinrichs

      High Spirits

High Spirits by Neil Jordan from MGM (Video & DVD)

Peter O'Toole (Lawrence of Arabia, My Favorite Year) gives an exuberant performance in High Spirits. Peter Plunkett (O'Toole) hopes to save his mortgaged castle by turning it into a tourist attraction--the most haunted castle in Ireland. When American tourists arrive--among them Jack (Steve Guttenberg) and Sharon (Beverly D'Angelo), a couple whose marriage is rapidly disintegrating--Plunkett's tomfoolery arouses the real ghosts, who decide to give these interlopers everything they're asking for. But when Jack accidentally helps a beautiful ghost named Mary (Daryl Hannah), she decides he's the man to help her break the curse she's been suffering for 200 years. High Spirits is an odd foray into comedy by director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire). The special effects are clumsy, but the strong supporting cast includes Jennifer Tilly, Peter Gallagher, and Liam Neeson as Mary's murderous 200-year-old husband. --Bret Fetzer

Daryl Hannah, Peter O'Toole and Steve Guttenberg star in this gleefully ghoulish comedy sparkling with romance and rollicking with supernatural special effects. Written and directed by Neil Jordan (Interview With the Vampire) and co-starring Beverly D'Angelo, Jennifer Tilly, Peter Gallagher and Liam Neeson, High Spirits is the most fun you'll have in this world or the next!Impoverished Peter Plunkett (O'Toole) hatches the perfect plan to save his debt-ridden Irish castle: lure American tourists by advertising the place as haunted. But when Peter and his staff don sheets and chains to go a-haunting, they scare up more than paying guests'they arouse the real ghosts of Castle Plunkett! And when American tourist Jack (Guttenberg) spies a gorgeous ghost named Mary (Hannah), it's love at first sighting. Now all Jack has to worry about is Mary's murderous spook of a husband and their 200-year age difference!

        The Boys From Brazil

The Boys From Brazil by Franklin J. Schaffner from Lions Gate

Gregory Peck hams it up big time in this 1978 thriller based on Ira Levin's bestselling novel. Peck plays an old German Nazi behind a mysterious series of murders, the investigation of which leads to an astonishing plot to create the Fourth Reich. Laurence Olivier is equally outrageous as a Nazi hunter who stumbles onto the scheme. Director Franklin Schaffner (Planet of the Apes) doesn't make any bones about the preposterousness of the story or of his legendary stars' performances, and a viewer is advised not to push too deeply into this tall tale for cautionary meaning. The film is a bit bloody--particularly unnerving in a climactic scene involving some attack dogs under the command of a young but familiar-looking monster. --Tom Keogh

Alive and hiding in South America the fiendish Nazi Dr. Josef Mengele (Geregory Peck) gathers a group of former colleagues for a horrifying project - he wants to clone Hitler. Barry Kohler (Steve Guttenberg) gets wind of the project and informs fames Nazi hunter Ezra Lieberman (Laurence Olivier) but before he can relay the the evidence Kohler is killed. Mengele continues his murderous plot creating 94 young Hitlers and killing their fathers to simulate the madman s own boyhood. As Mengele moves closer to producing global terror Lieberman alone must discover the terrifying extent of his plan and stop it.System Requirements:Starring: Gregory Peck Laurence Olivier James Mason and Lilli Palmer. The Day After

The Day After by Nicholas Meyer from MGM (Video & DVD)

The countdown has begun! Against the real-life backdrop of the US deployment of WMDs in Europe during the escalating cold war this dramatically involving [and] agonizingly graphic film (The Hollywood Reporter) about nuclear holocaust detonated a direct hit into the heartland of America. Starring Jason Robards JoBeth Williams Steven Guttenberg John Cullum and John Lithgow this controversial potent drama (Leonard Maltin) remains one of the most talked-about programs in history (Newsweek)! When cold-war tensions reach the ultimate boiling point the inhabitants of a small town in Kansas learn along with the rest of America that they have less than 30 minutes before 300 Soviet warheads begin to appear overhead! Can anyone survive this ultimate nightmare or the nuclear winter that is sure to follow?System Requirements: Running Time 127 MinFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA Rating: NR UPC: 027616911254 Manufacturer No: 1006987

Few American movies have dealt as graphically with nuclear holocaust as The Day After, which accounted for the controversy that surrounded the telefilm at the time of its initial network broadcast. In previous films, nuclear warfare was a matter for crusading politicians or military might, but here, both are kept in the background (the airman played by William Allen Young is more concerned with returning to his new wife than his duties) and the focus is fixed firmly on middle America--literally so, as the setting is Lawrence, Kansas, the near-center of the country. Audiences are briefly introduced to a representative cross-section of American life, including a doctor (Jason Robards), a young bride-to-be (Lori Lethin), a graduate student (Steve Guttenberg), and an academic (John Lithgow), before the Bomb hits nearby Kansas City. The ensuing destruction is utterly horrific, but a few manage to survive to struggle vainly with rising radiation levels and the slow, inevitable collapse of society. As a protest vehicle, The Day After is a triumph--its scenes of nuclear devastation remain the most powerful statements against nuclear armament ever depicted. It's buoyed by strong direction from Nicholas Meyer, who previously specialized in fantasy (Time After Time), and a capable cast who weather the material with grim determination. Edward Hume's script occasionally stumbles into sudsy territory, but the end result compares with equally moving British efforts like The War Game and Threads. The original network broadcast ran 120 minutes (edited from three hours); this is the 126-minute European theatrical cut. --Paul Gaita

              Tower of Terror

Tower of Terror by D.J. MacHale from Walt Disney Video

Kirsten Dunst stars as plucky teen niece to Steve Guttenberg in this 1997 telefilm that sets out to provide background for one of Disney/MGM Studios' popular thrill-rides, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Guttenberg plays Buzzy, a down-on-his-luck former journalist relegated to concocting stories for a Weekly World News-inspired tabloid. When an elderly woman approaches Buzzy with a compelling ghost story, he's persuaded to investigate. Dunst is Anna, who joins Buzzy in his search to find out the truth about the mysterious 1939 disappearance of five people--including a Shirley Temple-like child star--at the eerily abandoned Hollywood Tower Hotel. There are some scary segments, which may truly frighten sensitive younger viewers. Still, for older kids and adult viewers, Dunst's presence and a fairly fun story makes this an engaging film. (Ages 8 and older) --N.F. Mendoza
