Once Bitten

This is the movie that was supposed to make Jim Carrey a star--in 1985, no less. Perhaps it's no wonder that it took him until the 1990s (and In Living Color): this bloodless vampire comedy almost sank his movie career before it began. Carrey plays an innocent L.A. teen, the unlikely object of the affections of slinky Lauren Hutton, a long-lived vampire who needs the blood of a virgin to stay young. So, she woos the unsuspecting, naive young Valley guy. American Gigolo

Writer-director Paul Schrader viewed this as the second part of a trilogy that began with Taxi Driver and concluded with Light Sleeper--each dealing with a lonely man trying to deal with both his own dizzily spinning moral compass and the hypocrisy of the society that's trying to tell him what to do. Richard Gere plays a high-priced prostitute, an immaculately dressed stud for hire who services the bored women of Beverly Hills without ever allowing himself to be touched emotionally. His affair with a politician's wife (Lauren Hutton) changes that, at a point when he is being framed for a murder he didn't commit. Even as he tries to elude the law, he allows himself to become enmeshed with her in unexpected ways. Too cool and distant for some viewers, the film has a distinctive look and deliberate pacing--and about two endings too many. But it will keep you watching in spite of yourself. --Marshall Fine

Zorro, the Gay Blade

After having a surprise hit playing Dracula in Love at First Bite, George Hamilton seized the moment and spoofed another movie hero: Zorro. In fact, he plays two characters: the heroic Don Diego, who fights Spanish tyranny in Old California in his secret identity as Zorro, and Diego's long-absent brother, Bunny Wigglesworth, a man totally comfortable with his sexual identity and unafraid of accessorizing the Zorro outfit by rendering it in purple. When the swashbuckler is injured, he turns his sword over to the swishbuckler, who is just as good a swordsman, though a few shades less fiery. Some of the gay humor is heavy-handed, but Hamilton easily handles the comedy demands of the dual roles, and has strong support from Ron Leibman as the chief bad guy. --Marshall Fine

A Wedding

After the intensity of 3 Women, Robert Altman joked that he would relieve the pressure by "shooting a wedding." Fittingly, A Wedding, like many of his ensemble efforts, is part serious and part comic--much like the man himself. It begins with the ceremony, where brace-faced Muffin (Amy Stryker) and two-timing Dino (Desi Arnaz Jr.) are joined in holy matrimony by a rickety old bishop (John Cromwell, anticipating Rowan Atkinson's bumbler in Four Weddings and a Funeral). At the rambling reception, other parties come into play, including the parents (Carol Burnett and Paul Dooley vs. Anita Van Pallandt and Vittorio Gassman), the silent sister (Mia Farrow), the stressed-out wedding coordinator (Geraldine Chaplin), and the pesky photographer (Lauren Hutton). Then there's Dino's frail grandmother (Lillian Gish), who'll be lucky to make it through the day alive. As in Gosford Park, Altman spends as much time with the well-heeled guests as the behind-the-scenes staff. If anything can go wrong as these divergent personalities come together, it does. Regarding the 48 cast members, his son Stephen quips in the accompanying featurette, "I think he just wanted to double the 24 actors that were in Nashville." If they don't all register, A Wedding still ranks as one of the more democratic films ever made (the director's three co-writers all have bit parts). The film, which grows darker and more chaotic as it hurtles ahead, may be "minor Altman," but as wedding-related satires go, this widescreen effort stands tall. What he did to the military in M*A*S*H he does to marriage in...Muffin's wedding to Dino Corelli is to be a big affair. Except the ageing priest isn't too sure of the ceremony only the families actually turn up as the Corelli Italian connection is suspect security guards watch the gifts rather over-zealously and Dino's grandma expires in bed just as the reception starts.
