Eddie Murphy makes a graceless debut as a romantic lead in this comedy from Reginald Hudlin. Murphy stars as a ladies man for whom the tables turn when he suddenly finds himself taken for granted by a lover (Robin Givens). Meanwhile, the platonic friend (Halle Berry) whom Murphy regularly visits is obviously--to the viewer, anyway--the woman he's supposed to be with. The absurdly long film is filled out with some fairly crude humor, such as the sight of Geoffrey Holder taking a whiff of Grace Jones's underwear. Yet Hudlin and Murphy also strain for a veneer of elegance and sophistication. Wanting to play it both ways, they end up with nothing. But there are several good sequences where Murphy is quite funny just being Murphy, such as his explanation to Berry of how you can tell which characters in an old episode of Star Trek are destined to die. --Tom Keogh

Roger Moore's last outing as James Bond is evidence enough that it was time to pass the torch to another actor. Beset by crummy action (an out-of-control fire engine?) and featuring a fading Moore still trying to prop up his mannered idea of style, the film is largely interesting for Christopher Walken's quirky performance as a sort-of supervillain who wants to take out California's Silicon Valley. Grace Jones has a spookily interesting presence as a lethal associate of Walken's (and who, in the best Bond tradition, has sex with 007 before trying to kill him later), and Patrick Macnee (Steed!) has a warm if brief bit. Even directed by John Glen, who brought some crackle to the Moore years in the Bond franchise, this is a very slight effort. --Tom Keogh

Conan the Destroyer
by Richard Fleischer
from Universal Studios
The dark, brooding tone of Conan the Barbarian is replaced in this rousing sequel by a lighter, more humorous tone and one of the campiest casts ever assembled. This time, Conan is assigned by a duplicitous queen (Sarah Douglas) to escort a virgin princess (Olivia d'Abo) on a treacherous trek to a crystal palace where they will retrieve a priceless gemstone. Basketball champ and self-described Lothario Wilt Chamberlain plays Bombaata, a warrior sent on a secret mission to kill Conan, and the androgynous Grace Jones plays Zula, a wild woman who becomes Conan's loyal ally. Some consider this sequel a disappointment, but the film makes no apologies for its silliness, and that's the key to its success as gloriously pulpy entertainment. --Jeff Shannon
The fabulous Arnold Schwarzenegger actor author seven times Mr. Olympia and five times Mr. Universe is back for the further adventures of Conan the warrior king. And this time he is joined by a large cast that includes Grace Jones and Wilt Chamberlain. In this second Conan epic he is asked by the evil Queen Taramis to accompany a beautiful young princess to find a magic treasure. If he returns with the treasure and the virgin the Queen promises to bring Conans beloved Valeria back from the dead. But little does he know that she plans to kill them both or that the return of the treasure will mean the extinction of mankind. In the words of People Magazine "...the action is large scale the plot suitably fantastic and the climax a fight to the death between Conan and a god brought back to life (the monster was designed by E.T. creator Carlo Rambaldi) is slam bang."System Requirements:Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger Grace Jones Wilt Chamberlain Tracey Walter Olivia D abo Sarah Douglas Director: Richard Fleischer Copyright: 1984 Universal Produced by Raffaella De Laurentiis; written by Stanley Mann; running time of 101 minutes; Closed Captioned. Colt 38 Special Squad
by Massimo Dallamano
from Noshame
Two of the great all-time European badasses go mano a mano in this brutal crime thriller from Massimo Dallamano (WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOUR DAUGHTERS?). When his wife becomes the latest innocent victim of a merciless Marseilles crime lord (Ivan Rassimov, of YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED DOOR AND ONLY I HAVE THE KEY), police captain Vanni (THE FRENCH CONNECTION's Marcel Bozzuffi) goes beyond the law to form a secret squad of rogue cops, each armed with an unlicensed 38 Colt revolver. As Vanni and his vigilante crew take back the night bullet by bullet, the Marsellais joins the game by instigating a wave of violent crimes that turns the city into a deadly playground.
Released in Italy as Quelli della Calibro 38 ("Those of the 38 Caliber"), COLT 38 SPECIAL SQUAD was the last film directed by Massimo Dallamano and is a no-holds-barred poliziotteschi that's an absolute winner on all fronts: a great cast (Rassimov and Bozzuffi tear up the town in their only screen pairing), high octane action, unflinching violence and a rousing Euro-funk score from maestro Stelvio Cipriani (DEATH WALKS ON HIGH HEELS), plus a surprise guest appearance by Grace Jones!
NoShame Films is proud to present COLT 38 SPECIAL SQUAD for the first time on DVD, uncut and restored to its original aspect ratio. Included in this 2-disc special edition is LA BIDONATA (1978), the long-lost final film by giallo specialist Luciano Ercoli. Shelved after its producer was kidnapped in Italy, the film was never released anywhere in the world and is presented now for the first time by NoShame Films, culled from the original 35 mm negative!
