Pitting Hong Kong legend Jet Li against UK tough guy Jason Statham seems like a surefire way to generate on-screen heat, and action fans will get a good deal of just that from the action-heavy War. Unfortunately, they also have to slog through a clichéd-riddled story about world-weary FBI agent Statham, who's gunning for Li, the master assassin that killed his partner years before, and who's currently neck-deep in a turf war between yakuza and triad gangs. Philip G. Atwell's style-over-substance direction doesn't help matters either, though he does have a way with shootouts and other combative set pieces. As for Li and Statham, their scenes together are surprisingly limited; there's also a twist in the film's final third that begs for serious suspension of disbelief. In short, those that found the duo's last movie team-up (2001's The One) lacking won't find much here to supplant that memory. The DVD includes three commentary tracks: one by Atwell, one by screenwriters Lee Anthony Smith and Gregory J. Bradley (it's the liveliest of the lot) and an audio trivia track that delves deep into the film's production, which is also covered in detail by nine separate featurettes. A gag reel and deleted/extended scenes round out the supplemental features. -- Paul Gaita
Godzilla - Final Wars
from Sony Pictures
Godzilla's 50th Anniversary project and costliest adventure to date out of 28 films. Earth has been relatively peaceful since Godzilla was successfully buried deep in ice beneath the South Pole. Then - sometime a few years hence-several of his old nemeses return to wreak havoc on cities worldwide. A huge spaceship suddenly appears and neutralizes all the monsters in a blink. The visitors are "Xiliens," who take human form and announce they would like to negotiate a peace treaty that would replace the United Nations with a "United Universe". They are indeed too good to be true, however. It doesn't take long before their nefarious real purpose is exposed - conquering Earth. Greatly outmatched, Earth officials decide to de-freeze Godzilla as man's only hope to vanish the invaders, as well as the monsters they control. Only trouble is Godzilla is still mad at man for freezing him in the first place.
D.O.A. - Dead or Alive
by Corey Yuen
from Weinstein Company
Four gorgeous women are invited to a remote island to participate in a fighting tournament.System Requirements:Run Time: 86 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE/MARTIAL ARTS Rating: PG-13 UPC: 796019796941 Manufacturer No: 79694
Based on the popular video-game series, Corey (The Transporter) Yuen's DOA: Dead Or Alive brings together cheesecake titillation and martial-arts action in a lightweight slice of exploitation that's sure to keep its largely young and male audience happy. Jaime Pressly (My Name is Earl) is top-billed as a pro wrestler who joins a no-holds-barred brawling competition on a remote island; once there, she discovers that the tournament's sponsor, Donovan (Eric Roberts at his toothiest and oiliest), has nefarious plans up his sleeve, and the competitors (which include Devon Aoki, Holly Valance, and the always impressive Kane Kosugi) must bond together to fight a common enemy. As with 2007's The Condemned, DOA: Dead Or Alive is the 21st century equivalent of an early '70s drive-in movie: Proudly loud and lunkheaded, its main function is to cram as much fighting and bikini-clad women into its running time as possible, and to that end, it's enormously successful. Director Yuen understands this, and wisely skews the tone towards the broadly (ahem) tongue-in-cheek; Pressly (whose knack for comedy doesn't get as much mileage here) and the rest of her castmates look good and move well, and the fighting, while not on par with Hong Kong or Thai standards, is plentiful and flashy. If you come expecting this and nothing else, you'll have a fine time with DOA: Dead Or Alive. --Paul Gaita

Zero Woman Triple Shot
by Daisuke Gotoh
from Tokyo Shock
Zero Department fights for the fealty of its solitary assassin, Zero Woman, when a fumbling waiter melts her icy heart and tries to rescue the world-weary killer from her soul-crushing life. But is her callous, conniving boss right when he insists "There is no place for you but in the Zero Force"? Mikiyo Ohno milks Zero Woman's solitude for tortured loneliness and turns her violent destiny into something approaching pulp tragedy: "I have yet another memory that can't be erased," she laments after yet another fatal showdown. The high-concept hits (she miraculously pulls a gun from her clinging bathing suit to ace a businessman in a swimming pool) and sexual interludes (the nerdy boyfriend scores big-time booty!) are shuffled through a barrage of flashbacks and a subplot about a scarred masseuse whose secret weapon is poison body oil. Sort of takes the fun out of foreplay, doesn't it? Like most of the films in the series, the shot-on-video production manages to turn a low budget into an austere style, but the busy script often gets in the way of the visceral thrills and bogs the story down in unnecessary detail. She shoots people and she likes to get naked: what's there to explain? --Sean Axmaker
