My Tutor starts with an aerobics class gyrating their hips to the strains of some outdated disco, leading the viewer to believe that it's another trashy sex comedy. But the movie--about Bobby (Matt Lattanzi), a young man whose father hires an attractive French tutor so that he can get into Yale--soon splits in two: part of it follows the comically desperate attempts of the hero's friend (played by the ever-quirky Crispin Glover, from River's Edge and the Back to the Future movies) to get laid; part of it follows the developing relationship of Bobby and Terry (Caren Kaye), the tutor, as they become lovers. The getting-laid story line is goofy and filled with gratuitous breasts, but the story of Bobby and Terry is surprisingly tender and, in its way, realistic. Terry comes across as intelligent and independent, she controls the progress of the relationship, and their sex is more affectionate and comfortable than the dehumanizing 9 1/2 Weeks hijinks one might expect. My Tutor isn't anything profound or even particularly well made, but--unlike most softcore features--it isn't leering or misogynist either. By the end, it's downright sweet and sincere. Sex and Skin from the Double-D Drive-In! Flat broke, Uranus Studios disregards their reputation for producing "artistic films" and, instead, tries to make some fast cash by shooting a "quickie porno." Siphoning off money the government is providing for a film about U.S.-Soviet space flights, the geniuses at Uranus decide to make "a sexaster movie about nympho mermaids and call it Deep Jaws!" With three nubile starlets each thinking she's the lead, and using the same drunken crew to shoot both, the two films quickly blend together in a slapstick orgy of sex-crazed chaos centered around a pool full of... well, horny fishwomen. Glub, glub!
Plus: When a male birth-control pill accidentally sterilizes the male population, the birth rate drops to zero and the President of the U.S. orders the CIA to scour the globe for potent males. Five are found who have yet to take the pill -- a Japanese doper, a Peruvian sheep herder, a Russian prisoner, a 'Frisco drag queen, and an Afro-American anthropology student who's busy boiling fat gals for the local cannibals -- each of whom is code named The Dicktator and promptly ordered to impregnate the horniest of the world's women. Two raunchy sex comedies from producer Manuel S. Conde that could've only been made in the Seventies, featuring a Who's Who of sexploitation starlets including Rene Bond, Uschi Digart, Sandi Carey, Linda York, Cyndee Summers, Kathy Hilton, Roxanne Brewer, and Candy Samples! Yowza!
Night At The Golden Eagle

Over the course of a long night at a decrepit L.A. hotel, a cross-section of equally decrepit people live out their desperate, dead-end lives. This is the jaundiced vision of director Adam Rifkin, best known for the raucously enjoyable Detroit Rock City and the cult curiosity The Dark Backward. He's corralled some good people for this low-budget offering (Natasha Lyonne and Ann Magnuson as hookers, Vinnie Jones as a cruel pimp), but the lion's share of screen time goes to a pair of small-time crooks (Donnie Montemarano and Vinny Argiro) planning to split for Vegas in the morning. It's diverting for a while, but the bleached-sepia look and unrelenting rancidity take their toll, grinding the picture down. Even a soft-shoe shuffle for Fayard Nicholas (of the awesome Nicholas Brothers), a grace note if there ever was one, can't lift the movie out of its determined sense of gloom. --Robert Horton
