Bravery, commitment to friendship, and personal sacrifice empower the weak and give rise to unlikely heroes in the magical world of Fairytopia. Elina (played by Barbie) is a wingless fairy who is mercilessly teased by a trio of spiteful fairies. Luckily for Elina, Dandelion (a fellow fairy) and Bibble (a cute little puffball) are good, supportive friends. When the evil Laverna plots to take over Fairytopia and spreads a potion that causes an epidemic of flying sickness in Fairytopia, Elina is the only fairy not overcome with the illness. It's up to Elina, Bibble, and new friend Hue to find a way to defeat Laverna and save Fairytopia from ruin. While the brightly colored animation of Fairytopia is enticing and the messages of friendship and sacrifice wholesome, the story line and characters are shallow and predictable. Worse yet, the colloquial dialogue and prepubescent attitude of many of the characters is downright annoying. While young Barbie fans will doubtless enjoy Fairytopia, Barbie Princess and the Pauper, Barbie Nutcracker, and Barbie Swan Lake offer richer story lines with better developed and more likeable characters. On a technical note, the DVD played fine on three test DVD players (Sony and Panasonic). (Ages 3 to 9) --Tami Horiuchi

Candy Land - The Great Lollipop Adventure

Responsibility, perseverance, and ingenuity are virtues that serve a young gingerbread boy well along a journey of self-discovery. Based on the Candy Land board game, this 55-minute animated adventure begins with a young gingerbread boy named Jib setting off toward the Candy Castle with an offering of special gingerbread icing to present to the King for the "Sweet Celebration" ceremony. At the Castle, King Kandy appoints his rather irresponsible daughter Princess Lolly to appear at the ceremony, stressing that she must bring her royal scepter to ensure the continued blossoming of everything sweet in Candy Land. Jib hurries along the colorful path to the Kingdom, meeting new friends Mr. Mint and Jolly along the way, while the sneaky Licorice Bites steal Princess Lolly's scepter to further Lord Licorice's evil plan to turn Candy Land into Licorice Land. A chance meeting between Jib and Princess Lolly leads the two to join forces against Lord Licorice, but can they possibly recover the scepter and make it to the Candy Castle in time for the celebration? Merlin's Apprentice

A fanciful sequel to the successful 1998 miniseries Merlin, this 2005 multi-part series benefits greatly from Sam Neill's return performance as the legendary wizard. Taking place some 50 years after the first film, Merlin's Apprentice partners the magician with a young thief with untapped magic powers of his own (engaging Canadian actor John Reardon) in a quest to recover the lost Holy Grail, which holds the key to Camelot's protection and survival. Miranda Richardson, who enlivened the '98 production as the ferocious Queen Mab, also returns to provide some necessary drama as the Lady in the Lake. Solid production values (bolstered by the lovely Vancouver locations), confident direction by Hong Kong veteran David Wu (Bride with White Hair 2), and an abundance of fantasy-action make this a worthwhile adventure for fans of the first miniseries and sword-and-sorcery features in general. --Paul Gaita

The canine member of the Superman family got his own Cartoon Network series in 2005, and the first volume, Cosmic Canine, is a random collection of five 12-minute episodes (including the two-part opener). We meet Krypto, the pet of Kal-El who was also sent to Earth before Krypton exploded and who discovers the Earth's yellow sun gives him amazing powers such as flight, strength, and heat vision. The opener features a cameo by Superman, long enough to agree to Krypto's staying with an Earth boy named Kevin. Krypto's challenges include saving a ship full of zoo animals, battling a Kryptonian superflea, dealing with a giant caterpillar, and saving a helpless (or so he thinks) kitten from a pack of super-powered dogs called the Dog Stars. Krypto's contributing talent includes Alan Burnett and Paul Dini of the well-regarded Superman and Batman animated series, but it's aimed at a much younger crowd. Hot Wheels Acceleracers 2: The Speed of Silence is the follow-up to Hot Wheels Acceleracers: Ignition, in which Dr. Peter Tezla discovered technology that allows super-fast cars to enter "racing realms," i.e., other-dimensional environments where racers can drive along tracks found underwater, in a strange city, and elsewhere. Once again, two teams of human racers, the Teku and Metal Maniacs, launch into these realms, this time competing against one another to see who first reaches the Accele-Charger, which provides unique powers to vehicles. Dr. Tezla wants to unlock the secret of the Accele-Charger's power, in order to stave off the wicked Gelorum and her scary-looking Racing Drones in their quest to rule the world. It helps to know something about the Acceleracers saga before diving into Speed of Silence. But even without a thorough background, it's easy to enjoy the intertwining personal dramas among the Teku and Metal Maniacs, all set against the exotica and suspense of the Racing Realms, where even the bravest of the brave face death-defying race courses, car-eating sharks, and Gelorum's terrifying Drone Sweeper. The animation in Speed of Silence is impressively imaginative yet very precise about the details of Tezla's work, perceptions of the racing realms as seen from multiple angles, and myriad emotions captured on the characters' faces. The cars look great without over-hyping product tie-ins to Hot Wheels toys, and the soundtrack is surprisingly good. --Tom Keogh
