The jokes may be corny and the content squeaky clean, but it's hard to resist the toothy charms of Donnie & Marie. (When Donnie gets a call on his loafer phone, Marie quips, "That's shoe business!") No matter how crazy the characters (Captain Purple and Wonderful Woman), tacky the outfits (heavy on the rhinestones, feathers, and gold lamé), or incredible the situations (Donnie on stilts), the brother-sister duo always look like they wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Though this collection focuses on only four episodes, it does cover every year of the popular Sid and Marty Krofft-produced variety series (1976-1979). Since Marie was "a little bit country" and Donnie "a little bit rock and roll," each installment features selections from both genres--although "rock and roll" usually means R&B and disco--along with giggly sketches and skating from the Vegas-style Ice Vanities. Musical selections include "Jive Talkin'," "Yakety Yak," "I'm Your Puppet," "Dance to the Music," and "Good Day Sunshine." Guests include Charo, Paul Lynde, Ruth Buzzi, Bob Hope, Cheryl Ladd, Carl Reiner (as Carmen Miranda), and Minnie Pearl (as Shirley Temple). While the cavity-prone should steer clear of this sugary flashback, for the rest of the viewing audience, Donnie & Marie offers boundless enthusiasm, supreme silliness, and the widest smiles of the 1970s (next to Jimmy Carter). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The Gift of Love
by Don Chaffey
from Monterey Video
Inspired by O. Henry's short story about a young bride and groom, each of whom foolishly--but quite lovingly--sacrifices a treasured possession to buy the perfect Christmas gift for their mate. Amid a flurry of bustling New Yorkers clad in early-20th-century garb, O. Henry himself (David Wayne) sets the scene: Beth, a teenage orphan (Marie Osmond), comes to live with her wealthy aunt and uncle (the latter played by Donald Moffat). Her friendship with a cheerful kitchen maid soon leads to a stormy encounter with a handsome Swiss immigrant, Rudy (Timothy Bottoms). Despite Beth and Rudy's conflicting social statuses, and Beth's arranged engagement to a sickly bird watcher (a young James Woods, who truly fits the bill), the two fall in love and miraculously overcome these obstacles--all in about 95 minutes. Old-fashioned romance, elegant costumes, and a happy ending make this predictable story completely irresistible to those who love a good fairy tale--or to Osmond fans who fondly remember watching the movie on TV in 1978. Produced by the Osmond Brothers for PBS's American Short Story series. --Liane Thomas
Buster & Chauncey's Silent Night
by Buzz Potamkin
from Sony Pictures
Buster and Chauncey the world's greatest Mouse-icians have arrived in Oberndorf for their shot at the big time: performing for the Queen at the annual Christmas pageant! But on Christmas Eve Burghermeister Huffenmeir finds all the preparations for the festivities destroyed and the treasure of Oberndorf missing. When he accuses Buster and Chauncey's friend Christina an orphan in search of her long lost family it seems certain that Christmas will be ruined. Now it's up to the Mice-traeos of Mistletoe to help Christina reveal the real culprits return the treasure and show the town of Oberndorf the true meaning of Christmas not with a big pageant but with a little song and a lot of love!Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: CHILDREN/FAMILY Rating: G UPC: 043396052697 Manufacturer No: 05269
This is a nicely animated musical that's loosely based on the true story of the composition of "Silent Night" in 1818 by Father Joseph Mohr and Choirmaster Franz Gruber. It's Christmas Eve and mouse-icians Buster and Chauncey are on their way to the town of Oberndorf to sing for the Queen. The whole town is a flutter with preparations, so imagine Burghermeister Huffenmeir's distress when the Duke of Raoche and his niece Lady Gretchen arrive a day early. Also newly arrived is Christina, an orphan girl on her way to Vienna in hopes of finding her aunt and uncle. When the Oberndorf treasure is found missing, all clues point to Christina, who steadfastly denies the charge. Father Joseph believes the girl, but it's up to Chauncey and Buster to prove her innocence and apprehend the real thieves. In the end, the Christmas celebration with the Queen is not as lavish as originally planned but proves much more meaningful. The town discovers that the true meaning of Christmas is not fame or fortune but friendship, sharing, and giving, and they celebrate their new wisdom by singing "Silent Night," a Christmas song composed by Father Joseph and Franz on that tumultuous Christmas Eve. This musical is full of compelling songs written by such great musical composers as Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens, Barry Harman, and Keith Herrmann. Voice talents Phil Hartman, Marie Osmond, and Tom Arnold add much to an already great production. What a wonderful way to communicate the meaning of Christmas. (Ages 3-12) --Tami Horiuchi
