Mannequin is notionally a romantic comedy in which Andrew McCarthy plays a luckless department-store employee and Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City) is an Egyptian princess reincarnated as a shop-window dummy, who comes to life when she encounters McCarthy, only to revert to mannequin status when anyone else is watching her. With her encouragement, he becomes emboldened in his career as a window decorator as well as falling in love with the princess. James Spader's oily, stammering executive is just one of the many examples of a film that tries way too hard to be funny, the sort of characterization that would be barely adequate for a TV commercial, let alone a 90-minute movie. Still, for fans of Sex and the City who might want to feast upon the spectacle of a younger Kim Cattrall, Mannequin might offer a measure of relief. --David Stubbs

Fifteen-year-old Connie Wyatt (Laura Dern) may be too young to drive, but she's already driving the boys crazy. Her suspicious mother (Mary Kay Place) wants to keep her safely at home, but free-spirited Connie would rather while away the languid summer days hanging out with her friends and flirting with boys at the local burger stand. But when she flirts with an older, handsome and predatory stranger (Treat Williams), she isn't prepared for the frightening and traumatic consequences.

Road House 2

This unexpected sequel to the camp-cult favorite Road House delivers much of the same fast-n-furious action as its predecessor, though die-hard fans (and they're out there) might miss the over-the-top dialogue and plot devices that earned the original its reputation. Patrick Swayze, who starred in the first Road House picture, is nowhere to be found in the sequel--instead, it's Jonathan Schaech as a DEA agent with a connection to Swayze's character who comes to the aid of his uncle (Will Patton in a rare non-villainous role), the owner of a Louisiana bar that's come under siege by a local drug dealer (Jake Busey, who chews scenery with vigor). What follows is a barrage of bar brawls and room-wrecking stunts as Schaech takes his rightful place as the world's toughest bouncer. Suffice it to say that if you own the first Road House movie (or at least watched it more than once), you'll find the sequel a worthwhile follow-up. --Paul Gaita

Just a Little Harmless Sex

A strictly monogamous man (Robert Mailhouse) stops to help a stranded female with a broken down car. In gratitude she offers oral sex, when he reluctantly accepts. However, just as they get involved, the cops arrive and it turns out that the woman is a known prostitute. The man is arrested and is forced to call his wife (Alison Eastwood) at 3 AM to bail him out. A few days later he is evicted from his home by his wife. His best friends (Jonathan Silverman, William Ragsdale) question how he could have been so naive. Meanwhile his wife and her friends (Kimberly Williams, Jessica Lundy) plan their own night out with full sexual plans. Meanwhile the men decide that an apology is at hand. Arriving home, instead of his wife, he finds his mother-in-law (Lauren Hutton). Eventually the guys, girls, and mom all end up together in a night club that brings all the events to a head.
