Alive
by Frank Marshall
from Buena Vista Home Entertainment
In 1972 a chartered plane carrying a Uruguayan rugby squad and various family members crashed in the Andes. If that sounds dry and matter-of-fact, you haven't seen director Frank Marshall's harrowing re-creation Alive, an adrenaline-pounding, heart-in-your-mouth spectacle that kicks off this famous story of survival. The real-life against-all-odds odyssey made worldwide headlines when it became known that the survivors ate their own dead to survive. What could have easily become sensationalistic exploitation is treated with compassion and dignity by Marshall as he explores their moral and spiritual struggles as well as their physical ordeal. As team captain and base-camp cheerleader Vincent Spano slowly collapses under the stress and Ethan Hawke rouses from mourning his dead family to taking charge of saving himself, it also becomes a portrait in leadership, hope, and emotional courage. --Sean Axmaker

Based on the off-Broadway play Strange Snow, this chamber drama is essentially a three-hander between Robert De Niro, Kathy Baker, and Ed Harris. Harris is a Vietnam vet suffering the recurring effects of posttraumatic stress disorder. De Niro is an old army buddy who looks him up and helps him come to terms with the ugly memories he has of their days together in Vietnam and of a pal who didn't make it out alive. Baker plays Harris's sister, a schoolteacher and wallflower who blossoms under the attention of the rough-hewn De Niro. Harris and De Niro clash in a cathartic confrontation, but not before De Niro and Baker play an incredibly erotic and understated love scene that serves as the film's emotional core. --Marshall Fine
Killing Zoe
by Roger Avary
from Lions Gate
From the Creators of RESERVOIR DOGS and PULP FICTION. An American safecracker named Zed (Eric Stoltz) is summoned to Paris by his childhood buddy, Eric (Jean-Hugues Anglade), to help pull a Bastille Day bank heist. Dreams of easy money quickly evaporate when the heist goes sour and Eric transforms into a psychotic, drug-crazed sociopath. This highly controversial first film by Academy Award(r) -winning filmmaker Roger Avary* was an instant cult classic and fast became the barometer by which Generation X gauged its own nihilism. Killing Zoe is a "must own" dark vision that drags exploitation, kicking and screaming, into the realm of art house cinema - neither will ever be the same. *1995, Best Original Screenplay, PULP FICTION

Curdled
by Reb Braddock
from Miramax
Definitely not for everyone, this film by Reb Braddock (executive produced by Quentin Tarantino) has become a cult favorite--but only for the cult that enjoys its humor dark, twisted, and deeply bloodstained. Angela Jones is a young woman in Miami who is so obsessed with the crimes of a local serial killer (William Baldwin) that she takes a job working for a company that cleans up murder scenes, just to get closer to him. She digs the work, learning the tricks of a trade that is focused on removing unsightly bloodstains that come in multi-pint-size pools. Braddock and cowriter John Maass craft a nerve-racking finale in which the killer romances the cleaner, with surprising results. Not for the squeamish. --Marshall Fine
This cutting-edge thriller stars William Baldwin (FAIR GAME, SLIVER) as a seductive mass murderer who meets his match when he encounters a sexy young woman named Gabriela (Angela Jones -- PULP FICTION, MAN ON THE MOON), assigned to clean up one of his crime scenes. But when she literally uncovers crucial evidence linking him to the crime, the killer pursues Gabriela only to discover that she shares his disturbing fascination with murder! Uniquely original, CURDLED is a hot-blooded thriller with unpredictable twists and a shockingly memorable climax!
