    Poltergeist (25th Anniversary Edition)

Poltergeist (25th Anniversary Edition) by Tobe Hooper from Warner Home Video

What a combo! Tobe Hooper, the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, teamed up with family-oriented producer Steven Spielberg to make Poltergeist. The film is about a haunted suburban tract home in a development very much like the Arizona one in which Spielberg was raised. (Because it came out the same summer as Spielberg's E.T., it was tempting to see both movies as representing Spielberg's ambivalent feelings about childhood in suburbia. One was a fantasy, the other a nightmare.) Spielberg also cowrote the screenplay, which taps into primal, childlike fears of monsters under the bed, monsters in the closet, sinister clown faces, and all manner of things that go bump in the night. At first, some of the odd happenings in the house are kind of funny and amusing, but they grow gradually creepier until the film climaxes in a terrifying special-effects extravaganza when 5-year-old Carole Anne (Heather O'Rourke) is kidnapped by the spooks and held hostage in another dimension. Though not nearly as frightening as Hooper's magnum opus, or the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, which came along two years later, Poltergeist is one of the smartest and most entertaining horror pictures of its time. --Jim Emerson

      Poltergeist II/Poltergeist III

Poltergeist II/Poltergeist III by Gary Sherman from MGM (Video & DVD)

As sequels go, Poltergeist II has the advantage of retaining most of the original film's cast (although the absence of the actress Dominique Dunne, a murder victim, is not explained). It's still not enough to turn this dreary outing into a passable horror movie. The terrorized Freeling family has moved from their haunted house, but the bothersome ghosties are not finished with them yet. The lame scares include a sequence built around Craig T. Nelson swallowing a demon worm from a tequila bottle and then regurgitating it. Far more frightening is the wizened face of theater legend Julian Beck, who appears as a foreboding old guy with bad news for the Freelings: "Yer all gonna die!"

Poltergeist III recruits only blond cherub Heather O'Rourke (who died before the film's release) and dwarf psychic Zelda Rubinstein from the first movies. The action has shifted to a Chicago high-rise, where little Carol Anne's otherworldly gift is being studied (Tom Skerritt and Nancy Allen play the uncle and aunt she boards with). Director Gary Sherman tries to get some ideas going with mirror images, but the bargain-basement atmosphere and the limited special effects undercut the movie at every turn. --Robert Horton

        Sixteen Candles

Sixteen Candles by John Hughes from Universal Pictures

Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for The Breakfast Club, another key teen picture of the decade. --Robert Horton

One of the most iconic teen comedies of the 1980s, Sixteen Candles, returns in an all-new Flashback Edition with never-before-seen bonus features! Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) is ready to make the most of her sweet sixteenth birthday … if only someone in her family would remember it. She's your average teen, enduring creepy freshmen, spoiled siblings, confused parents and the “Big Blonde on Campus” who stands between her and the boy of her dreams. From writer/director John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Weird Science), Sixteen Candles is a warm-hearted coming-of-age comedy that helped define a generation!

                  Wishcraft

Wishcraft by Richard Wenk from Hbo Home Video

A teen horror flick that's a step above its peers, Wishcraft fuses a slasher movie with a "be careful what you wish for" story line. Bret (Michael Weston), a smart but unsociable high school kid, receives a strange box in the mail. A note tells him the contents will give him three wishes; naturally, he wishes for a date with a cheerleader (Alexandra Holden) he has a crush on. His wish comes true--but just as his new life is beginning, someone is murdering the popular kids in strange, inventive ways. Wishcraft isn't novel or surprising, but what's unusual is how well written, smartly directed, and solidly acted the movie is. The dialogue sounds genuine; the characters have more than one dimension; clichés are kept to a minimum. It won't win any awards, but if all B movies were this good, we'd be living in a much more entertaining world. --Bret Fetzer

Brett is one of the outsiders at his school. A little too bright to be popular, that doesn't stop him from having the biggest crush on the cheerleading Samantha, who's a little too popular to take him seriously. When Brett receives a mysterious package that contains a totem with the ability to grant its owner three wishes, he discovers that dreams can come true - with a vengeance. Suddenly Samantha is holding him so tight its cutting off his circulation, and her non-stop adoration is not his only problem. Someone is systematically slaughtering the rebels and the jocks - and the cheerleaders. Misbehave? Hit the grave. Now Samantha is primed to be the killer's next target. A perfect victim for a killer in search of perfection - and the only thing that might save her is WISHCRAFT.
