Secretary

Secretary from Lionsgate

This kinky love story features a standout performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal, an offbeat young actress in her first starring role. Gyllenhaal plays Lee, a nervous girl who compulsively cuts herself, who gets a job as a secretary for Edward, an imperious lawyer (James Spader, an old hand at tales of perverse affection). Edward's reprimands for typos and spelling errors begin with mild humiliation, but as Lee responds to his orders--which are driven as much by his own anxieties and fears as any sense of order--the punishments escalate to spankings, shackles, and more. Secretary walks a fine line. It finds sly humor in these sadomasochistic doings without turning them into a gag, and it takes Lee and Edward's mutual desires seriously without getting self-righteous or pompous. Certainly not a movie for everyone, but some people may be unexpectedly stirred up by this smart and steamy tale of repressed passion. --Bret Fetzer

Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) has a few strikes against her when she applies for a secretarial position at the law office of E. Edward Grey (James Spader). Although she's never had a job in her life Lee is hired by the mysterious lawyer Mr. Grey. At first the work seems quite normal but soon in between typing filing and making coffee Lee and Mr. Grey embark on a more personal relationship crossing lines of conduct that would give any human resource director the vapors!System Requirements:Starring: James Spader Maggie Gyllenhaal Jeremy Davies and Leslie Ann Warren. Batman Forever

Batman Forever by Joel Schumacher from Warner Home Video

When Tim Burton and Michael Keaton announced that they'd had enough of the Batman franchise, director Joel Schumacher stepped in (with Burton as coproducer) to make this action-packed extravaganza starring Val Kilmer as the caped crusader. Batman is up against two of Gotham City's most colorful criminals, the Riddler (a role tailor-made for funnyman Jim Carrey) and the diabolical Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones), who join forces to conquer Gotham's population with a brain-draining device. Nicole Kidman plays the seductive psychologist who wants to know what makes Batman tick. Boasting a redesigned Batmobile and plenty of new Bat hardware, Batman Forever also introduces Robin the Boy Wonder (Chris O'Donnell) whose close alliance with Batman led more than a few critics to ponder the series' homoerotic subtext. No matter how you interpret it, Schumacher's take on the Batman legacy is simultaneously amusing, lavishly epic, and prone to chronic sensory overload. --Jeff Shannon

The Caped Crusader returns to do battle with Two-Face and the Riddler. Also introduces Robin who becomes his partner, while Kidman is Batman/Bruce Wayne's love interest.

Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997 (Batman / Batman Returns / Batman Forever / Batman & Robin) (Two-Disc Special Editions)

Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997 (Batman / Batman Returns / Batman Forever / Batman & Robin) (Two-Disc Special Editions) by Joel Schumacher from Warner Home Video

For fans and newcomers, this boxed set holds a great collection, including all four great movies. The first in the series, Batman (1989), and arguably the best of the four movies, exudes the moodiness of the Dark Knight's character. Tim Burton's direction and Michael Keaton's rendition of Batman are an electrifying combo. Together they capture the sinister atmosphere of Gotham City and Batman's darkness. Jack Nicholson as the fiendish Joker and Kim Basinger as the resourceful and gorgeous Vicki Vale lend their charm. Three years later, in 1992, Burton and Keaton reunited for Batman Returns. This time our pointy-eared hero has to combat two villains: Danny DeVito as the disturbed and freaky Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. In Batman Forever (1995), Joel Schumacher gave his direction to the story with Val Kilmer under the cape. Kilmer keeps the moodiness but adds a little panache to his rendition. His archenemies this time are the Riddler (Jim Carrey) and Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones). Luckily, he enlists the help of the Boy Wonder, Robin (Chris O'Donnell). The final movie in the series, Batman & Robin, is great eye candy, and this time Schumacher returns with George Clooney as the leading man and Chris O'Donnell again as Robin. Together Batman and Robin battle the icy Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), with a little help from Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone). Delve into the Gotham City world with the Dark Knight to protect you, and don't forget to make lots of popcorn for this Batman marathon. --Samantha Allen Storey

                  Billboard Dad

Billboard Dad by Alan Metter from Warner Home Video

It's the Olsen twins to the rescue once again in their straight-to-video release, Billboard Dad. With Venice, California, serving as a Bohemian backdrop, the preteen queens of the dead-mom genre scheme to find their widowed father a girlfriend by turning a Hollywood billboard into a personal ad. Breezy predictability ensues: Dad gets thousands of letters and dates a series of progressively weirder women before bumping into Ms. Right. Since Dad's a successful sculptor, true love destroys the angst behind his profitable art. As his agent tries to drive a wedge between the lovebirds, the twins become unwitting accomplices. All of this just sets the stage, really, for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to do their thing--they are way cool, fashionable, and mature beyond their preteen years--with their equally hip friends, who have a drama of their own unfolding on the diving team. Nothing truly unexpected happens, but it doesn't matter. In other words, parents, don't watch this alone. --Valerie J. Nelson

One's a surfer. The other's a high diver. When these two sisters team up to find a new love for their newly single Dad it's a fun-loving eye-catching California adventure gone wild. Mary-Kate and Ashley star in this fabulously funny love-struck comedy filled with crazy schemes and cool surprises. Determined to find their Dad Max a new love the girls paint a personals ad on a giant billboard in the heart of Hollywood. After a few disastrous dates Max finally meets Brooke and it's love at first sight. There's just one hitch: her unruly skateboarding son is the girls' arch rival. Now with the girls plotting every action-packed step of the way they've got to find out if love really does conquer all. Full of outrageous events mixed-up matches and lots of laughs "Billboard Dad" tops the charts as Mary-Kate and Ashley's coolest mischieve-making adventure ever.Running Time: 90 min.System Requirements: Running Time 89 MinFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: NR UPC: 085393651923

                    The Last Day of Summer

The Last Day of Summer by Blair Treu from Sony Pictures

What if it were possible to re-live one particular day over and over again with the potential of changing one's actions and altering the future? Eleven-year-old Luke Malloy (played by Hayden Panettiere's younger brother Jansen Panettiere) is granted to the ultimate "do-over" when his wish that somehow it could stay today forever comes true and he begins endlessly reliving the last day of summer. Fearful about entering middle school where recess is a thing of the past, they'll be split up from their friends, and a scary punk called Meat (Daniel Samonas) rules the hallways, Luke and his friends A.J. (Jon Kent Ethridge) and Riley (Eli Vargas) are determined to have one last day of fun at the local Labor Day carnival. Things don't go quite as planned and the trio has a frightening encounter with Meat, then Luke's nerves get the better of him at the local skateboard bowl and before his band's performance at the talent show. When Luke is inadvertently hit on the head, he wakes up and it's the last day of summer all over again--and again, and again. As he repeatedly relives the day, Luke learns a lot about himself and the motivations of others and begins to alter his actions in ways that may potentially change his future. A Groundhog Day (B00005U8EM) for the tween set, The Last Day of Summer is an entertaining movie for ages 7 and older that does a nice job of exploring middle school angst and encouraging self-confidence. --Tami Horiuchi
