End of the Century - The Story of the Ramones
by Michael Gramaglia
from Rhino / Wea
In 1974 the New York City music scene was shocked into consiousness by a band of misfits from Queens called the Ramones. Playing in seedy Bowery bar to a small group of fellow struggling musicians the band struck a chord of disharmony that rocked the foundation of the '70s music scene. Tracing the history of the band from its unlikely origins through its star-crossed career bitter demise and the sad fates of Joey and Dee Dee End of the Century is a vibrant candid document of one of the most influential groups in the history of rock.Format: DVD VIDEO Genre: DOCUMENTARIES/MISC. Pearl Jam - Touring Band 2000
from Sony
Imagine you've been given a carte blanche pass to follow Pearl Jam on their 2000 North American tour. Now take 28 songs performed in 19 different cities (with the band's hometown, Seattle, getting the lion's share of five songs), and capture them for posterity, courtesy of three PJ crewmembers, who formed a kamikaze documentary unit with handheld video cameras. In the words of frontman Eddie Vedder (whose liner notes are dated February 14, 2001), this three-hour DVD is "in some ways the visual equivalent of the bootlegs that have been released in the past year... a basic document of what may occur at any given Pearl Jam concert." Well, it's all that and more. The gritty, homespun approach is totally appropriate for the band's no-frills performance of straightforward, superlative rock & roll, and the sound recording is nothing less than spectacular, especially if you honor Vedder's request to "PLEASE PLAY THIS MOVIE LOUD."
Singling out highlights is like trying to pick a favorite child; every viewer will have favorites, and every choice is justified. The death of grunge is Pearl Jam's blessing. Having proven its endurance, the band flourishes in the absence of overexposure. Everyone's in peak form (we like the beard, Eddie), and the DVD's bonus features are both fun and substantial, including city, band, and fan montages from PJ's earlier European tour, Todd McFarlane's outstanding animated "Do the Evolution" video, and three songs featuring "Matt Cam," fixed on drummer Matt Cameron, with percussion mixed louder on the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. The only possible complaint is the absence of interviews or backstage footage, but that's a trivial quibble. It's the music that matters, and as an audiovisual record of PJ's 2000 tour, this DVD was created with all the right priorities. --Jeff Shannon
The first Pearl Jam full-length DVD features three hours of live and montage footage from the band's 2000 U.S. and European tours. The main body of the DVD program is comprised of 28 full song performances filmed in various cities on the band's 2000 48-city U.S. tour, reflecting the time and composition of an actual concert set list. The DVD was filmed by Pearl Jam crew members Liz Burns, Steve Gordon, and Kevin Shuss without directors or producers. An additional 50 minutes of special bonus features includes footage from the band's 2000 European tour, backstage footage, previously unreleased music, special consumer-chosen camera angles, the previously unreleased video for "Oceans," and more. Edited by Steve Gordon. Recorded and mixed by Brett Eliason and engineered by John Burton.
Track list: Long Road, Corduroy, Grievance, Animal, Gods' Dice, Evacuation, Given to Fly, Dissident, Nothing as It Seems, Evenflow, Lukin, Not for You, Daughter (into "It's OK" by Dead Moon), Untitled, MFC, Thin Air, Leatherman, Betterman, Nothingman, Insignificance, I Got Shit, RVM, Wishlist, Jeremy, Evolution, Don't Go, Parting Ways, Rocking in the Free World
Special bonus features:

(The "Matt-cam" is a special camera positioned behind drummer Matt Cameron that the consumer can switch to while viewing the DVD.)
European montages: City, band, and fan montages from the European tour with "Yellow Ledbetter" live and previously unreleased instrumentals recorded by Pearl Jam during early Binaural sessions. Instrumentals titled: "Thunderclap," "Foldback," and "Harmony."

America - A Tribute to Heroes (Telethon Broadcast)
by Joel Gallen
from Warner Bros / Wea
Tribute albums and concerts come and go, but America: A Tribute to Heroes may well stand the test of time. Recorded just 10 days after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the two-hour telethon has an appropriately somber tone; it's also refreshingly unpretentious and ego-free, with no audience and no onscreen identification of the musical artists or the actors and others who speak between songs. There are some passionate and moving performances by Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Limp Bizkit and friends, Neil Young (the much-praised "Imagine"), and several more, easily eclipsing the couple of outright turkeys (the overwrought theatrics of Enrique Iglesias and Mariah Carey). To watch the program now, as the horror may have started to fade, is to be reminded of the extraordinary emotions the tragic events of 9/11 aroused; and while pop music may be superfluous in the big picture, its power to inspire and perhaps even heal is something to behold. --Sam Graham
The unprecedented broadcast of the live, star-studded, two-hour entertainment spectacular America: A Tribute to Heroes on Friday, September 21, 2001, served to both raise money for the victims of the September 11 tragedy and to bring our nation together to salute the American spirit. All net proceeds of this DVD will be donated to the United Way's September 11th Fund. Songs: My City of Ruin (Bruce Springsteen), Love's in Need of Love Today (Stevie Wonder featuring Take 6), Walk On (U2), There Will Come a Day (Faith Hill), I Won't Back Down (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), Hero (Enrique Iglesias), Imagine (Neil Young), Someday We'll All Be Free (Alicia Keys), Wish You Were Here (Limp Bizkit with John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls), New York State of Mind (Billy Joel), I Believe in Love (Dixie Chicks), Everyday (Dave Matthews), Redemption Song (Wyclef Jean), Hero (Mariah Carey), Livin' on a Prayer (Bon Jovi), Safe and Sound (Sheryl Crow), Fragile (Sting), The Long Road (Eddie Vedder), Bridge Over Troubled Water (Paul Simon), God Bless America (Celine Dion), America the Beautiful (Willie Nelson). 120 minutes.

The Who - Live at the Royal Albert Hall
by Dick Carruthers
from Image Entertainment
For a band that held its farewell tour in 1982, the Who sound far from finished when it comes to exploring the greater passions and sonic possibilities of its old material. Never has that been more evident than in The Who: Live at the Royal Albert Hall, a record of the group's remarkable stand at a charity gig in London late in 2000. Perennial patrons of adolescents, the Who is clearly energized by an emotional attachment to Britain's Teenage Cancer Trust (beneficiary of the fundraiser), a feeling that also sweeps through several well-chosen guests who happen to be spiritual descendants of the band. After a long opening set that includes a scorching "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere," a gorgeous update of "The Kids Are Alright," and a soulful "Bargain," the Who usher in punk violinist Nigel Kennedy to help electrify "Baba O'Riley," the Jam's founder Paul Weller for a lovely, acoustic rendition of "So Sad About Us," and Stereophonics guitarist-vocalist Kelly Jones for a nearly epiphanous "Substitute."
More than just a parade of celebrities paying homage to Townshend and fellow Olympians Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, the select visitors here challenge the Who to add new colors to old warhorses (Noel Gallagher's psychedelic tinge on "Won't Get Fooled Again") and delicate semiclassics (Eddie Vedder's sympathetic duet with Townshend on "I'm One"). By the end of a robust evening, Daltrey's voice is shot and Townshend looks ready for a shot of vitamins, but anyone who would declare the Who a bunch of worn-out grandpas is spoiling for a Mod-era stomping. This is an essential set for Who loyalists and a wonderful show for everyone else. --Tom Keogh
For millions of fans around the world, The Who has defined the quintessential rock band for nearly four decades. The band's extraordinary music and lyrics have left and indelible imprint on music history, and their live performances are legendary.

Ramones - Raw
by John Cafiero
from Image Entertainment
An appropriately rough-and-tumble visual scrapbook of the Ramones' 20-year run, Ramones: Raw is sure to please fans of the legendary punk band with over five hours of live performances and rare behind-the-scenes footage. The core of the disc is a rock & roll Frankenstein of ferocious live performances of their most well-loved numbers, including "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Rockaway Beach," and many others, interspersed with footage of the band on television and at venues around the world. But for veteran Ramones followers, the disc's real value comes in the supplemental features, which are crowned by an hourlong, never-before-seen performance filmed for Italian television. The extras also include rowdy appearances on everything from Howard Stern's early '90s TV series to the NYC cable access program Uncle Floyd; clips from drummer Marky Ramone's extensive Super-8 footage of the band offer an off-stage glimpse at the group's humor, especially in the face of frantic international audiences. All this, capped by wry commentary by Marky and Johnny, means that if you've flown the Gabba-Gabba-Hey flag at any point in your life, you'll want Ramones: Raw. --Paul Gaita

Brian Wilson on Tour
by John Anderson (XXXII)
from Sanctuary Records
The Mozart of pop? A one-man Lennon and McCartney? The comparisons aren't extravagant when you're talking about Brian Wilson, subject of this captivating 77-minute documentary (with interviews, live performances, behind-the-scenes footage, etc.). The fact that the wunderkind architect of so many Beach Boys classics is still around at all in 2003, let alone largely recovered from his well-chronicled emotional and physical problems, borders on the miraculous. The DVD is a celebration of Wilson's life and work--not simply by the likes of Paul McCartney, Neil Young, and Pete Townshend but by Brian himself, who with each performance becomes stronger and more at ease on stage. And it's great to hear his songs, including both the obvious ("Good Vibrations," "Fun Fun Fun") and the unexpected ("Lay Down Burden," Brian's tender tribute to his late brother Carl), performed with such joy by Wilson's brilliant band. More than a comeback, this is an ongoing, encouraging success story. --Sam Graham
