Pearl Jam - Touring Band 2000

Imagine you've been given a carte blanche pass to follow Pearl Jam on their 2000 North American tour. Now take 28 songs performed in 19 different cities (with the band's hometown, Seattle, getting the lion's share of five songs), and capture them for posterity, courtesy of three PJ crewmembers, who formed a kamikaze documentary unit with handheld video cameras. In the words of frontman Eddie Vedder (whose liner notes are dated February 14, 2001), this three-hour DVD is "in some ways the visual equivalent of the bootlegs that have been released in the past year... a basic document of what may occur at any given Pearl Jam concert." Well, it's all that and more. The gritty, homespun approach is totally appropriate for the band's no-frills performance of straightforward, superlative rock & roll, and the sound recording is nothing less than spectacular, especially if you honor Vedder's request to "PLEASE PLAY THIS MOVIE LOUD."

Singling out highlights is like trying to pick a favorite child; every viewer will have favorites, and every choice is justified. The death of grunge is Pearl Jam's blessing. Having proven its endurance, the band flourishes in the absence of overexposure. Everyone's in peak form (we like the beard, Eddie), and the DVD's bonus features are both fun and substantial, including city, band, and fan montages from PJ's earlier European tour, Todd McFarlane's outstanding animated "Do the Evolution" video, and three songs featuring "Matt Cam," fixed on drummer Matt Cameron, with percussion mixed louder on the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. The only possible complaint is the absence of interviews or backstage footage, but that's a trivial quibble. It's the music that matters, and as an audiovisual record of PJ's 2000 tour, this DVD was created with all the right priorities. --Jeff Shannon

The first Pearl Jam full-length DVD features three hours of live and montage footage from the band's 2000 U.S. and European tours. The main body of the DVD program is comprised of 28 full song performances filmed in various cities on the band's 2000 48-city U.S. tour, reflecting the time and composition of an actual concert set list. The DVD was filmed by Pearl Jam crew members Liz Burns, Steve Gordon, and Kevin Shuss without directors or producers. An additional 50 minutes of special bonus features includes footage from the band's 2000 European tour, backstage footage, previously unreleased music, special consumer-chosen camera angles, the previously unreleased video for "Oceans," and more. Edited by Steve Gordon. Recorded and mixed by Brett Eliason and engineered by John Burton.

America - A Tribute to Heroes (Telethon Broadcast)

Tribute albums and concerts come and go, but America: A Tribute to Heroes may well stand the test of time. Recorded just 10 days after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the two-hour telethon has an appropriately somber tone; it's also refreshingly unpretentious and ego-free, with no audience and no onscreen identification of the musical artists or the actors and others who speak between songs. There are some passionate and moving performances by Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Limp Bizkit and friends, Neil Young (the much-praised "Imagine"), and several more, easily eclipsing the couple of outright turkeys (the overwrought theatrics of Enrique Iglesias and Mariah Carey). To watch the program now, as the horror may have started to fade, is to be reminded of the extraordinary emotions the tragic events of 9/11 aroused; and while pop music may be superfluous in the big picture, its power to inspire and perhaps even heal is something to behold. --Sam Graham

7 Worlds Collide - Live At The St. James - Neil Finn & Friends

7 Worlds Collide is Neil Finn's highly anticipated live album on DVD culled from a series of shows in Aukland, New Zealand in April 2001. The live band was made up of Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr, Neil's brother Tim, Lisa Germano, Soul Coughing's Sebastian Steinberg, and drummer Phil Selway and guitarist Ed O'Brien from Radiohead.

The Who - Live at the Royal Albert Hall

For a band that held its farewell tour in 1982, the Who sound far from finished when it comes to exploring the greater passions and sonic possibilities of its old material. Never has that been more evident than in The Who: Live at the Royal Albert Hall, a record of the group's remarkable stand at a charity gig in London late in 2000. Perennial patrons of adolescents, the Who is clearly energized by an emotional attachment to Britain's Teenage Cancer Trust (beneficiary of the fundraiser), a feeling that also sweeps through several well-chosen guests who happen to be spiritual descendants of the band. After a long opening set that includes a scorching "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere," a gorgeous update of "The Kids Are Alright," and a soulful "Bargain," the Who usher in punk violinist Nigel Kennedy to help electrify "Baba O'Riley," the Jam's founder Paul Weller for a lovely, acoustic rendition of "So Sad About Us," and Stereophonics guitarist-vocalist Kelly Jones for a nearly epiphanous "Substitute."

More than just a parade of celebrities paying homage to Townshend and fellow Olympians Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, the select visitors here challenge the Who to add new colors to old warhorses (Noel Gallagher's psychedelic tinge on "Won't Get Fooled Again") and delicate semiclassics (Eddie Vedder's sympathetic duet with Townshend on "I'm One"). By the end of a robust evening, Daltrey's voice is shot and Townshend looks ready for a shot of vitamins, but anyone who would declare the Who a bunch of worn-out grandpas is spoiling for a Mod-era stomping. This is an essential set for Who loyalists and a wonderful show for everyone else. --Tom Keogh
