No Way Out

No Way Out by Roger Donaldson from MGM (Video & DVD)

This implausible, but effective 1987 film stars Kevin Costner (Bull Durham, Wyatt Earp) as a naval officer and CIA agent who may not be what he seems. This sexy thriller is an espionage mystery and an enigmatic character study of two men trying to be faithful to the loyalties they hold. Costner begins a torrid love affair with the mistress (Sean Young) of the Secretary of Defense, but when she turns up dead, Costner is implicated in a web of intrigue that threatens national security and exposes personal secrets at the highest levels. The Secretary and his men try to cover up the affair while simultaneously searching for a Soviet mole in their ranks. Featuring an exciting chase sequence through the Washington, D.C., subways, No Way Out is a standard issue thriller that nonetheless keeps the action coming. --Robert Lane

Imagine being a hunter leading highly trained bloodhounds in pursuit of a killer...and the trail leads directly to you! Starring Academy-Award® winners Kevin Costner* and Gene Hackman** No Way Out is a mesmerizing look at Washington power (The Hollywood Reporter). Capturing a well-deserved four stars from critic Roger Ebert this taut [and] stylish (Newsweek) thriller is fast-paced and powerful -- a perfect nailbiter (Variety)! In a fit of rage Secretary of Defense David Brice (Hackman) murders his mistress. To keep a lid on the scandal Brice s loyal aide (Will Patton) creates the perfect cover up: he invents a more enticing killer -- a Russian spy -- and then enlists naval commander Tom Farrell (Costner) to find him. But as a chilling twist of fate would have it Farrell also has a strong connection to the victim and now all the clues he s been hired to uncover are leading straight to him! In a desperate race against time Farrell s search for the killer is not only a matter of national security but also a matter of saving his own hide.Special Features:Collectible BookletOriginal Theatrical TrailerSystem Requirements: Running Time 114 MinFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: MYSTERY/SUSPENSE Rating: R UPC: 027616843623 Manufacturer No: 908436

And that's the fact Jack!System Requirements:Running Time: 107 Min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: R UPC: 043396059948 Manufacturer No: 05994

Bill Murray was heading toward a career peak on the back of comedies such as this one from 1981, the second film in his ongoing collaboration with director Ivan Reitman (the two went on to make Ghostbusters). Murray plays a chronic loser who joins the army and fails to find a fan for his ironic sensibilities in his by-the-book sergeant (Warren Oates). When push comes to shove, however, the smirking hero takes charge of his ragtag unit and turns them into fighting machines, albeit to the rhythm of hit songs by Manfred Mann and Sly Stone. The film is occasionally funny, but it mostly plays like any one of a dozen underachieving comedies featuring players from Saturday Night Live and SCTV. --Tom Keogh

      Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective by Tom Shadyac from Warner Home Video

The 1994 box-office hit that turned comedy maniac Jim Carrey into Hollywood's first $20-million man, this gag-filled no-brainer stars Carrey as the titular rubber-faced gumshoe who tracks down lost pets for his heartbroken clients. Ace's latest case involves the apparent kidnapping of the Miami Dolphins' team mascot, Snowflake the dolphin (natch). His investigation is a source of constant aggravation for Miami police lieutenant Lois Einhorn (Sean Young), who turns out to be packing more than a pistol under her skirt. Friends fans will appreciate the presence of Courtney Cox, who remains admirably straight-faced as the Dolphins' publicist and Ace's would-be girlfriend, but of course it's Carrey who steals the show with shameless abandon. One viewing may suffice for a lot of people, but Carrey's hyper antics have made Ace Ventura: Pet Detective one of the bestselling videos of the 1990s. --Jeff Shannon

He's the best there is, in fact, he's the only one there is! He's Ace Ventura Pet Detective. Jim Carrey (The Truman Show, The Mask, Liar Liar) is on the case to find the Miami Dolphins' missing mascot and quarterback Dan Marino. He goes eyeball to eyeball with a man-eating shark, stakes out the Miami Dolphins and woos and wows the ladies. Whether he's undercover, under fire or underwater, he always gets his man...or beast.

        Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)

Blade Runner (The Director's Cut) by Ridley Scott from Warner Home Video

When Ridley Scott's cut of Blade Runner was finally released in 1993, one had to wonder why the studio hadn't done it right the first time--11 years earlier. This version is so much better, mostly because of what's been eliminated (the ludicrous and redundant voice-over narration and the phony happy ending) rather than what's been added (a bit more character development and a brief unicorn dream). Star Harrison Ford originally recorded the narration under duress at the insistence of Warner Bros. executives who thought the story needed further "explanation"; he later confessed that he thought if he did it badly they wouldn't use it. (Moral: Never overestimate the taste of movie executives.) The movie's spectacular futuristic vision of Los Angeles--a perpetually dark and rainy metropolis that's the nightmare antithesis of "Sunny Southern California"--is still its most seductive feature, an otherworldly atmosphere in which you can immerse yourself. The movie's shadowy visual style, along with its classic private-detective/murder-mystery plot line (with Ford on the trail of a murderous android, or "replicant"), makes Blade Runner one of the few science fiction pictures to legitimately claim a place in the film noir tradition. And, as in the best noir, the sleuth discovers a whole lot more (about himself and the people he encounters) than he anticipates.... With Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, Daryl Hannah, Rutger Hauer, and M. Emmet Walsh. --Jim Emerson

Director Joel Schumacher (Falling Down, Batman and Robin) helms this 1989 remake of the popular French romantic comedy Cousin, Cousine. Ted Danson (Three Men and a Baby) and Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet) play two people married to distant cousins (Sean Young, William Petersen) who are having an affair. After meeting at a family wedding and being left alone while their mates steal away, the two spouses commiserate about their cheating partners, and they eventually find themselves falling in love and hiding their burgeoning relationship from the people they care about the most. A story as much about family ties as it is about finding romance in the most unlikely of places, this picturesque tale is a funny and heartwarming find. --Robert Lane

Carl Reiner tried to give the Mel Brooks treatment to the Fatal Attraction/Basic Instinct genre of films about vicious, conniving women and the not-so-bright men who get involved with them. In this case, it's Armand Assante, an actor not particularly known for his comedic chops. He plays a guy who is both a police detective and a defense attorney, so he can defend the people he arrests. He becomes the target of a female stalker (Sean Young, in a bit of typecasting), as well as the dupe in a murder plot involving his wife (Kate Nelligan). Reiner takes a scattershot approach to comedy, hoping to play in the same ballpark as the Zucker brothers or Brooks. While he hits a few singles and the occasional double, he never knocks a joke out of the park and so the movie winds up with an awful lot of pop fouls. --Marshall Fine
