Spider-Man - The New Animated Series (Special Edition)

Spider-Man - The New Animated Series (Special Edition) by Brandon Vietti from Sony Pictures

When a nasty bite by an irradiated spider endows teenager Peter Parker with miraculous arachnid-like powers his death defying heroism wins him admiration from those in need. But being a superhero has its drawbacks...especially when you're in college! As Peter gains the trust of his friends the police call him a vigilante. But he meets the challenge by exercising his wonderful powers for the good of all. Multi-talented performer Neil Patrick Harris (Undercover Brother Starship Troopers) television star Ian Ziering ("Beverly Hills 90210") and singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb ("Cake and Pie") lend their vocal talents to this thrilling computer-animated version of the comic book classic and mega-hit feature film Spider-Man.System Requirements:Starring: Neil Patrick Harris Ian Ziering Lisa Loeb Running Time: 275 Min. Copyright Sony Pictures Home Entertainment 2005Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: CHILDREN/FAMILY Rating: NR UPC: 043396010680 Manufacturer No: 01068

While fans breathlessly await the fate of the computer-animated New Adventures of Spider-Man (it remains in limbo after being dropped by MTV in 2003), they can enjoy all 13 episodes of its first season on this two-disc set, which includes a wealth of extras. Mainframe Entertainment (which created the cult Saturday morning series ReBoot) and writer/executive producer Brian Michael Bendis (the Ultimate Spider-Man comic) give the venerable story a spin by placing Peter Parker (voiced by Neil Patrick Harris) in college alongside pal Harry Osborn (Ian Ziering) and longtime crush Mary Jane Watson (singer Lisa Loeb). As usual, Parker/Spidey must conceal his secret identity while wrangling a host of foes, which are a mix of ones drawn from the comic book (The Lizard, Kraven the Hunter) and brand new enemies (Talon, voiced by rapper Eve). Spider-Man fans seem firmly divided into "for" and "against" camps over the animation, which beautifully captures Spidey's web-slinging, but often looks awkward when depicting everyday movement. Die-hard series viewers and Spider-Man/Marvel collectors in general will be pleased by the set, which includes behind-the-scenes featurettes and commentary by the creators. --Paul Gaita

Domino (Widescreen New Line Platinum Series)

Domino (Widescreen New Line Platinum Series) by Tony Scott from New Line Home Video

Does it really matter what's true or false in Domino if the movie's so deliriously hard to resist? Tony Scott's dizzying film about his late friend, former model and famous bounty hunter Domino Harvey (1969-2005), is more tribute than biography, riffing on Harvey's action-packed exploits and brief reality-TV celebrity in a fractured, manic style that's so visually over-stimulating that it could throw vulnerable viewers into grand mal seizures. Scott's barrage of audio-visual hyperactivity is ultimately exhausting, and Richard Kelly's fragmented screenplay does nothing to discourage Scott's relentless MTV "style" (and we use that word oh-so-loosely here). And yet, with Keira Knightley so ferociously alluring in the title role, and Mickey Rourke (as her boss and bounty-hunting mentor, Ed Mosbey) serving up a second dose of his Sin City comeback, Domino grabs you by the throat and never lets go. Scott's embrace of nihilism is typically facile but it propels a vision of wretched humanity that pulls you in with train-wreck intensity. The movie's bracing humor also makes fine use of a large supporting cast including Christopher Walken, Jacqueline Bissett, Dabney Coleman, Edgar Ramirez, Mo'Nique, Delroy Lindo, Mena Suvari, Lucy Liu, and former Beverly Hills 90210 stars Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green (the latter two poking good-sport fun at themselves as "celebrity hostages"). The accidental overdose death of the real Domino (daughter of The Manchurian Candidate star Laurence Harvey) in the summer of 2005 threw a sad shroud of irony over this movie's theatrical release, but for all its reckless indulgence, Domino is a fitting eulogy for a troubled woman whose credo ("Heads you live, tails you die") is reflected in Scott's fictionalized rendition of the dangerous life she lived. --Jeff Shannon

A trademark Tony Scott film and starring Keira Knightley Domino presents an entertaining mix of gritty action and a sharp visual style. The film is inspired by the life of Domino Harvey a former model who rejected her privileged Beverly Hills life to become a bounty hunter.Running Time: 128 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA UPC: 794043101366 Manufacturer No: N10136

Based on the much-maligned 1998 American Godzilla feature (including the revamped creature design), the animated Godzilla: The Series (1998-2000) actually hews much closer to the original films from Japan, as illustrated in this exciting, three-part episode from the first season. The storyline, which borrows heavily from Destroy All Monsters, has alien invaders take control of the mutated creatures that Godzilla and H.E.A.T. (Humanitarian Ecological Analysis Team) tangled with in the previous 13 episodes of the season-including the Godzilla that rampaged through New York in the theatrical feature, but now augmented with robotic parts (shades of Mecha-Godzilla!). The Monster Wars Trilogy manages to pack considerable excitement and suspense in its brief running time (just over an hour), and benefits greatly from a fine vocal cast, which includes Joe Pantoliano, Paget Brewster, and Kevin Dunn, reprising his role from the theatrical film. No extras are included. --Paul Gaita
