PCU
by Hart Bochner
from 20th Century Fox
Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 10/26/2007 Run time: 79 minutes Rating: Pg13
Almost 10 years before playing a by-the-books college dean in Old School, Jeremy Piven was King Slob of an underground fraternity in this frequently amusing cult comedy. Piven is Droz, who introduces nervous freshman Chris Young to his eclectic frat-mates (which include Jon Favreau) while steering clear of vicious prepster David Spade and malevolent school head Jessica Walter. Piven's off-the-cuff humor and the capable cast help anchor the film's gleefully anarchic tone, which is refreshingly free of the cheap scatological gags that usually sink collegiate comedies. The result is a breezy, likable comedy that should please fans of cinematic campus capers. 20th Century Fox's surprisingly extra-laden DVD includes fullscreen and widescreen versions of the film, as well as commentaries by a typically wry Piven and director Hart Bochner; a short behind-the-scenes featurette; a video for Mudhoney's cover of Elvis Costello's "Pump It Up," which is featured on the soundtrack, and the original theatrical trailer. --Paul Gaita
High School High
by Hart Bochner
from Sony Pictures
An inspired teacher arrives at a tough inner-city school determined to turn gangsters into scholars but in this hilarious spoof its the teacher who gets an eye-opening education. Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 06/01/2004 Starring: Jon Lovitz Mekhi Phifer Run time: 96 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Hart Bochner
Jon Lovitz stars in this spoof of high school movies along the lines of Dangerous Minds, stories of dedicated teachers in tough inner-city schools plagued by gangs and guns. (Yada, yada...) It should come as no surprise that the film is made by the team that created Airplane! and the Naked Gun comedies. High School High is built upon the same brand of goofy, jokey humor, with gags about campus vending machines that dispense malt liquor and milk cartons with the assistant principal's face printed on the side. The story involves Lovitz's efforts to raise his students' grades while coping with criminals and falling for a fellow instructor (Tia Carrere). The film loses its novelty after a short while and the jokes begin to feel less and less funny until you're begging for the end. But the first part of the movie--when the premise is being set up--is pretty good. --Tom Keogh
Just Add Water
by Hart Bochner
from Sony Pictures
A quirky independent film featuring some strong acting by an eclectic cast, Just Add Water captures the desolate spirit of a group of trailer park inhabitants who have little hope of ever escaping their mundane lives. Ray (Dylan Walsh, Nip/Tuck) works as a parking-lot attendant who, like many of the town's inhabitants, is at the mercy of the local babyfaced drug dealer Dirk (Will Rothhaar). Flush with money from his meth business, Dirk is now the town's primary landlord and he takes a no-holds barred attitude when it comes to collecting rent from tenants who barely have enough money to survive. Trapped in an apathetic marriage to the agoraphobic Charlene, Ray enjoys some normal moments with their teenage son Eddie (Jonah Hill, Superbad). Father and son also share an experience neither would want to be reminded of when Ray tries to help Eddie lose his virginity, something Eddie clearly has issues with. Directed and written by actor Hart Bochner, Just Add Water works as an intriguing dark comedy. The casting is spot-on, with a nice appearance by Danny DeVito as an would-be oilman who could make life for these people just a little easier. --Jae-Ha Kim
An all-star cast in this hilarious off-beat comedy about a hapless married man (Dylan Walsh) with a dead-end life in the dead-end town. After he is encouraged by a stranger (Danny DeVito) he begins to dream again and musters the nerve to take back his life and reinvigorate his town.
