This cute movie by William Dear stars John Lithgow as a family man who befriends a Sasquatch (a.k.a. Bigfoot) and brings the friendly monster's oversized, hairy self into his Seattle home. Mayhem and comedy ensue, but things take a heavier turn when a hunter (David Suchet) gets on the creature's trail. Everything hinges on the relationship between Lithgow's character and Harry (the Sasquatch), and that relationship is really quite effective and touching. Don Ameche is a hoot as an old guy who has dreamed of meeting Bigfoot all his life and finally gets the glorious chance. --Tom Keogh

If good things happen to good people, does it follows that bad things happen to bad people or do bad things happen to help people become better? In this third movie of the Sandlot trilogy, the famous and very egocentric baseball player Tommy Santorelli of the Los Angeles Dodgers is knocked unconscious during batting practice and wakes up 29 years in the past. As a 12-year-old boy with the intellect and memories of a 41-year-old, Tommy finds himself surrounded by old friends at a long-forgotten sandlot and completely confused about whether it's all some kind of trauma-induced dream or a second chance to re-live his life. You wouldn't know it by watching the mostly ridiculous escapades on display in Wild America, but this comedy/adventure for young boys is marginally based on the true story of Marshall, Mark, and Marty Stouffer, three young brothers who successfully pursued their dream of becoming wildlife filmmakers. From their home in the South, the Stouffer boys embark on a cross-country trek to the West, where they hope to get rare footage from inside the dreaded Cave of the Sleeping Bears. Along the way they encounter cute British tourist girls, deadly alligators, a rampaging moose, and an Air Force fighter on a bombing range. In other words, Wild America is about as contrived as it could possibly be and still claim to be based on reality, but it is harmless enough for young viewers with its wholesome message about bravery, hard work, and family togetherness. Jonathan Taylor Thomas (from television's Home Improvement) leads the young cast of adventurers. --Jeff Shannon

Balloon Farm

The town of Waterston is facing a severe drought, so it seems odd when a mysterious farmer named Harvey Potter moves into town and attempts to plant a new crop. Thus begins Disney's Balloon Farm, a tale about keeping one's trust and belief even in the bleakest of times. Rip Torn stars as the farmer who finds skepticism in all of the residents except one, a small girl named Willow (Mara Wilson, of Matilda). Greater suspicion arises when it appears that Harvey is able to grow a field of balloons that have seemingly magical powers. The film is quite colorful, not only in its bright hues but also in the variety of characters that populate the town. The suspicion of Waterston's town folk grows, however, when the highly profitable balloon farmer appears to be in cahoots with a company determined to foreclose on the local farms and turn the town into a massive garbage dump. As this is a Disney film for children, one can expect a happy ending--but not before the tension in the town rises and all seems lost. Hope survives, however, and the film teaches its viewers that "It's what you believe" that counts. (Ages 7 and older) --Zachary Lively
