Every species passes down certain guiding wisdoms from one generation to another in hopes of preserving, prolonging, and bettering the lives of their offspring. While Little Foot and his dinosaur friends Petrie, Cera, Spike, and Ducky are only young dinosaurs, their elders have taught them that they must always stay with the group, be home before dark, and keep their eyes and ears open. When three strange yellow belly dinosaurs show up in the valley, it is quickly apparent that they are hopelessly ignorant of the wisdoms Little Foot and his friends hold true and it seems their quest to find Berry Valley and join the rest of their herd is destined to failure without the aid of Little Foot and his friends. Striking off toward new lands, Little Foot and the gang save their new friends Doofah, Loofah, and Foobie from certain death at the hands of the sharp teeth several times, but eventually the young friends realize that although the yellow bellies may not heed the wisdoms they're familiar with, the yellow bellies have some instinctual habits of their own that safeguard them very well. Lots of catchy music permeates this fun, animated, 76-minute adventure and the wholesome message about heeding the lessons of parents, grandparents, and other elders comes through clearly without seeming didactic. Bonus features include the television episode "The Hidden Canyon" in which Little Foot's and his friends' failure to tell the other dinosaurs about a secret place full of tree sweets endangers the entire herd's existence, two interactive DVD games, and two sing-along songs. The Land Before Time V - The Mysterious Island
by Charles Grosvenor
from Universal Studios
This fourth sequel in the series finds "leaf gobblers" eating all the vegetation in Great Valley, driving Littlefoot, the young brontosaurus, and the other dinosaur inhabitants out. Arguments break out among the adults during migration, and Littlefoot and his friends decide to take matters in their own hands by crossing the "big water" to an unknown island. There they meet an old friend from The Land Before Time II--Chomper, the T-rex, who has to protect the gang from his own, carnivorous parents. Plenty of drama in this one, and as the series has been wont to do from the beginning, it shows adults as sometimes being less than perfect. --Tom Keogh
The Land Before Time XI - The Invasion of the Tinysauruses
by Charles Grosvenor
from Universal Studios
The small-fry dinosaur friends are back for their ninth outing in this 77-minute movie, but this time they're not the littlest creatures in the Great Valley. A herd of miniature dinos is discovered when Little Foot tries to sneak some "tree sweets," but falls into the tree instead, knocking down all the blossoms. This gives the tiny herd easy access to the food, which they quickly devour and disappear. But instead of taking the blame, Little Foot inadvertently sends the prehistoric adults into a "get Frankenstein" kind of frenzy by blaming the little ones entirely for the loss of the harvest. The kids find the herd first, of course, and protect it from the adults until everyone settles down and accepts each other's differences. A subplot spotlights Cera and her adjustment to Dad dating Tria, a lady Triceratops friend from Dad's past come back to reignite old passions. (Ages 3 to 7)--Kimberly Heinrichs
The Land Before Time - Journey to Big Water
by Charles Grosvenor
from Universal Studios
In this ninth installment in The Land Before Time series, a cast of spirited, young dinosaurs explores the familiar emotion of loneliness and the need to belong. Torrential rains have turned the Great Valley into an unfamiliar landscape, causing Littlefoot to feel lonely. "You are only as alone as you choose to be," his grandfather tells him. The flood has transported new swimming creatures into the valley, including a playful porpoise named Mo who quickly befriends Littlefoot. Yet Mo must return to his home in the Big Water and so, against parental wishes, Littlefoot and pals escort Mo on an adventurous journey back to the sea. Danger ensues, including "earthshakes" and "sharptooths," while the courageous group grapples with questions of loyalty and friendship. The strengths of the series have not been diluted; its stories continue to captivate using beautiful animation and lively music. Six original tunes make for finger-snapping fun for the younger set. (Ages 3 to 12) --Lynn Gibson
The Land Before Time X - The Great Longneck Migration
by Charles Grosvenor
from Universal Studios
Dreams--or "sleep stories," as these talking dinosaurs dub them--inspire Little Foot and his grandparents to begin a journey to see a climactic event in the 10th installment of this consistently high-quality series. Along the way, they discover that other longnecks have been having similar dreams, thus providing the opportunity for guest voices (Bernadette Peters as "Sue" and James Garner as "Pat") and Little Foot's reunion with his long-lost father (voiced by Kiefer Sutherland). In a subplot, Little Foot's other dino friends decide to follow him, but this story really belongs to the young longneck. He gets to view a solar eclipse--and take credit for saving his species--but has to make a decision between traveling with his newfound dad and returning with the grandparents who raised him. It's a tough decision for a little one, but children who have gone through divorce will identify. (Ages 2 to 7) --Kimberly Heinrichs
The Land Before Time VII - The Stone of Cold Fire
by Charles Grosvenor
from Universal Studios
The seventh installment in the long-lived Land Before Time series corrals the familiar cast of cute-faced prehistoric friends for a thoughtful examination of character. When Littlefoot spies a flying rock that crackles through the sky ablaze "like fire in the trees," the grownups speculate that it may have been a stone of cold fire, capable of performing miracles. Soon enough, flyer Petrie's egomaniac Uncle Pterano catches wind of the sighting and hatches a devious plan involving kidnapping the doe-eyed, adorable Ducky to claim the magical stone for himself--what better way to finally secure what he figures is his rightful spot as leader of the herd? Pterano enlists a fearsome posse of fellow flyers to carry out his scheme, but unlike Pterano, who never intends to harm Ducky, they're not careful with the little dinosaur and lose her in treacherous terrain. While the rest of the gang searches for her with help from beyond the mysterious beyond, Ducky deduces that Pterano may not have a heart of gold, but he's not all bad either--a concept she clarifies for the others by breaking into song. "Good Inside," along with two other original tunes, elevate this video from pretty good to really enjoyable; fans of the series will be relieved to find that a string of successive shows hasn't resulted in watered-down characters or tired story lines. --Tammy La Gorce
