Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy

After 15 years of hit movies for Universal Studios, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello left the studio in the twilight of their partnership with the last of their monster comedies. Decked out in desert safari gear, the boys go looking for a job with an Egyptologist and wind up in the middle of a conspiracy concerning the murdered professor, an ancient mummy, and a magical medallion that, true to form, bumbling Costello manages to eat for dinner. Marie Windsor, the boss lady of a gang of treasure hunting crooks, dresses in a harem outfit to vamp for our chubby little hero, and the eternally stiff Richard Deacon hilariously plays the leader of an Egyptian mummy cult like a high school principal decked out for Halloween. Directed by longtime collaborator Charles Lamont, it's a typical Abbott and Costello farce with disappearing corpses, mistaken identities, and wacky word plays ("Take your pick" riffs on "Who's on first" with garden tools). While not as clever or spirited as their original monster mash Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, the vaudeville veterans are still masters of the double take and fast-talk patter, and the picture climaxes with a screwball chase that involves not one, not two, but three mummies skittering through the phoniest looking pyramid this side of community theater. In the good old days of 16mm shmutz, programming was never much of an art form. Storefront cinemas would throw up whatever happened to be making the rounds at the time and, when they ran out of product, pull together a grab bag of whatever odds and ends happened to be lying around in back of the projection booth. This edition of the After Hours Collector s monthly DVD sleaze-fest follows in this grand tradition, offering up a Whitman Sampler of slightly stale, cream-filled confections. Something noteworthy seems to reside in every pile of trash, however, and the present threadbare threefer certainly contains its quotient of slippery sex and god-awful aesthetics. So standards be damned, let s start the show.

Salome Where She Danced

The camp classic drama that catapolted De Carlo into stardom. During the Austrian-Prussian war, Anna Marie (De Carlo) is a dancer who is forced to flee her country after she is accused of being a spy. She ends up in a lawless western town in Arizona, where she uses her charms and dancing skills to transform herself into "Salome" during her dance routines. She makes such an impact on the town, eventually taming it, that they re-name the town "Salome, Where She Danced." Later on, she moves to San Francisco, where she meets a wealthy Russian man, seduces him, and has him build her her own opera house to perform in. Anna Marie spends her life manipulating one man after another to get what she wants, and they fall fall for her.

The Three Stooges - Goofs on the Loose (Colorized / Black & White)

A four-pack of mid-'30s Three Stooges shorts, with enough concentrated nyuk-nyuks to satisfy fans. Two of the shorts are from their first year with Columbia, 1934. "Men in Black" has the boys as residents in a very unlucky hospital. It's nonstop mayhem, featuring an unorthodox approach to healing (the words "Give 'em the anesthetic" usually means a mallet will be applied to skull) and a good running gag about an ill-advised glass door. This one was nominated for the best short subject Oscar. "Punch Drunks" is an all-time Stooges gem, with Curly as Moe's new boxing discovery--but he can only achieve his fighting fury when Larry plays "Pop Goes the Weasel" on the violin.

From 1937, "The Sitter Downers" has three brides for three stooges, but their honeymoon is delayed by the building of a house, in typical Stooges style. Curly is wound up especially tight in this one, and it has some primo sight gags about home construction. "Playing the Ponies" navigates a zig-zag Stooges storyline, taking them from restaurant (Curly fixes an appetizing filet of sole) to horse track. It has a classic Stooges hand jive, although it shows how slapdash their shtick could get.

The DVD has Columbia's "ChromaChoice" colorized gimmick, which simply means easy toggling between the original (well preserved) black-and-white shorts and the colorized versions. The colorized images are sensibly rendered, but they still have that washed-out paleness they've always had--eggshell greens and light browns abound. So real Stooges fans can ignore the color, and ponder the eternal questions: Why was Moe so angry? Why is a bald man named Curly? What was the deal on Larry?
