Highlander: The Source

Highlander: The Source by Brett Leonard from Lions Gate

With spinoffs including live action and animated films and television series, comic books, and more, the Highlander franchise has yielded its fair share of noble moments over the years, starting with the original film in 1986. But while Highlander 5: The Source has some cool special effects work and enough video game violence to enthrall adolescent boys, longtime fans agree that this made-for-TV flick is, to put it mildly, no Oscar contender. Adrian Paul, reprising the role he played in Highlander: Endgame (2000) and the Highlander TV series, is Duncan MacLeod, the ageless Scotsman hailing from the 16th Century. The storyline isn't easy to decipher, but it has to do with the imminent cosmic alignment of the planets and other celestial bodies, which will lead to "the moment of the Source," wherein lies the secret to the origin of MacLeod and his crew's immortality. (A note about the film's tagline, "The quest for mortality begins": Seems that being immortal ain't all it's cracked up to be; not only can these guys die, but they are unable to breed, which is a big problem for Duncan and his mortal girlfriend, hence his plan to locate the Source and become, you know, a regular dude.) This is generic comic book stuff, taking place in a crumbling, Road Warrior-esque world populated by characters with names like The Elder, The Guardian, The Watchers, and The Ancient One. The script, by Stephen Kelvin Watkins and Mark Bradley, is fraught with big, portentous statements, while director Brett Leonard seems more interested in staging the next fight sequence than giving us a clue as to what's actually going on. If this is the end of the Highlander story, and many seem to think it will be, fans had every right to hope for a more dignified death knell than The Source. --Sam Graham

Immortals they have secretly dwelt among us for thousands of years but their origins have been shrouded in mystery. The answers prophets say are to be found in The Source. The last band of eternal warriors lead by Duncan MacLeod the Highlander have set out on a treacherous quest to find the origin of their immortality. But to learn the truth they must first defeat The Guardian of the Source a powerful killer who will destroy all who seek its secrets.System Requirements:Running Time: 86 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: SCI-FI/FANTASY/FANTASY Rating: R UPC: 031398217893 Manufacturer No: 21789

The Lawnmower Man (New Line Platinum Series)

The Lawnmower Man (New Line Platinum Series) by Brett Leonard from New Line Home Video

In 1992, The Lawnmower Man was hailed as a CGI (computer-generated image) breakthrough. It's fascinating to consider it in a historical context, knowing it came just a year after Terminator 2: Judgment Day and was followed by Jurassic Park a year later. Written and directed by Brett Leonard, The Lawnmower Man focuses on a scientist (Pierce Brosnan) trying to utilize technology for governmental gain. As with all top-secret government projects in the movies, it goes horribly wrong. Forced to progress from a chimp to a human subject, Brosnan secretly recruits local backwards boy and lawnmower pusher Jobe (Jeff Fahey). The increases in intelligence are alarming. He learns Latin in two hours, becomes an object of sexual desire (apparently all it takes is cowboy boots), and then develops telepathic and telekinetic abilities. What the film ought to be remembered and appreciated for are the visuals, which undoubtedly advanced the arcade and home computer game industry. --Paul Tonks

T-Rex - Back to the Cretaceous (IMAX)

T-Rex - Back to the Cretaceous (IMAX) by Brett Leonard from New Line Home Video

Did you ever want to get so close to a mama tyrannosaur that you could pat her scaly reptilian snout? Now you'll know what that's like, thanks to aspiring paleontologist Ally Hayden (Liz Stauber), the teenage heroine of the 1998 IMAX film T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous. Ally's dino-expert father (Peter Horton) has just returned from his latest dig with a fossilized T. rex egg, and when Ally accidentally cracks the egg in her dad's museum laboratory, a puff of mysterious smoke catapults her back to the Cretaceous period, when dinosaurs-- especially T. rex--ruled the Earth. With her imagination in full flight (along with an astonishingly realistic pterodactyl), Ally confirms the dinosaur theories of her own speculative research, and she also encounters pioneering dinosaur illustrator Charles Knight (Tuck Milligan) and legendary paleontologist Barnum Brown (Laurie Murdoch). Best of all, she comes face to face with a maternal tyrannosaur, earning its respect by protecting one of its incubating eggs.

T-Rex won't be as effective on DVD (where the IMAX 3-D effects are amusingly pointless), but it's guaranteed to please anyone who enjoyed the similarly astounding CGI effects of Walking with Dinosaurs. Stauber is a refreshingly normal teen star, and although much of the dialogue sounds like it was cribbed from a grade-school science text, its educational value is perfectly matched to the wonders of Ally's prehistoric adventure. Director Brett Leonard previously helmed the pioneering FX flick The Lawnmower Man, and here he demonstrates a warmer, more accessible sense of wonder for kids and parents alike. At 45 minutes, this IMAX dazzler never wears out its welcome. --Jeff Shannon

Dinosaurs are very much alive - at least in the mind of teenager Ally Hayden. When a museum accident transports Ally on an adverture back in time to explore the terrain and territory of life-size dinosaurs she is thrust literally nose-to-nose with the largest and most realistic dinosaur ever to appear on a movie screen - the fearsome 20-foot tall 15-ton Tyrannosaurus Rex.Running Time: 45 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE UPC: 794051800923 Manufacturer No: X8009
