Spider's Web
by Paul Levine
from Sony Pictures
This mix of corporate skullduggery and trashy sex stars Kari Wuhrer (whose career has ranged from Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time to Anaconda) as a Machiavellian executive tired of being passed over in favor of male execs. Suddenly she falls into a romance with the heir of a glass-making fortune (Stephen Baldwin), with whom she has lots of hot sex and concocts a plan to rob his father of $40 million. But just when everything seems to be going her way, someone pulls a double-cross, and Wuhrer has to scramble before she loses everything. Spider's Web features lots of bare flesh and a fairly generic plot and dialogue. Wuhrer is enjoyably conniving; Baldwin, who once seemed the most promising of the Baldwins, seems to have put his talent and his career on autopilot. --Bret Fetzer
Deal of a Lifetime
from MGM (Video & DVD)
Imagine Faust set in high school. Now imagine it inspired by the sex comedies of the '80s, and cast with actors who look like they're nearing their 10-year reunion. Kevin Pollack stars as the Mephistopheles-inspired Jerry, the guy in charge of buying souls for Satan. His latest victim is high school nerd Henry Spooner (Michael A. Goorjian) after the kid mutters under his breath how he would sell his soul to the devil in order to go out with the prettiest popular girl in the school, Lori Petler (Shiri Appleby). Henry is happy enough to use the powers of evil to become popular until he realizes it's testing his relationship with his best friend. Plus, he starts to believe he's becoming popular by himself, not because of the manipulations of the devil. Deal of a Lifetime is not a great movie, but Kevin Pollack fans will want to check it out because he's given free reign to ham it up big-time and make a lot of costume changes. --Andy Spletzer
Henry Spooner would sell his soul for a date with the most popular girl in school and now he finally has the chance! Starring Kevin Pollak (The Usual Suspects) and fresh new talents Shiri Appleby ("Roswell"), Jennifer Rubin (The Crush) and Michael Goorjian (Leaving Las Vegas), Deal of a Lifetime is a "hell-arious" romantic comedy! Unpopular, un-cool and totally un-datable, Henry (Goorjian) doesn't have a hell of a chance with super-hot cheerleader Laurie Petler (Appleby) or does he? Tempted by the Devil's sleaze-ball agent (Pollak), Henry soon gets his hands on fame, fortune and Laurie. But just as his every wish begins to come true, Henry has the hilarious realization that, when it comes to a deal with the Devil, getting everything he ever wanted mayjust be a whole lot more trouble than he bargained for!
