Girls Just Want to Have Fun

Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt dance their way through Girls Just Want to Have Fun, a glorious example of 1980s kitsch. Janey (Parker), the new girl at a Catholic high school in Chicago, dreams of becoming a dancer on Dance TV. With the help of new wave hipster Lynne (Hunt), Janey enters a dance contest and gets paired with Jeff (Lee Montgomery), a rebel in spandex, and the two are soon smitten with each other. Unfortunately, they've made an enemy of a snooty rich girl, who vows to take them down. Everything about Girls Just Want to Have Fun is cheap and cheesy--it doesn't even have the Cyndi Lauper version of the title song--but that doesn't make it any less goofily entertaining, particularly when a debutante ball is wrecked by a bizarre combination of punk rockers and female bodybuilders. In the mid-1980s, standup comic Rodney Dangerfield underwent a renewed wave of popularity, finding a surprisingly enthusiastic baby-boomer audience. What else to do but make a movie that shows off Dangerfield's alternately knowing and boorish humor? This may not be on the AFI list of great films, but it delivers laughs aplenty in its story of a rough-edged tycoon who made his fortune in clothes for the stout and tall and decides to attend college in order to be closer to his son (Keith Gordon). There's not much plot, but lots of room for Dangerfield's one-line riffs. The goggle-eyed comic veteran displays surprising charm, enough to make his romance with professor Sally Kellerman believable. Look for cameos by late comedian Sam Kinison and author Kurt Vonnegut Jr. --Marshall Fine

Passport To Paris

Resistance is futile! The Olsen Twins are everywhere, and you better get used to it, especially if you have a daughter between the ages of 4 and 10. Now they're not only taking over the U.S.; they've moved on to the city of light, Paris. Unlike their series (in which Mary-Kate and Ashley play themselves), in this latest venture they play fictional alter-egos in the form of superficial, boy-crazy, 13-year-olds. Their movie mom worries their world is too small and the girls are shipped off to Paris to visit their grandfather, the U.S. ambassador to France (yes, you read that right). He doesn't have much time for them, so he prepares a daily itinerary and forces an associate, an aspiring junior version of himself, to accompany the girls. But leave it to those wacky gals: within a few days, he's partying along with them and their newfound French beaus (played by young cutie patooties who have the worst French accents this side of Hee Haw). The movie is harmless enough, and despite a pervasive materialism in Olsen fare, loyalty and friendship are at the forefront. The French locations are gorgeous and enticing. (Ages 4 and up) --N.F.
