Coach Nash (Gary Cole) is one of the most popular teachers at Tate High School. When he pays special attention to Amy (Nicholle = Tom), a fourteen year-old freshman, she is flattered - until he crosses the line by seducing her. Soon the rumor mill is in full swing and Amy is too ashamed to confide in anyone. The principal dismisses the suspicions because of the coach's importance to the football team. His behavior toward Amy becomes increasingly erratic and he even threatens suicide. Finally, Amy breaks down and confesses the truth to her mother (Mary Kay Place). Coach Nash pleads guilty and receives a jail sentence for his actions. But, Amy's parents feel the school system should be held responsible for failure to protect their daughter from this predator. With the help of an attorney who shares the same convictions, they are determined to set a precedent to protect other children in the future. Law & Order - Special Victims Unit - The Premiere Episode

Originally called Sex Crimes, executive producer Dick Wolf wisely opted for something less lurid when the second in the inexhaustible Law & Order franchise hit the air in 1999. Still, as the opening voiceover makes clear, the "sexually based offenses" investigated by New York's Special Victims Unit can be "especially heinous." Wolf penned series premier "Payback," which sets the scene, but not the tone. It's a lively, if uneasy mix between horror (rape) and comedy (risqué banter). As the first season progressed, humor would be written out altogether (leaving Richard Belzer's Homicide-derived John Munch with increasingly less to do), and less emphasis would be placed on the home lives of this "elite squad of dedicated detectives." Mostly, "Payback" introduces us to the unit, centering around partners Olivia Benton (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni). For two people with so little in common, they make a terrific team--arguably one of TV's best. Stabler is married with four children; Benton is single and her closest relationship is with her mother (Elizabeth Ashley). While Stabler can get a little rough with suspects, Benton tends to over-empathize with the victims. They report to the no-nonsense Captain Cragen (Law & Order vet Dann Florek). Like the parent program's Lenny Briscoe, he's a recovering alcoholic. Dean Winters and Michelle Hurd round out the rock-solid cast. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

A compelling true story of a father who goes to court to fight for his right to keep his adopted daughter. Unable to conceive a child, Kim Lussier (Teri Polo) loses no time investigating adoption. To her husband, Keith (Andrew McCarthy), the adoption process seems like a remote possibility, until he sees a picture of his daughter to be, whom they name Brittany. When Kim is suddenly diagnosed with cancer, it seems that their dream of becoming parents may not come true. But, she receives a positive prognosis and the adoption process continues. With Kim recovering from surgery and weakened by chemotherapy, Keith assumes most of the parental responsibilities when Brittany comes home. Then, Kim's illness recurs and soon Keith is a single parent. With barely any time for Keith to grieve, the agency refuses to finalize his adoption of Brittany and places her in another home. All of Keith's time and energy must now be devoted to preparation for the most important battle of his life. He lost his wife but he will not lose his child.

On Universal's Brilliant But Cancelled: Crime Dramas, whodunit fans get a chance to relive classic episodes of four critically acclaimed but short-lived series: Johnny Staccato, Delvecchio, Gideon Oliver, and Touching Evil. Spanning decades of television, the DVD's highlight is Johnny Staccato. Starring John Cassavetes in the title role, the episode (ca. 1959) stands up surprisingly well in modern times. Cassavetes is so suave and cool that no one would doubt his ability to play a jazz musician who happens to solve crimes at night. Each of the episodes has its own merits--Judd Hirsch is appropriately intense in Steven Bochco's Delvecchio, Louis Gossett Jr. is charmingly brilliant as an anthropology professor/sleuth in Gideon Oliver, and the elite crime fighters in Touching Evil could give anyone on Law & Order a run for their money. But the problem with this concept is that aside from the crime-solving element, the shows don't flow well from one to the next and ultimately leaves the viewer wanting to see more than just one episode from each show. --Jae-Ha Kim
