The Little Rascals

The Little Rascals by Penelope Spheeris from Universal Studios

In the new adventures of Spanky and Our Gang, their \""boys only\"" club is threatened when Alfalfa falls in love, their clubhouse burns down, and their go-cart is stolen.
    Genre: Feature Film-Comedy
    Rating: PG
    Release Date: 5-JAN-1999
    Media Type: DVD

Kids may enjoy the slapstick of this modern reworking of the old Our Gang comedies, but parents who grew up watching them on TV (or grandparents who saw them at theaters) will wonder why anyone would want to be involved in this pathetic remake. Directed by Penelope Spheeris, the film takes look-alike kids and casts them as Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, and the rest, minus any sense of what made the old Hal Roach comedies funny. Instead of kids being kids, these are kids doing shtick while recycling such old bits as the He-Man Woman Haters Club, the kids' go-cart race, and Spanky and Alfalfa dressing as girls. Devoid of charm or wit. --Marshall Fine

    Wayne's World

    Wayne's World from Paramount

TV's Saturday Night Live has been like the evil twin of the legendary alchemist's stone, which supposedly could turn lead into gold. SNL usually does the opposite, taking rich comic premises from short skits and extrapolating them into overblown and unfunny full-length films. ("The Coneheads"? Puh-leeze!) But this film proved to be the exception, thanks to Mike Myers's wonderfully rude lowbrow humor and his full-bodied understanding of who his character is. Wayne Campbell (Myers) and his nerdy pal Garth (Dana Carvey) are teens who live at home and have their own low-rent cable-access show in Aurora, Illinios, in which they celebrate their favorite female movie stars and heavy-metal bands. When a Chicago TV station smells a potential youth-audience ratings hit, the station's weasely executive (Rob Lowe) tries to coopt the show--and steal Wayne's new rock & roll girlfriend (Tia Carrere) at the same time. It's filled with all kinds of knowing spoofs of movie conventions, from Wayne talking to the camera (and forbidding other characters to do so) to hilariously self-conscious product placements and labeling a moment a "Gratuitous Sex Scene." Dumb--and very funny. --Marshall Fine

Temptations abound when Wayne and Garth are offered a fat contract to tape their late night show at a sleazy TV executive's network.

      Black Sheep

Black Sheep by Penelope Spheeris from Paramount

Chris Farley plays the disaster-prone brother of a gubernatorial candidate in Washington State. Though he is well meaning, the havoc he creates on the campaign trail is drawing press attention, so a snotty aide (David Spade) to the politician is dispatched to keep the big lug under control. Spade's character initially insults his charge as often as possible, but over time, the two bond and end up becoming a part of the final election push. Farley and Spade have some very funny moments, but overall the film feels rushed and poorly planned. Constant changes in character and script happen recklessly and randomly so that nothing ever really makes sense; the film keeps changing the rules by which it plays. --Tom Keogh

An aspiring gubernatorial candidate tries very hard to keep his bumbling brother out of the limelight and from helping with his campaign.
        Genre: Feature Film-Comedy
        Rating: PG13

        The Beverly Hillbillies

The Beverly Hillbillies by Penelope Spheeris from 20th Century Fox

Jim Varney, Cloris Leachman, Lily Tomlin and Dabney Coleman star in the riotous rags-to-riches story of America's favorite backwoods billionaires. It features hilarious cameos by Dolly Parton, Buddy Ebsen and Zsa Zsa Gabor. Instant oil baron Jed Clampett moves Granny and his kin from the Ozark hills to Beverly Hills. Though unsophisticated, the Clampetts are decent, hard-working, trusting people- in other words, perfect marks for the swindlers, social climbers and gold diggers who can't wait to welcome them! Even their Fawning bankers, Miss Hathaway and Mr. Drysdale, may not be able to keep the Clampett cash from disappearing into the Hills!

          Senseless

Senseless by Penelope Spheeris from Dimension

Marlon Wayans plays a struggling college student working several jobs to make ends meet and support his mother and family at the same time he's trying to win an entry-level job at a prestigious Wall Street firm. To make a little extra money, he agrees to be a medical test subject and takes a drug that amplifies all of his senses. The comedy supposedly emanates from his drastic reactions to outrageous stimuli and, to be sure, Wayans is a rubber-faced comic. But the writing is never on a par with his flexibility; even the presence of David Spade as Wayans's nemesis--a smug frat boy who looks down his pointy little nose at Wayans--the movie is never more than sporadically funny. --Marshall Fine

Get ready for the outrageous, laugh-out-loud comedy about two college students who'll try anything to get ahead! Perpetually poor Darryl (Marlon Wayans -- THE SIXTH MAN) is destined to lose his dream Wall Street job to a wealthy snob (David Spade -- TOMMY BOY, TV's JUST SHOOT ME) ... until Darryl volunteers for a high-paying scientific experiment that gives him superhuman senses -- and the competitive edge he needs! But when the side effects start, he finds his chances for success sabotaged by attacks of sensory overload! Another hip laugh riot from the director of WAYNE'S WORLD, SENSELESS is wild entertainment fun that rocks to a jammin' soundtrack by today's hotest recording artists!

                Suburbia

Suburbia by Penelope Spheeris from Buena Vista Home Entertainment

"Quite a few directors share and reflect the youthful rebellion and pop culture of their own generation. Penelope Spheeris is unique in that she uses her counter-culture sympathies to explore the lives, music, and attitudes of the new younger generation. You can see this in her movies. After documenting the punk scene in THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION, she made SUBURBIA for me, in which she explored the world of alienated suburban teenagers, and later had a huge hit with WAYNE'S WORLD." -- Roger Corman~~When family problems and a sense of worthlessness overcome Evan, he finds escape with the orphans of a throwaway society. Calling themselves T.R. ("The Rejected"), these runaways hold on to one another like family, living in abandoned houses away from the society that despises them. SUBURBIA is THE punk rock movie, depicting with unbridled realism the lives, loves, and misfortunes of a discarded youth
