Treut's documentary GENDERNAUTS is an illuminating and compassionate look at the world of transgender identity, as seen through portraits of some of San Francisco's leading gender mixers. Whether by birth or by choice, sometimes with the assistance of hormones or surgical prostheses, we meet those who blur the lines of male and female and who tear down stereotypes and taboos.
Treut elicits testimonials and opinions from a diverse array of personalities, such as former Penthouse model Tornado who has been a lover to many transgender people and a surrogate mother to others, sex goddess Annie Sprinkle, and the "Goddess of Cyberspace" Sandy Stone of the University of Texas at Austin. We get to know Max Wolf Valerio, who reads from his book, 'Max, A Man'; Jordy Jones and his Net art; Texas Tomboy and his video art; Stafford, who explores new business venues and, together with Jordy Jones, organizes "Club Confidential," the world's leading gender bender event. We also meet Hida, an intersexed (hermaphrodite) woman, who happily inhabits the middle ground between male and female.
