The Punisher [Blu-ray]

The Punisher [Blu-ray] by Jonathan Hensleigh from Lions Gate

    Lionsgate The Punisher (Blu-ray)
The Punisher walks through the world we all know, a world darkened by war, crime, cruelty and injustice. He has no superpowers to battle the evil he sees - only his fierce intelligence, his years of combat experience and, above all, his iron determination to avenge those wronged by society's villains.

The impressively muscular chest of Tom Jane is the focal point of The Punisher, a movie based on a Marvel Comics superhero. Frank Castle (Jane, Deep Blue Sea) retires from the FBI, which means--as any moviegoer expects--that his family is toast. Howard Saint (John Travolta, Face/Off), a shady Florida businessman whose son was killed in Castle's last mission, orders a hit not only on Castle's wife and child, but also on his parents and a whole bunch of aunts, uncles, cousins, and so forth. The killers shoot Castle himself in the chest, but he inexplicably survives and--as any moviegoer expects--sets out to even the score. Implausibly, given his sometimes curious and roundabout methods, he succeeds. Also featuring Will Patton (Armageddon) as an oily thug, Laura Harring (Mulholland Drive) as Saint's fleshpot wife, and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (X-Men) as a waitress with bad taste in men. --Bret Fetzer

        The Punisher

The Punisher by Mark Goldblatt from Live / Artisan

First, a few facts. Dolph Lundgren expresses emotions ranging from stoic to, well, really stoic. There are holes in the story large enough to pilot the Exxon Valdez through without spilling a drop. And the film is littered with action movie clichés. But none of this matters. The Punisher succeeds because it stays true to its origins, the Marvel comic of the same name. Studio-engineered films such as Batman never quite capture the mixture of loyalty and betrayal, justice and revenge, moral ambiguity and emotional truth that are the hallmarks of the graphic novel. Films such as Darkman do. So does The Punisher. Lundgren plays Frank Castle, a dedicated policeman whose family was wiped out in a mob hit. He went underground (literally) and, as the Punisher, has been exacting his revenge, killing 125 mobsters in the past five years. But when the yakuza (Japanese Mafia) moves in on the mob's territory and kidnaps their children, it's up to the Punisher to rescue the kids. The action blazes, Lundgren (a former full-contact karate champ) moves with feral grace, the production design is a pleasure to watch, and director Mark Goldblatt (whose credits as editor include such big films as Starship Troopers and True Lies) has a clean, efficient style. --Geof Miller

          The Punisher/Rambo: First Blood

The Punisher/Rambo: First Blood from Lions Gate

Marvel Comics presents a second big-screen version of THE PUNISHER with this action-packed adaptation from screenwriter-turned-director Jonathan Hensleigh. Frank Castle (Tom Jane) is a retired F.B.I. agent spurred into action after the merciless slaying of his wife father and son. Adopting the superhero guise of the Punisher Castle aims to wreak vengeance by tracking down the killers. All clues point to Howard Saint (John Travolta) a ruthless businessman and nightclub owner whose son was mistakenly killed by Castle in a botched undercover operation back in his F.B.I. days. Unique among Marvel superheroes the Punisher possesses no special powers just remarkable strength paired with a blind determination to avenge his family. As he hunts down Saint Castle surrounds himself with three fellow societal outcasts to get the job done namely Joan (Rebecca Romijn) Bumpo (John Pinette) and Dave (Ben Foster). Director Hensleigh eschews flashy CGI effects for the bulk of the movie and instead reverts to old action-movie staples such as thrilling stunt work gunfights and huge explosions. The old-fashioned feel suits THE PUNISHER well providing an apt mirror of the hero's own lack of super-powers. Hensleigh winds the film through a thrilling white-knuckle ride to its spectacular conclusion ultimately providing a highly appropriate movie for one of Marvel's lesser-known comic-book heroes.FIRST BLOOD: After being arrested for a crime which he did not commit a Green Beret survivor of the Vietnam War begins having terrible nightmares. This gripping action-packed tale demonstrates the tragic psychological consequences of armed struggle.System Requirements:Running Time: 219 Mins.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE Rating: NR UPC: 012236210238 Manufacturer No: 21023
