Gate Keepers 21 - Invader Hunters (Vol. 1)

In the Gatekeepers TV series (2000), irrepressible Shun and his gang of psychics fought the Invaders, biological experiments that fed on human greed, in 1969. This new OAV set in 2001 focuses on scornful, alienated Ayane. She's not a natural Gatekeeper, but relies on technology in her battles with the Invaders. She recruits Miu, a girl in her school who is a Gatekeeper. Despite her abilities, Miu whines and screams; Ayane dismisses her as a "useless twit." The only returning character is Yukino, the kimono-clad psychic of the snows--who's mocked by a sinister, ballerina-like blonde linked to the Invaders. Shun and the gang fought to defend the people they loved. Ayane earns a bounty on the crystals that remain when Invaders are destroyed, and wishes the people in Tokyo would disappear: hardly a likeable heroine. Meanwhile, relentless attack by the invaders led by the mysterious Ghost Girl and the revived Kaiser Kikai continues... Why is Ayane reluctant to use her gate- a legacy of her father, Shun Ukiya? Gate Keepers 21 - Final Gate

The filmmakers introduce a raft of flashy CG special effects as the Gatekeepers OVA reaches its conclusion: explosions, sparkles, powerful gates, armies of winged invaders, and a gargantuan mecha that straddles Tokyo. Satoka, who wields the Gate of Swords, joins forces with alienated Ayane and infantile Miu. Although the Invaders are distillations of human greed and corruption, the mysterious Ghost Girl unleashes the climactic battle. Like Yugi in Tenchi in Tokyo, she plans to destroy the world to create a playground for herself and her supposed friend, Ayane. Somehow, Ayane gains the power to destroy Ghost Girl, returning the world to normalcy. Despite the elaborate effects, this incoherent OVA is far less entertaining than the original series: the viewer can't help missing the rambunctious good humor that made Shun and his friends so appealing. Miu continues to shun the AEGIS Network because she hates the idea of hurting people, but Satoka, a Gate Keeper Kageyama recruited from Kobe seems to be the opposite - she hunts them for pleasure! Unfortunately, the Invaders don't allow the Gate Keepers the luxury of time for debate: Ayane is ambushed and goes into a coma, Count Akuma returns, stronger than ever, and Ghost Girl can't wait to turn everyone into Invaders... but why does Ghost Girl have a soft spot for Ayane?!

Gate Keepers - The New Threat (Vol. 4)

This comedy-adventure takes some unexpected turns as it reaches its midpoint. Shun, Ruriko, and their comrades at AEGIS confront two of the three "Top Invader Executives," who are far more powerful than the lock-stepping minions they've fought previously. Genie-like Baron Akuma Hakushaku creates worlds of illusion where the members of the Keepers experience their hidden desires. Kikai Shogun merges with machinery--including the engine of the bullet train Shun is riding with his mother and younger sister. The tone shifts to mystic and artistic when Shun and Ruriko search for a missing transport carrier that's been attacked by the Invaders. In the countryside, they meet the mysterious Yukino, who speaks in formal (i.e. oblique) Japanese poetry and whose memories seem to stretch back into the distant past. Viewers can obviously expect to see more of all three characters in upcoming adventures. Rated 13 Up: Violence, mild risqué humor. --Charles Solomon
