Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Collection 4

Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Collection 4 by Kôichi Mashimo from Adv Films

The metamorphosis of Justy Ueki Tylor is complete: he's no longer the passive dope who began the series, but a drunken wise fool out of a Zen fable. His transition is entertaining, but the filmmakers leave a lot of threads hanging when the 26-episode series ends. Tylor's not-quite romance with Raalgon empress Azalyn continues, although she rejoins her fleet. At the behest of her intriguing minister Wang, she orders an all-out assault on the United Planets Space Force but places the noble General Dom in command. He and Tylor contrive to end the war--to the strains of the William Tell Overture--with no bloodshed and with each side able to claim victory. His mission accomplished, Tylor tires of the military. The crew of the derelict Soyokaze are given promotions and assigned to the Aso, the UPSF's newest, most sophisticated cruiser, except for Yuriko, who's made a deputy of intelligence. Of course, Tylor returns triumphantly in the Soyokaze at the last minute, his crew unites behind him, and they set off in search of new adventures--which soon follow in an original animation video series. It's all played for laughs, but such major plot points as the outcome of Wang's scheme to usurp the Raalgon throne and the reasons for the UPSF admirals' attacks on Tylor are left unexplained and unresolved. Unrated: suitable for ages 12 and up: sexual humor, minor nudity, violence, alcohol use. --Charles Solomon

Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Collection 1

Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Collection 1 by Kôichi Mashimo from Adv Films

Justy Ueki Tylor is an outstanding example of an odd anime type--the endearing dolt. Just as war is erupting between Earth and the Raalgon Empire, Tyler enlists in the United Planets Space Force because he wants "an easy life." Through plain dumb luck, he ends up in the wrong place at the right time and wins a promotion to captain of the Soyokaze ("The Gentle Breeze"), a broken-down battle cruiser manned by a crew of losers and misfits. Tylor's lack of interest in the crises at hand astounds and appalls his more serious subordinates, especially Lieutenant Makoto Yamamoto, a caricature of a dedicated anime hero, and the impatient Lieutenant Commander Yuriko Star. Tylor's fumbling success brings him to the attention of the 16-year-old Raalgon empress, who orders Captain Ru Baruba Dom to observe, then capture this puzzling enemy. The resulting misadventures are very silly and often funny, especially when they play as satires of the military mindset. Captain Tylor falters when the title character appears less irresponsible than stupid. Akito in Martian Successor Nadesico and Gawl in Generator Gawl are all improbable, comic heroes, but they command real abilities and share a dedication to their duties. Tylor's blithe disinterest in anything but "an easy life" (and the occasional pretty girl) veers between hilarious and irritating, which explains the divided opinions this series generates among fans. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up: sexual humor, minor nudity, violence, alcohol and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Collection 2

Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Collection 2 by Kôichi Mashimo from Adv Films

As this zany space adventure continues, title character Justy Ueki Tylor undergoes something of a transformation, becoming less careless and more appealing: in episodes 8 and 14, he wins over Raalgon android-agent Harumi with his low-key charm. But he's still no poster boy for the United Planets Space Force. The scheming admirals at UPSF Headquarters plot what they hope will be the end of Tylor by downgrading the Soyokaze--the greatest shame a crew can endure. Even the thuggish Marines are upset, but Tylor remains oblivious. Yuriko finds a way for him to challenge the order, which he blows while his crew members consult tealeaves and pluck petals off daisies. Tylor, who attracts trouble the way a magnet attracts iron filings, destroys the fleet of the vengeful Raalgon admiral Donan through sheer dumb luck--and earns an upgrade. The thread of the narrative gets lost in episode 12, when Tylor, Yuriko, Harumi, and Lieutenant Yamamoto find themselves in a strange ghost story involving the last captain of the Soyokaze. The filmmakers never really explain what's going on, although they suggest that Admiral Fuji has been indulging in dirty tricks for a long time. A new threat emerges in episode 14, when the Frazetta-esque Shia-Has decides she will be the one to capture Tylor for the Raalgon empress. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up: sexual humor, minor nudity, violence, alcohol and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Collection Boxed Set

Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Collection Boxed Set by Kôichi Mashimo from Adv Films

This wacky sci-fi comedy-adventure originally aired in Japan from 1993 to 1994 and was followed by a 10-part original animation video. Justy Ueki Tylor bridges two Japanese traditions: he begins as a common anime type, the endearing dolt, but develops into the drunken, wise fool of Zen parables. As war erupts between Earth and the Raalgon Empire, Tyler enlists in the United Planets Space Force because he wants "an easy life." Through sheer dumb luck, he resolves a hostage crisis involving a venerable admiral and wins a promotion to captain of the Soyokaze, a broken-down battle cruiser manned by a crew of misfits. His bumbling successes bring Tylor to the attention of the 16-year-old Raalgon empress Azalyn and her trusted lieutenant, Captain Ru Baruba Dom: he wins the heart of the former and the respect of the latter, along with the affection of his crew. Although Tylor's adventures are played for laughs and clearly aren't intended to be taken seriously, there are some major holes in the plot. The filmmakers introduce questions and subplots, ranging from a scheme to usurp the throne of Raalgon to the fate of the previous captain of the Soyokaze, that are left unresolved when Tylor and his crew blast off for new adventures. Captain Tylor lacks the no-holds-barred nuttiness of Nadesico but will appeal to fans of comic space adventures. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up: sexual humor, minor nudity, violence, alcohol use. --Charles Solomon

Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Collection 3

Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Collection 3 by Kôichi Mashimo from Adv Films

Justy Ueki Tylor's transition from oblivious dim bulb to understated hero nears completion in this third collection of the original television series. When Harumi follows Raalgon commander Shia-Has's orders and infects the crew of the Soyokaze with an engineered virus, Tylor volunteers to become a hostage, rather than risk his friends' lives. It's a noble gesture, but one he wouldn't have thought to make in the first episodes. Although he's technically a prisoner of war aboard the gargantuan Raalgon flagship, Tylor escapes from his cell and fixes a midnight snack, which enables him to befriend the 16-year-old Empress Azalyn before she discovers who he is (and vice versa). Defying her evil minister Wang, Azalyn declares she'll keep Tylor alive--as a pet. Meanwhile the United Planets Space Force admirals are holding the crew of the Soyokaze in quarantine and plotting their demise. Yuriko, Harumi, and Yamamoto engineer a daring escape and set out to rescue the captain--a plan that leaves them caught between the warships of the Raalgon Empire and the UPSF. The Captain Tylor who infuriated his crew at the beginning of the series is now their beloved role model, and, like Akito in Nadesico, he's become the boy every girl in the crew has a crush on--a very unusual metamorphosis. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up: sexual humor, minor nudity, violence, alcohol use. --Charles Solomon

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor - OVA Collection 3 - From Here to Eternity

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor - OVA Collection 3 - From Here to Eternity from Adv Films

This is the third in a set of made-for-videotape (OVA) releases made shortly after the "Irresponsible Captain Tylor" TV series concluded production, and is sometimes known by fans as "Tylor's War". They deal with events that occur about six months after the conclusion of the Raalgon war. Some time has elapsed since Tylor and the Soyokaze lead the UPSF forces to victory. The Raalgon war has cooled to a point where it can probably no longer considered to be one: in fact, many of the Soyokaze crew had been temporarily reassigned. Even Azalyn had taken time away from her duties as Empress. Although generally placid, some areas of the galaxy are certainly not: the Raalgon cabinet is in turmoil (at Wang's urging) and some odd things are happening on the frontier. There are the reports of ships being destroyed (including Yamamoto's first command) under questionable circumstances. It also seems to some that the UPSF is being pushed towards full scale war with the Raalgon Empire, but why would this be ... and who's doing the pushing? While there are people who don't believe what they're told, they're probably too few and too late. Unlike last time, the UPSF is fully prepared to take the offensive and has the weapons to win. The Raalgon empire understands this perfectly and is preparing to defend itself. It seems certain that what ended last time in a brilliant compromise will end this time with billions of people dead. If there's a solution to this it won 't come from Tylor, but perhaps from someone who has learned Tylor's lesson. It's likely that no one can solve this before the carnage starts though, and even if they did that no one would listen. As the Tylor series comes to an end with this volume, things are looking very grim! Still, if there's anyone who can save the day...
