      Lost Universe - Thinpak Collection

Lost Universe - Thinpak Collection from Right Stuf

The broadcast series Lost Universe (1998) begins as a slapstick sci-fi comedy about a mismatched trio of adventurers. Trouble Contractor Kain Blueriver always wears a blue cape and fights with a sword powered by psychic energy. Green-haired Canal is the holographic embodiment of the control system of Kain's ship, the Swordbreaker. In their first adventures, Kain and Canal acquire a third companion: Millie, a Jill-of-all-trades, mistress of none, who is determined to be the best in the universe at… something. The quarrelsome trio performs numerous feats of daring-do for hire, but the fees never seem to cover their expenses. The first half of Lost Universe is broadly comic. A crystal Millie finds turns out to be a hi-tech booby trap that reconfigures space and matter: The layout of the Swordbreaker fluctuates wildly, making it impossible to find anything--including the bathroom. But as the series continues, it shifts from a comedy-adventure to a blatant Star Wars clone. Kain is pitted against Nightmare, the maniacal head of a crime syndicate, and his deadly ship, the Nazard. An even greater foe, the mysterious Yami o Makumono ("Spreader of Darkness"), appears to Kain in his dreams, urging him to join the Dark Side, where his psychic powers will reach their fullest expression. The elaborate battles with Nightmare's forces generate little suspense, because it's clear that Kain has to survive to defeat Yami o Makumono and his space fortress, the Dark Star. Why he's the Luke Skywalker of this universe is never explained, but he's more entertaining as a goofy Trouble Contractor than as a Mark Hamill substitute. (Rated 13 and older: minor risqué humor, alcohol use, grotesque imagery, violence) --Charles Solomon

        LOST UNIVERSE DVD THINPAK COLLECTION

The series' first-ever DVD collection also marks the first time the 26-episode Lost Universe saga will be available to North American fans with unedited (and remastered) video. This collection will also include two new subtitle tracks (standard and on-screen translations), plus the previously released Japanese audio and English-language dub. Lost Universe shares a creative team with the popular Slayers anime series: Both anime properties were based upon novels by Hajime Kanzaka (Slayers), directed by Takashi Watanabe (Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers Try, Shakugan No Shana) and feature character designs by Naomi Miyata (Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers Try). Additionally, the series was recognized with the "Best Individual Episode" award by the Japanese magazine Animage following its initial TV Tokyo broadcast. About LOST UNIVERSE: Millie Nocturne has one great goal in life: to be the best in the universe... at absolutely everything! But when she tries her hand at being the "best detective," she ends up an unwilling partner with two people who will change her life forever - Kain Blueriver, the psi-blade-wielding master of the starship Swordbreaker, and Canal, the smart-mouthed holographic image of the ship's computer! Join this unlikely trio on their adventures as they hurtle through space, facing off against intergalactic crime lords, rogue starships, hijackers dressed as chickens... and that's just the tip of the asteroid! Lost Universe - In Space ... It's Very, Very Dark (Vol 1)

Lost Universe - In Space ... It's Very, Very Dark (Vol 1) from Adv Films

Kain Blueriver, the hero of this sci-fi comedy, is a Trouble Contractor: he handles cases too difficult and/or dangerous for the Universal Guardians. He always wears a blue cape--even with Gundam-type robot armor--and fights with a psi blade, a weapon similar to the light-sabres in "Star Wars," powered by psychic energy. His partner in adventure is the energetic, green-haired Canal, the holographic embodiment of the control system of his ship, the Swordbreaker. In their first adventures, Kain and Canal acquire a third companion: Millie, a Jill-of-all-trades, mistress of none, who is determined to be the best in the universe... at something. Although she's a crack shot, Millie is a typical, fussy anime heroine who complains and blames everyone and everything for her repeated failures. The Swordbreaker is a "Lost Ship," a relic of the superior technology of a vanished civilization that can defy the laws of physics, motion, inertia, etc. Kain inherited it from his grandmother, whose wisdom he constantly invokes.

This quarrelsome trio retrieves stolen property, rescues runaway ships, and protects sensitive witnesses, squabbling and bickering all the way. The result is not so much a comedy-adventure as a farce-adventure.

Unrated; suitable for ages 10 and up; minor sexual innuendos and some rather tame violence. --Charles Solomon

Lost Universe - The Ultimate Fowl! (Vol 2)

Lost Universe - The Ultimate Fowl! (Vol 2) from Adv Films

Trouble Contractor Kain Blueriver and his companions Canal and Millie (the best fill-in-the-blank in the universe) bicker their way across the cosmos on their second disc of comic misadventures. Although they perform numerous feats of derring-do for hire, their fees never seem to cover their expenses.

In "Fallen Angels," a loudly protesting Kain goes (in drag) aboard a training ship for student nurses. Pre-exam tensions have produced a mysterious series of attacks, including a very funny spoof of the shower scene from "Psycho."

Canal is the holographic realization of the computer system of Kain's ship, the Swordbreaker, and the chess-themed mystery "Knight Checks" offers some intriguing hints about the past that shaped her bouncy personality. Who was the mysterious Alice?

Outwitting the Nightmare Crime Syndicate in "Knight Checks" to retrieve a minor piece of information wins Kain a very powerful enemy--in addition to Roy Glen, who tries to steal the Swordbreaker in "Flames Roar" and the whip-bearing Kali from the previous disk. But as long as he has his trademark cape and psi-blade, Kain remains confident he can handle anything the galaxy throws at him--except for the endless quarrels between Millie and Canal.

Unrated; suitable for ages 10 and up; minor sexual innuendoes and some rather tame violence. --Charles Solomon

Lost Universe - It's his Duty to Kick Some Booty (Vol 6)

Lost Universe - It's his Duty to Kick Some Booty (Vol 6) from Adv Films

The confrontations and revelations pile up as Lost Universe reaches its finale. Several of the last episodes feel padded, as Kain Blueriver and his Lost Ship the Swordbreaker battle Kali and other secondary villains. Despite a plethora of computer effects, there's little suspense in these fights, because it's clear that Kain and the Swordbreaker have to survive to take on the icily murderous "Yami o Makumono" ("Spreader of Darkness") and his space fortress, the Dark Star. Kali blowing up the planet Carmel is copied a little too closely from Darth Vader destroying Alderan in Star Wars to play effectively. Not surprisingly, the final battle requires Kain, Millie, Canal, and Rail to work together to defeat the Spreader of Darkness and Nightmare's vast machinery. Kain somehow finds the courage to face his adversary, declaring that he fights not out of hatred or anger, but to defend the people he loves. Even as he battles the foe who caused his grandmother's death, Kain remains a mystery. Why he's the Luke Skywalker of this universe is never explained, but he's more entertaining in the early episodes as a somewhat goofy Trouble Contractor than as a Mark Hamill substitute. Contains these episodes: 22. "Destiny Spins," 23. "Ashura Comes," 24. "The Maiden Returns," 25. "Angelic Demon Strikes," 26. "And Then a Blade of Light Shines." Unrated; suitable for ages 10 and up; grotesque imagery and violence. --Charles Solomon

Lost Universe - Psyche Up! Freak Out! (Vol 4)

Lost Universe - Psyche Up! Freak Out! (Vol 4) from Adv Films

"Reminiscence Whirlpools" and "Fear Whispers" focus on Trouble Contractor Kain's hidden childhood. When he revisits his home planet, Millie meets the retired space pirate who loved Kain's grandmother--and helped raise him after her death. Kain's wistful return is interrupted by the appearance of the icy blond villain who killed his grandmother 10 years earlier. His mere presence reduces the usually happy-go-lucky Kain to gibbering terror. Kain gets a lesson in exorcising personal demons from his old mentor Atlas McMahon, who was traumatized in a failed attempt to retrieve valuable chemicals from a planetwide industrial waste dump three years earlier. Atlas and Kain complete their aborted mission, achieving closure. Roy Glen attempts to use experimental matter-transmission technology to destroy the Swordbreaker in "Nightmare Appears." Canal foils his plan while Millie and Kain battle the whip-wielding Kali. After three hard-hitting episodes, director Takashi Watanabe gives viewers a breather in the fourth. Millie leaves the Swordbreaker in a huff and tries to return to her old haunts, only to realize she belongs with Kain and Canal aboard the ship. The Swordbreaker is a long way from Kansas, but Millie, like Dorothy, learns that there's no place like home. Unrated; suitable for ages 10 and up for alcohol use and some violence. --Charles Solomon

Lost Universe - Union of Evil (Vol 5)

Lost Universe - Union of Evil (Vol 5) from Adv Films

As Lost Universe approaches its climax, the series shifts from a picaresque comedy-adventure about a happy-go-lucky trio of characters to a blatant Star Wars clone. Trouble Contractor Kain Blueriver finds himself at the center of Nightmare's efforts to conquer the galaxy. (Although Lord Stargazer, the head of Nightmare, already possesses such vast resources that it's not clear what he stands to gain.) In dreams, Kain is tempted by the mysterious blond known only as "Yami o Makumono" ("Spreader of Darkness") to come over to the Dark Side, where his psychic powers will reach their fullest expression. Kain resists but is traumatized. Rail Claymore, his old friend in the Universal Guardians, seems to be playing both ends against the middle, as he steals a newly discovered Lost Ship. Nina, Rail's addled, adoring assistant, joins forces with Millie. There are numerous battles involving the Swordbreaker, the Lost Ships of Nightmare, and ordinary battleships, which seem as disposable as tiddlywinks. Despite the myriad explosions and computer-animated ships swooping through space, the pace of the story often drags. The drawn-out nightmare sequences never tell the viewer why Kain is so important in this galactic struggle between good and evil. Contains these episodes: 17. "Universal Guardians Explode," 18. "The Scoundrel Is Swept Away," 19. "Darkness Lures," 20. "Nightmare Prevails," 21. "Field of the Burns." Unrated; suitable for ages 10 and up; grotesque imagery and violence. --Charles Solomon
