Martian Successor Nadesico - The Complete Chronicles

Martian Successor Nadesico - The Complete Chronicles by Tatsuo Sato from A.D. Vision

Martian Successor Nadesico (1996) was initially criticized in Japan for making fun of both anime and fan culture, but its unbridled and ultimately good-natured silliness won over critics--and large audiences on both sides of the Pacific. It's 2195 A.D. and the "Jovian Lizards" are attacking Earth. Tired of the inept campaigns of the United Space Force, Nergal Heavy Industries builds a super battleship, the Nadesico, which they staff with top people who have "slight personality problems." Ditsy Captain Yurika nurses a crush on the traumatized Akito--despite his skill as a robot pilot, he signs on as a cook. He's won over by the irrepressible Gai Daigoji, a fanatic admirer of Gekigangar 3, a hilarious spoof of '70s mecha series. The story reaches new heights of absurdity in "Let's Go with Hot-Blooded Anime": the casts of Nadesico and Gekigangar watch each other's programs, borrowing ideas and complaining about the plots.

In another episode, the crew holds a "Geki Fest" that satirizes anime conventions, including booths selling special, "limited edition" merchandise. The war becomes a struggle that pits the crew of the Nadesico against both the Jovians and Nergal Industries. Although the conflict hinges on Akito's mysterious ability to move through space and time in a "boson jump," the path to peace lies in Gekigangar 3 ("the thread that ties humanity together!"). In America, only Rocky and Bullwinkle and The Simpsons have dared such outrageous self-parody. (Rated for ages 12 and older: Brief nudity, mildly risqué humor, cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Martian Successor Nadesico - The Motion Picture: Prince of Darkness

Martian Successor Nadesico - The Motion Picture: Prince of Darkness by Tatsuo Sato from Adv Films

Although it was initially criticized for spoofing mecha sci-fi adventures and fan culture, Martian Successor Nadesico (1996) became an international hit. Unfortunately, the theatrical film offers little of the original's irreverent humor. Two years after the broadcast series, Yurika and Akito are missing and presumed dead; Ruri now commands the Nadesico B. Ruri was always the beleaguered voice of common sense, noting, "I guess we'll be fumbling about, making noise `til the end. However, when you think about it, that's rather appropriate for us." The new Ruri asks dumb questions: "Are you a good guy or a bad guy?" Fry cook turned mecha pilot Akito appears as a masked, Keanu Reeves-esque figure. ("That was then. This is now.") Fragmented and difficult to follow, Prince of Darkness is a dreary coda to a wonderfully funny series. Where's Gekiganger 3 when we need him? (Rated 15 and older: profanity, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon

Martian Successor Nadesico - Paradigm Shifts (Vol. 4)

Martian Successor Nadesico - Paradigm Shifts (Vol. 4) by Tatsuo Sato from Adv Films

Revelations, threats, and decisions pile up as this rollicking sci-fi adventure comedy continues. The Nadesico is to be commandeered by the United Earth Forces and Akito, the reluctant hero of the series, relieved of his duties. Both Nergal Heavy Industries and the military are very interested in Akito, as he seems to have demonstrated an ability to teleport between planets using the blue Chulip Crystals found on Mars. Typically, he doesn't remember how--or if--he teleported from Mars; he only recalls waking up on Earth. Meanwhile, Yurika refuses to give up her one-sided romance with Akito and cheerfully defies the ambitious Erina Won. Megumi and Minato make an astonishing discovery about the identity of the "Jovian Lizards" who are at war with Earth: the pilot's capsule in the captured Jovian mobile suit contains toys from the spoof '70s mecha series "Gekigangar III"! Director Tatsuo Sato takes the story to new heights of absurdity in "Let's Go with Hot-Blooded Anime": the casts of Nadesico and "Gekigangar" watch each other's programs, borrowing ideas for weapons and complaining about the plots. Among American TV cartoons, only Rocky and Bullwinkle and The Simpsons dared this kind of outrageous self-parody. Unrated; suitable for ages 10 and up for minor sexual innuendoes and violence, largely restricted to robot versus robot. --Charles Solomon

Martian Successor Nadesico - Endgame (Vol. 6)

Martian Successor Nadesico - Endgame (Vol. 6) by Tatsuo Sato from Adv Films

As this rollicking sci-fi comedy concludes, computer officer Ruri sighs, "I guess we'll be fumbling about, making noise til the end. However, when you think about it, that's rather appropriate for us." The last five episodes offer a lot of action, from mutiny to murder. A three-way struggle that pits the crew of the Nadesico against both the Jovians and Nergal Industries hinges on Akito's mysterious ability to move through space and time in a "boson jump." The action is played against typically outrageous comedy: the solution to the war between Earth and the Jovian Lizards lies in the imaginary mecha series "Gekigangar 3" ("the thread ties humanity together!"). The crew holds a "Geki Fest" that satirizes anime conventions, including booths selling special, limited-edition merchandise. When the Nadesico is impounded, Megumi gets a job as a voice actress on "Natural Princess Magical Lychee," an uproarious spoof of Sailor Moon. (Nadesico was initially criticized in Japan for making fun of both anime and fan culture, but its good-natured humor won over critics--and large audiences.) Many questions about the plot are left unanswered at the conclusion; Ruri suggests that some of them will be sorted out "in the inevitable sequel." Alas, no more episodes of Nadesico were produced. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up: brief nudity, mildly risqué humor, and cartoon violence. --Charles Solomon

Martian Successor Nadesico - Invasion (Vol. 1)

Martian Successor Nadesico - Invasion (Vol. 1) by Tatsuo Sato from Adv Films

The unbridled silliness of Nadesico provides a welcome counter to the grimly serious tone of many mecha series. It's A.D. 2195 and the "Jovian Lizards" are attacking Earth after capturing Mars and the Moon. Tired of the inept campaigns of the United Space Force, Nergal Heavy Industries builds a super battleship, the Nadesico. They staff the ship with an assortment of oddballs and misfits under Captain Yurika, a flaky young woman. Yurika nurses a crush on Akita Tenkawa, who was traumatized when he saw the Jovians slaughter innocent civilians on Mars. Despite his skill as a robot pilot, he wants nothing to do with heroics--he signs on to the Nadesico as a fry cook. He's won over by the irrepressible Gai Daigoji, who's a fanatic admirer of the old Gekigangar III series--a very funny spoof of '70s mecha programs. Gai soon has Akita fighting the Jovians in the best anime tradition. The vocal performances tend to be over the top, and the manic tone prevents some plot points from carrying the requisite emotional punch. Still, it's easy to see why the freewheeling insanity of Nadesico has made the series and its follow-ups so popular in Japan and the U.S. Contains the first four episodes: 1. "To Go Like a Man," 2. "Leave the Blue Earth to Me," 3. "A Goodbye that Came Too Soon," 4. "Charmed by Aqua Space." Unrated; suitable for ages 10 and up for minor sexual innuendoes and violence, largely restricted to robot versus robot. --Charles Solomon

The aliens have destroyed our base on Mars, wiped out our space fleets, and now, only one ship stands between Earth and total annihilation! Disgusted by the incompetence of Earth's military, the independent arms manufacturer Nergal has built it own space battle cruiser. But due to the shortage of trained soldiers, they've had to assemble the most unorthodox crew to ever launch into orbit. With a cook who's also a pilot and an Admiral's daughter in command, the new starship is the most formidable fighting vehicle ever conceived. But before it can see action against the Jovian invaders, the crew must win their victory against their own species as they fight off a ruthless attempt by Earth's military to seize the Nadesico! Episodes 1-5.
