Neon Genesis Evangelion - Death & Rebirth

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Death & Rebirth by Hideaki Anno from WEA

The bizarre ending of the television series Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) pleased no one, including creator Hideaki Anno. Shortly after it aired, Anno began remaking the final episodes as an OAV and then decided to release them as a theatrical feature. At the climax of the series, Shinji met and destroyed Kaoru, who was both the Fifth Child and 17th Angel--then collapsed into schizophrenia. Death retraces these events through clips, many of them set to new dialogue performed by the same English cast as the series. Rebirth depicts the aftermath of Shinji's victory over the final Angel: Seele attacks NERV headquarters as part of their plot to advance human evolution. The feature ends as inconclusively as the series, with Rei in limbo beside Dr. Ikari, the traumatized Shinji nearly catatonic, and a reawakened Asuka fighting Seele. It sets up the final film, The End of Evangelion. Unrated; suitable for ages 14 and up: Violence, brief nudity, profanity. --Charles Solomon

Fifteen years after the Antarctic blast known as the Second Impact, the world once again faces the threat of the Angels--super-powered entities with the capacity to bring about a Third Impact capable of destroying all human life. Summoned by his estranged father, 14-year-old Shinji Ikari reluctantly embraces his destiny as the pilot of the bio-engineered vessel known as "Evangelion Unit-01." Alongside fellow Eva pilots Asuka Langley and Rei Ayunami, Shinji battles against the host of invading Angels. But all is not as it seems. Amidst layers of subterfuge, and the competing agendas of secret government organizations each seeking to manipulate the children and their Evas for their own ends, Shinji, Rei and Asuka must each come to terms with their past and unearth their own identities. Told from the various perspectives of the tale's primary characters, Death & Rebirth is a composition of epic proportions. The first half of the film is an orchestrated retelling of episodes 1 through 24 of the original groundbreaking Neon Genesis Evangelion saga. Supplemented with startling new animated sequences, Death offers a unique insight into the personal worlds of the characters as conceived of by the series' director Hideki Anno. In Rebirth, the second half of the film, we see an alternate vision of episode 25 of the original series. Seele, the secret international organization behind the development of both the Evangelion project and the Human Complementation project, is concerned about the way the projects' director, Ikari Gendo, is proceeding. Convinced that Gendo is implementing his own plans, they set out to wrest control of the projects and capture Eva Unit-01. Using the nine-production model Evangelions under their command, and a force of conventional troops, Seele undertakes a full-scale invasion of Central Dogma - the operation control center beneath Tokyo-3.
From the animators of GAINAX Studios (The Wings of Honneamise) and Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell, Blood: The Last Vampire) comes the most decisive chapter in the Neon Genesis Evangelion saga. Featuring groundbreaking animated action sequences and mind-blowing dramatic revelations; Death & Rebirth is truly a composition of epic proportions. Manga's most technically advanced DVD to date includes a double-sided DVD, special audio commentary and an exclusive Mokuji Interactive feature (Mokuji = "Contents"). Once activated, this feature will allow the viewer to select from an on-screen, chapter specific index of Eva-related terms, character descriptions, and other valuable information while viewing the film. The perfect resource for the seasoned Evangelion fan eager to learn more as well as a comprehensive introduction for those new to the story. All key roles in the English language version of Death and Rebirth are reprised by the original voice-actors from the Neon Genesis Evangelion series.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Perfect Collection

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Perfect Collection by Kazuya Tsurumaki from Adv Films

A benchmark series in the history of anime, Hideaki Anno's Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most widely discussed in anime. It's not the first series to combine mecha (futuristic machines, especially robots) with theology and a character-driven story, but it does so exceptionally well. The designs of the robots by Ikuto Yamashita are strikingly original; the questions raised about the future of the human race stimulate viewers' imaginations and the characters show a depth of personality rare in anime. The story is set in 2015, 15 years after a cataclysmic explosion in Antarctica that caused the ice cap to melt, killing a large portion of the Earth's population. Although it was reported as a meteor impact, the explosion was caused by human interaction with Adam, the first of a series of powerful, sentient creatures known as "Angels" to appear on Earth. To defend against their depredations, humans rely on NERV, a secret agency dedicated to destroying the Angels with their gargantuan robot suits called Evas. Only teenagers with special psychic powers can pilot the Evas, and the best pilot is the repressed 14-year-old Shinji Ikari, who is a more interesting, believable character than standard mecha pilots. The two final chapters of the Evangelion series (which originally ran in 1995-96) are highly philosophical ruminations that satisfied neither Anno nor the viewers. The episodes were remade as the theatrical features; however, only the original 26 episodes appear in this set. Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up: Brief nudity, violence, sexual humor, and complex adult themes. --Charles Solomon

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum Collection 1

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum Collection 1 by Kazuya Tsurumaki from Adv Films

One of the most popular anime series of all time, Neon Genesis Evangelion offers interesting characters, sophisticated direction, and solid storytelling. A giant meteor struck Antarctica in 2000, devastating much of the Earth. Since then, humans and the mysterious aliens known as Angels have been locked in a deadly struggle. In 2015, scientists at the NERV Center in the fortress-city of Tokyo 3 are developing ways to combat the Angels, notably the Human Enhancement Project and the giant battle robots called Evangelions. Fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari, whose aloof father heads these research projects, is drafted to pilot Evangelion Unit 01. Shinji is a reluctant hero, as many mecha pilots are, but his reluctance is not just an arbitrary whim; it's rooted in his estrangement from his father. Shy and socially maladroit, Shinji displays a likable warmth the grimly taciturn teenagers in ordinary mecha shows lack. Rounding out the cast are Rei Ayanami, the silent, albino pilot of Unit 00; irrepressible Misato Katsuragi, who serves as a substitute mother to Shinji; technical expert Ritsuko Akagi; and Shinji's classmates Toji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida. Evangelion offers a dark vision of the future, but director Hideaki Anno presents it very skillfully. Episodes include: 1. "Angel Attack," 2. "Unfamiliar Ceiling," 3. "The Phone That Never Rings," 4. "Rain, Escape & Afterwards." Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up: robot vs. robot violence, brief nudity, and minor profanity. --Charles Solomon

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum: 01 is the first release of seven DVD volumes, which over the course of 26 episodes will include new cast and crew commentary, four bonus Directors' Cut episodes and seven animatics (moving storyboards). Each volume also includes a limited edition collector's slipcover in an exclusive metallic finish, limited to the first pressings only, and a one-of-a-kind numbered NERV parking decal (image below). The first pressing will also include profile booklets filled with screen shoots, Japanese commentaries and character profiles. The year is 2015, and half of the Earth's population is dead, victims of the disaster called Second Impact! Answering a summons from his enigmatic father, 14-year-old Shinji Ikari arrives in the rebuilt city of New Tokyo-3 just as a gigantic creature identified as an "Angel" attacks! Forced into the cockpit of a giant bio-mechanical construct known as an Evangelion, Shinji must defend the city from the rampaging Angel or die trying! The future is back like you've never seen it before, in Neon Genesis Evangelion: Platinum edition!

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum Collection 3

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum Collection 3 by Kazuya Tsurumaki from Adv Films

After destroying the spidery Ninth Angel, Shinji is shocked to receive a word of praise from his emotionally remote father. An extended flashback reveals how Misato's ineffectual father rescued her from the destruction caused by the Second Impact; Ritsuko confides to Misato that she never got along with her mother, the creator of the all-powerful trio of computers known as the Magi. Ten years after the release of Evangelion in America, the engineers at AD Vision remastered the audio tracks in 5.1 surround sound for the "Platinum" edition. Although some spectacular explosions occur in the battles with the Ninth and Tenth Angels, the remix is often most effective in quiet moments. When Misato steps out into the rain, the sound of the falling water envelopes the room. Shinji, Rei and Asuka are caught away from the base during a power outage and have to travel through ventilation ducts to NERV headquarters: the listener can follow their progress through metal tubes. As the extras, which include a discussion of the changes in sound technology, are the only new footage, the "Platinum" discs are really for viewers who've installed a 5.1 system, but who don't already have Anno's watershed series. Neon Genesis Evangelion, Collection 0:6 (Episodes 18-20)

Neon Genesis Evangelion, Collection 0:6 (Episodes 18-20) by Tsuyoshi Kaga from Adv Films

The new Eva Unit 03, piloted by Shinji's friend Toji, mutates during its initial test and becomes an Angel. When Shinji realizes another human being is inside the menace, he refuses to attack it. Using an override circuit, Shinji's father takes control of his Eva and rips the 03 apart. Horrified and disgusted at this brutality, Shinji quits as an Eva pilot--until a new and more powerful Angel strikes at NERV headquarters. Seeing his friends Asuka and Rei overcome, Shinji returns to defeat the deadly new foe. But his Eva goes berserk, attacking and devouring the Angel. As it grows in power, the Eva partially absorbs its pilot. Drifting through semiconsciousness, Shinji confronts memories that recur in variations, like an aria by Philip Glass. Characters in other, popular mecha series never confront these moral dilemmas. The youthful pilots in Gundam Wing adhere to a warrior code that extols heroism; they have few qualms about slaughtering their foes. Shinji knows that warfare is not a noble calling, and that causing the death of a human being is a horrifying prospect. His ambivalence about his role as a pilot forces him to analyze his troubled relationship with his remote and brutal father and how that relationship has warped his self-perception. Episodes: 18. "The Judgment of Life," 19. "A Man's Fight," 20. "Form of the Mind, Form of the Man." Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up for robot versus robot violence, nudity, minor profanity, and sexual situations. --Charles Solomon

Neon Genesis Evangelion, Collection 0:8 (Episodes 24-26)

Neon Genesis Evangelion, Collection 0:8 (Episodes 24-26) by Tsuyoshi Kaga from Adv Films

The final episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion have been the subject of widespread and often heated debate since the series debuted in Japan in 1995. Shinji is no surer of himself at the end of the 26th episode than he was at the beginning of the 1st; his victories as an Eva pilot have only intensified his doubts and fears. As he broods on his lonely fate, he meets the mysterious Fifth Child, Kaoru Nagisa, the only character who treats him with genuine kindness. The battle with the 17th and final Angel assures the continued existence of humanity but devastates Shinji. As he attempts to grasp what has occurred, his identity shatters. Everyone he has known appears to question and torment him in long sequences of animated schizophrenia. The collapse of Shinji's ego recalls the chilling conclusion of Yukio Mishima's "Sea of Fertility" tetralogy, when the main character realizes he can no longer be certain of his own existence. Buddhist theology, Western existentialism, and apocalyptic Christianity fuse into a bleak vision of a universe in which there are no answers, in this life or any other. Anno created the series after four years of deep depression, and his logical yet frustrating conclusion to Shinji's odyssey gives Evangelion a fascination that has made it a landmark in the history of Japanese animation. Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up: brief nudity, violence, sexual humor, and complex adult themes. --Charles Solomon

In the deadly calm of the aftermath, the sudden and unexpected arrival of the Fifth Child hits like a hurricane, leaving Shinji at the eye of a whirlwind of activity as he finds a kindred soul in the unearthly Nagisa Kaoru^E but does Kaoru really have a soul at all? Prepare for the shocking conclusion to the most controversial animated series ever produced. Where Angels fear to tread, Shinji must go alone. At last, the circle of life will be completed. He is The Beast That Shouted I at the Heart of the World. It is Final Genesis.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum Collection 7

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum Collection 7 by Kazuya Tsurumaki from Adv Films

In "The Birth of NERV," the filmmakers offer the viewer glimpses of the main characters' childhoods in scenes that hint at the sources of their problems and sorrows. And the penultimate episodes are dominated by sorrows at NERV, the organization that handles the Earth's defenses against the invading Angels. Asuka has grown so hostile, she can no longer bond with her Eva. After being badly injured in battle with the 15th Angel, she's removed from the program she lived for. As Commander Ikari insists on keeping Shinji's Eva in "cryostasis," Rei is left to face the serpentine 16th Angel alone: rather than be overcome by it, she destroys her Eva, the Angel, much of the surrounding landscape--and herself. Shinji is shattered by her disappearance. After decoding a message from the murdered Kaji, Misato forces Ritsuko to reveal to her and to Shinji the hideous truth about the creation of the Evas. But Misato, Shinji, and Ritsuko are only pawns in the larger game being played by the ruling cadre of the sinister SEELE organization. The 16th Angel has been vanquished and, according to the predictions they have derived from the Dead Sea Scrolls, only one remains to appear. These fragmented episodes showcase the singular mixture of Christian symbolism, sci-fi action, and Eastern mysticism that has made Evangelion one of the most widely--and hotly--discussed series in the history of anime. Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up: robot versus robot violence, minor nudity, and grotesque imagery. --Charles Solomon
