Slayers Next - The Complete Second Season
from Funimation Prod
The second season of the knockabout fantasy Slayers continues the wacky misadventures of red-haired arch-sorceress Lina Inverse. As she wanders in search of the ancient book of spells the Claire Bible, she's accompanied by her usual friends: dumb blond swordsman Gourry; Zelgadis, the once-human chimera; and Amelia, the single-minded champion of justice. The zany quartet is joined by Martina, who fancies herself something of a rival to Lina, and by the mysterious and powerful priest Xellos. The plot rambles and stumbles along, with Lina and her friends following false clues, falling into slapstick disasters, and eating everything in sight. A more serious storyline gradually emerges that involves enmities left over from the War of the Monsters' Fall, one thousand years earlier. It climaxes in a take-no-prisoners battle that requires Lina to summon the spirit of primordial chaos. The filmmakers make the battle a bit too big. Lina Inverse isn't a complete idiot, like Excel in Excel Saga: she possesses formidable powers. But she's essentially a comic character who blows up things by mistake, overeats, and squabbles with her friends: Amelia calls her "chaos and destruction's poster girl." She's not the person most audiences would want guarding the world from annihilation. But the overblown finale probably won't bother the many fans of Slayers, who kept the characters going for three broadcast seasons, six OVAs, and five features. The third and final season of the slapstick fantasy Slayers comprises one continuous adventure, although the complicated storyline stumbles and falters, not unlike its heroine, red-haired sorceress Lina Inverse. In addition to her usual friends--dim, blond swordsman Gourry; chimera Zelgadis; and Amelia, the advocate of justice--Lina is joined by Filia, a golden dragon who looks like a human. Filia recruits Lina because she believes the sorceress is the figure in an ancient prophecy who can prevent the destruction of the world. The improbable quintet must keep a demon-lord from entering their dimension by gathering five ancient weapons, one of which is Gourry's Sword of Light. The plot halts about halfway through season, while the characters get involved in send-ups of "Alice in Wonderland" and "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers." During the latter misadventure, Gourry comments with rare perception, "We're just getting further and further from the main plot, aren't we?" The rambling script allows for the requisite gags, enormous meals, powerful spells, and temper tantrums as characters appear, disappear, and reappear. Entrusting Lina and her pals with magical super-weapons feels a bit like giving Excalibur to the Three Stooges: the Supreme Elder of the Golden Dragons frets, "I still don't know if we should be entrusting the fate of the world to you people." But fans ofSlayersknow that Lina Inverse always comes through in the end, which is why the character appeared insix OVA's, and five features.(Rated TV PG: violence, risqué humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

This very silly feature centers on sorceress Lina Inverse and her greatest and closest rival, Nahga the Serpent, who use their magical powers to zap anyone who annoys them. Two discount tickets take the heroines to the mist-shrouded Island of Mipross, where they take on a mysterious jellyfish cult, a sinister hypnotist, and a pickpocket.
Lina's dreams lead her into the conflict between the ancient sage, Rowdy, and the demon Joyrock, who has one of the most grating laughs in recent anime. The battle escalates into a weird war that unsuccessfully blends slapstick comedy with grisly images that recall Night of the Living Dead. The plot grows even more convoluted when Lina travels back in time to battle Joyrock before he destroyed an elfin village and absorbed their power. The outcome of their struggle changes the future and the present.
Her hot temper and inordinate love of food mark Lina as a typical anime outrageous girl, although she serves as the butt of a lot of jokes about her height and "amazingly small breasts." The rather dim, overly endowed Nahga runs around in minuscule leather outfits borrowed from Boris Vallejo paintings. It's all extremely silly--and certainly not PC. These four discs constitute the first broadcast season of the well-liked Dungeons and Dragons-style farce The Slayers. Red-haired Lina Inverse has a typical anime heroine's hot temper and insatiable appetite for food but also a rare talent for swordplay and casting powerful spells. As she roams from town to town, she acquires a cadre of able but quarrelsome companions: Gourry, a big, blond, dumb knight; Zelgadis, a once-human chimera who practices shamanic magic; sorceress-in-training Amelia, who makes Gourry look bright and Lina appear graceful; and the shrine maiden Sylphiel. Together they make short work of the hordes of bandits, golems, werewolves, trolls, mercenaries, and evil spirits their enemies send after them. They also have to face some more formidable foes, including the wizard Vrumugun, ace swordsman Zangulus, and archsorceress Eris. But the greatest threats come from the exceedingly powerful Rezo the Red Priest and the Dark Lord, Shabranigdo. All Lina's adventures involve a lot of slapstick humor, but these episodes have a more carefree tone than the later feature and the OAVs that paired her with the overendowed Naga. The convoluted plot lurches and stumbles along, much the way Lina fumbles around after getting clobbered. Although the fate of the world is supposed to hang on the outcome of these adventures, the broad comedy prevents the various episode directors from creating much suspense or a sense of menace. The Slayers is featherweight entertainment, but one that has won many fans in both Japan and the United States. Some viewers may object to the jokes about a mincing gay dragon, Lina losing her power at "that time of the month," and the many wisecracks about her being flat-chested. Japanese filmmakers and audiences clearly have different standards of what qualifies as PC humor. "Suggested 13 Up" for violence, profanity, brief nudity, and sexual humor. --Charles Solomon
