Seina Yamada, the hero of the adventure-farce Tenchi Muyo GXP (2002), is a one-man destruction derby. When he walks by, cell phones disconnect and machinery breaks down. A succession of misunderstandings sends Seina to the Galaxy Police Academy, where Mihoshi and Kiyoni trained in the Tenchi adventures. Seina says he knows Tenchi Masaki and visits the planet Jurai, but none of the main characters from the original continuity appear. Nor do the filmmakers recapture the mixture of romantic comedy, slapstick high jinks, and sci-fi adventure that make Tenchi so popular. GXP is an unremarkable fan-service comedy that's closer in tone to Steel Angel Kurumi than Tenchi Universe. Voluptuous women chase 15-year-old Seina, although what they see in him isn't clear. Resident babes Kiriko, Amane, and Erma--who are also his teachers--pursue him, leading to a spate of cleavage shots, panty shots, bath scenes, massages, come-ons, and nose bleeds. Like the original Tenchi, Seina turns out to be a long-lost Prince of Jurai: He summons a variation on the magical Lighthawk Wings while piloting a billion-year-old mecha he finds on the planet Wau. Tenchi Muyo GXP will appeal to devotees of fan-service jiggle comedies, but viewers expecting a continuation of the long-running Tenchi franchise will be disappointed. The broadcast series Tenchi Universe (1995) remains the silliest and, probably, the funniest entry in the popular Tenchi Muyo! ("No Need for Tenchi!") franchise. Tenchi Masaki seems like a normal high school kid, living near the family shrine in Okayama. But any semblance of normalcy is shattered by the arrival of the outrageous space pirate Ryoko, followed by bubble-brained Galactic Police Officer Mihoshi. They're joined by Princess Ayeka of the planet Jurai and her sister Sasami; Mihoshi's long-suffering partner, Kiyoni; and batty super-genius Wasshu. Life is soon "like a carnival," as Tenchi says in a rare understatement. Tenchi's grandfather turns out to be the long-lost crown prince of Jurai. When Kagato seizes the throne, Tenchi must defeat him in a dramatic confrontation between good and evil. Before the battle, the plot careens along merrily, pausing for a trans-galactic beauty pageant and a harvest festival that's engulfed in a sea of pink goo when Mihoshi tries to operate a cotton-candy machine. At the end of the adventure, Tenchi sighs for the days when "life was like a carnival," but the peace that reigns in Okayama won't last. The Tenchi series established the anime genre of the harem comedy--all six women from outer space are after Tenchi. Many other series have followed the formula, but few, if any, have been as much fun. The new slim pack takes up about one-fourth the shelf space of the original eight discs. Although the title means something along the lines of "no need for Tenchi," everyone wants the hapless hero of this popular series. These 13 OAV episodes reunite the cast from the TV show, but with some changes. Sasami is initially much younger and less domestic; grandfather Masaki turns out to be Yosho, the long-lost Jurai prince who was betrothed to Ayeka centuries ago; genius-in-residence Wasshu reveals an unexpected bond with interstellar outlaw Ryoko. The tone is a little racier than the broadcast version: Ryoko runs around naked and the attempts to seduce the terminally klutzy Tenchi are more pointed.
In the first adventure (episodes 1-7), Tenchi inadvertently wakes a mummified demon who was imprisoned at the Masaki family shrine 700 years ago--none other than space pirate extraordinaire Ryoko. The problems she causes are dwarfed by the arrival of Jurai princesses Ayeka and Sasami, bubble-brained Galactic Police Agent Miyoshi--and interstellar criminal Kagato. Assuming the role (and costume) of the Crown Prince of Jurai, Tenchi defeats the evil Kagato with a magic sword that resembles the lightsabers in Star Wars.
Unexpected arrivals keep the Masaki household in chaos in the later, shorter adventures (episodes 8-13), including a baby cousin of Tenchi's, a shape-shifting robot who impersonates Ryoko, and the Emperor and Empress of Jurai. The writers occasionally lose track of the plot, especially in episode 13, "Here Comes Jurai," but Tenchi has never been noted for its logic. In all the episodes, the filmmakers manage to balance interplanetary threats, teenage romance, and broad comedy with their usual aplomb.
The Tenchi Encyclopedia (powered by Wasshu OS) offers short biographies of the main characters with clips and stills, pencil tests, digital comics, Japanese commercials, and full credits for the series. A must-have for Tenchi fans. --Charles Solomon

Jim and his mouse friend Gran toll away working as innkeepers. They dream of sailing far away on their own boat. One day, a mysterious fellow appears at the inn and gives them a map. It's the map to Treasure Island. So they decide to make their own boat, and sail away treasure hunting. But it's not as easy as they think when they run into a group of unsavory pirates led by the dastardly Captain Silver. Silver wants the treasure for himself. And it is up to Jim, Gran, and their new friend Kathy, to beat him to it.
