Barney - Let's Play School
by David Sullivan Proudfoot
from Lyons / Hit Ent.
Like perky Kathie Lee Gifford, Barney, the ubiquitous magical purple dinosaur, can elicit violent hatred and fierce loyalty. You're likely to get the latter from the average toddler, weaned on the inexplicably popular (to some) PBS series. Parents may want to first teach their children the original classic songs before they're invariably introduced to Barney and his lyric-altering renditions. (By now countless children think "This Old Man" is the "Barney I Love You" song.) This 50-minute video, never seen on television, focuses on Baby Bop (Barney's yellow baby dino friend), envious and curious about school. Barney and friends Ashley, Hannah, Robert, and Jeff offer to play school, with Baby Bop as teacher. Their songs include the Barney versions of "The Alphabet Song," "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe," "The Itsy Bitsy Spider," "Where Is Thumbkin?", and more. Let's Play School! offers a gentle introduction to toddlers curious about preschool and may waylay any apprehensions. With its emphasis on how school is both fun and educational it also entices its youngest audience by showing that Ashley, Hannah, Robert, and Jeff (who are about 8 or 9) represent those awe-inspiring older kids. They like school. Therefore, it can't be that bad. And neither is this video's ultimate message. --N.F. Mendoza

Barney - Sing and Dance with Barney
from Lyons / Hit Ent.
Barney the dinosaur and friends present twenty seven of their favorite sing-along songs.
Genre: Children's Video
Rating: NR
Release Date: 9-MAR-2004
Media Type: DVD
For those who can't get enough of those Barney songs, here's a made-for-video show packed full of song and dance. The story line is oh-so thin as Barney and his friends sing 27 songs in only 56 minutes, so Barney is usually singing or introducing a new song. For anyone who has been watching the decade that Barney has been on the airwaves, most of the songs are Barney standards: "Mr. Sun," "The Airplane Song," "Baby Bop Hop," and "I Love You." They are mixed in with all-time favorites "Itsy Bitsy Spider," "A Camping We Will Go," and the like. Many of Barney's original kid friends return looking much older and wiser. No big landmark production here, just a "greatest hits" of Barney tunes that should have fans singing and dancing around the tube for nearly an hour. --Doug Thomas

It seems inevitable: a program of Barney and the kids just singing, without the usual story lines. Barney, B.J., and Baby Bop tackle "Look Through the Window," "Brushing My Teeth," "Marching Song," and "Here, Kitty Kitty." Barney - Now I Know My ABC's
from Lyons / Hit Ent.
Preschool fundamentals--including shapes, colors, and the alphabet--are the focus of this one-hour program set in the after-school learning center familiar to viewers of Barney & Friends. Today, everyone is preparing for an art show, which provides plenty of scope for Barney's gentle tutorials on circles, squares, reds, and blues, while he incorporates beloved songs such as "Mister Sun." Viewers will be inspired by the students' art projects (which are easily replicated at home) as well as the lesson on mixing colors to create new hues. Then it's off to Baby Bop's tea party, a perfect segue into the realm of ABC's. As Baby Bop learns to spell her name, there are plenty of rhyming games and alphabet songs to incite audience participation. While lacking the originality of some of Barney's earlier music videos, there is no denying this lineup of merry songs and feel-good familiarity make this a cozy stroll into Barney's world. Barney, BJ, and Baby Bop invite young viewers to accompany them as they visit the Fort Worth Zoo in this 50-minute, never-televised Barney show. Unlike the typical televised episode, this installment is shot completely on location. Absent is the core group of children who interact with Barney--instead, Barney focuses on BJ, Baby Bop, and his young viewers. BJ attempts to chronicle their journey through the zoo with his camera, Baby Bop embarks on a quest to introduce her stuffed elephant Nellie to a real elephant, and Scooter McNutty tries desperately to locate the squirrel exhibit. Barney provides key information about animals like Mandle monkeys, zebras, and flamingos while posing many questions and challenges that invite viewer interaction. Also included is footage of real children discussing and imitating a variety of animals. Eleven fun songs accompany Barney's expedition including "What Will We See at the Zoo," "Rock Like a Monkey," and "Everybody Needs a Nap." The Fort Worth Zoo proves to be a wonderful setting for this innovative Barney episode and the animal photography is close-up and excellent. (Ages 2 to 6) --Tami Horiuchi
Barney's Rhyme Time Rhythm
from Lyons / Hit Ent.
No matter what a toddler's parent does, Barney is inescapable. No matter how cringingly irritating adults find Barney's goofy voice, he captivates his youthful audience. Barney's Rhyme Time Rhythm is no exception. The video's setting finds a frustrated Emily trying to pen a poem for school. Stepping in to help are the magical purple dinosaur and a host of friends, including Mother Goose herself. The video is an effective introduction to Mother Goose rhymes, songs, and stories (which, mercifully, are not rewritten in typical Barney fashion). As in most Barney fare, there's an emphasis on cheerfulness, creativeness, friendship, and affection. It's nice that the basic premise encourages children to read and write--especially their own rhymes. The many songs include "Did You Ever See a Lassie?" as well as "London Bridge," "Humpty Dumpty," "Baa Baa Black Sheep," "Little Boy Blue," "Little Bo Peep," "The House That Jack Built," "Little Miss Muffet," "Three Little Kittens," "The Old Lady in the Shoe," and "Old King Cole." (Ages 2 and older) --N.F. Mendoza
Barney - Best Manners (Invitation To Fun)
from HIT Entertainment
Learning about etiquette can be fun, especially with the help of Barney and his friend Miss Vera Goode's "Book of Manners for Children." This 48-minute, never-televised program shows young children how to cooperate, share, use the magic words "please and thank you," and generally exemplify good manners. Barney and his five young friends experience the topsy-turvy tea from Alice in Wonderland firsthand, then practice their manners and get dressed up for a celebratory party at Vera Goode's mansion. Song and dance abounds as Barney and his crew discovers that practicing good manners can be unexpectedly fun. Barney features a somewhat improved singing voice in this production thanks to voicing by Dean Wendt and is joined by Vera Goode (voiced by Gretta Muller) in several musical duets.
