Thomas, as anyone familiar with the eponymous, wildly popular TV series knows, is a very useful engine, and never more so than in his first theatrical release, which was a modest box-office success. On a tank filled with little more than pluck, determination, and goodwill, Thomas sets out full steam ahead on a danger-fraught mission to help his friend Mr. Conductor. The conductor's stash of magic gold dust has run out, leaving him stranded on the Island of Sodor with Junior, his flaky cousin, and Lily, a little girl enlisted to lift her grandfather out of a funk on nearby Muffle Mountain. When Thomas bravely chugs beyond his hometown tracks' buffers with Lily aboard, he's transported to Muffle Mountain's secret railway and to Lady, a long-lost steamer whose legendary engine makes her more powerful than Diesel, the train-yard bully. Together, Thomas and Lady lead Diesel on a chase that causes a bridge to collapse, taking the dastardly Diesel down with it. Most impressive about the movie is its marquee names: Alec Baldwin works magic as the dutiful worrywart Mr. Conductor, Mara Wilson is Lily, and Peter Fonda plays the cool-looking but lugubrious Grandpa. It's a cast that'll keep put-upon parents watching, if halfheartedly. Thomas fans 5 and under, meanwhile, will wish the actors wouldn't blow so much hot air; they'll want to see their hero a bigger part in steaming up the story line. --Tammy La Gorce

Thomas the Tank Engine and all his engine friends on the Island of Sodor consistently strive to be very useful engines, but sometimes their desire to do their best inspires a competitive spirit that gets them all into trouble. Thomas is scheduled for an important run transporting the Admiral to the opening of Sodor's Maritime Museum in "Thomas and the Treasure," but when Salty tells Thomas about the lost pirate treasure of Sodor, Thomas can't resist following the clues. Problem is, the other engines laugh at Thomas for believing the story and Thomas' treasure hunting causes him to miss his scheduled pick-up of the Admiral and become an unreliable engine in Sir Topham Hatt's eyes. "Duncan's Bluff," Skarloey the Brave," "Big Strong Henry," and "Seeing the Sights" all deal with rivalry between engines; focusing on various engines' efforts to prove themselves the bravest, fastest, or strongest and the bad things that happen when the engines compete with one another at the expense of working together. Thomas and his English engine buddies face floods, landslides, and taunting trucks in these half dozen 5-minute stories narrated by Alec Baldwin. As in their previous adventures, the spunky toy vehicles survive their mishaps with a combination of quick thinking and help from their fellow vehicles. The hard-working Percy is irked at how dirty he gets hauling rock and coal until being trapped by an avalanche from a mine-shaft collapse puts things in perspective. Competition comes to the Island of Sodor when lorries (British for "trucks") with a bad attitude try to take the engines' places. But a series of accidents and breakdowns restores the engines to their rightful place.
