Backstreet Boys - Video Hits, Chapter One

Backstreet Boys - Video Hits, Chapter One from Jive

The Backstreet Boys' The Video Hits: Chapter One is an entertaining collection of video hits from their albums Backstreet Boys, Millennium, and Black & Blue. It's not an exact duplication of the companion CD, The Hits: Chapter One, as it lacks the video for "Drowning." Each video offers something unique, from sending up the Michael Jackson classic "Thriller" in "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)," to the sci-fi themed "Larger Than Life" to several straight-ahead performances with great sets, special effects, bare chests, and dance breaks. "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" is an especially moving tribute to the band's personal losses. "I Want It That Way" portrays a stylized road tour and "The One" shows a live performance. The best story video is "The Call," a tale of infidelity and seduction. --Larry Clark

Backstreet Boys - Homecoming: Live in Orlando

Backstreet Boys - Homecoming: Live in Orlando from Jive

The Backstreet Boys, who made the mold from which everything from 'N Sync to 98 Degrees has sprung, remain one of the hottest acts appealing to the prepubescent and barely pubescent females of America and the world. This 16-song set, taped in the band's hometown of Orlando, features a mix of old and new tunes before the release of their Millennium album. Each of the five heartthrobs in the group gets his solo turn, and almost all of them do teardrop-stained, teeny-bop love songs calculated to up the shriek level in the arena. Given the elaborate choreography and stage show, the camera work on this concert is spotty. It misses much of the Boys' dancing, and indeed the larger picture the five Boys create onstage, in favor of endless shots of tiny screaming teens. --Marshall Fine

Backstreet Boys - A Night Out with the Backstreet Boys

Backstreet Boys - A Night Out with the Backstreet Boys from Jive

A Night Out with the Backstreet Boys is a romantic, heartfelt, and intimate live performance recorded in Germany in 1998. An introduction with members Kevin Richardson and Howie Dorough explains that the Boys have always wanted to perform for their fans and themselves in an acoustic concert. Much like the well-known MTV Unplugged series, the Backstreet Boys perform with a full orchestra and a small choir for background vocals. There is no choreography, they do mostly ballads and mid-tempo songs, and most of the time they casually sit on bar stools. The group is exposed musically, providing the opportunity to show their fans and their critics that the Backstreet Boys "really do have talent."

Starting with "Who Do You Love," "As Long as You Love Me," and "10,000 Promises," there can be no mistaking that the Backstreet Boys do indeed have real musical talent. The solo section begins with Brian Littrell singing "That's What She Said/Where Can We Go from Here?" and accompanying himself on guitar, followed by A.J. McLean doing a soulful "Lay Down Beside Me." Nick Carter performs "I Need You Tonight" and Howie shines on "My Heart Stays with You." Kevin closes the solo section with a beautiful, untitled piano instrumental. Finally, the boys return to the stage for "Like a Child," the up-tempo "All I Have to Give," a medley of "If I Don't Have You/I'll Never Break Your Heart," "Quit Playing Games with My Heart," and a new arrangement of "Let's Have a Party." The stylish video versions of "All I Have to Give" and "I'll Never Break Your Heart" are also included to complete this 70-minute "night out." --Larry Clark

As the hours mount up, you can watch the boys wear down. While this is not a concert video, the boys treat their many fans to spontaneous a cappella choruses of "Shape of My Heart" throughout the tour. The one complete version of the song is compiled from these impromptu performances. Not as entertaining as All Access, this one is for fans who can't get enough Backstreet Boys. Backstreet Boys - All Access

Backstreet Boys - All Access from Jive

Here, in All Access, you learn there is a lot more to your favorite boy than meets the eye. Released in 1998, All Access is a noteworthy companion to the Backstreet Boys' 1997 CD, Backstreet Boys, representing eight songs from that album. "The Making of 'Everybody (Backstreet's Back)'" provides interviews with all the boys about the concept for the video (a tribute to Michael Jackson's "Thriller"), thoughts about each other, a look at how the video was filmed, and the music video itself. The music video for "As Long as You Love Me" is given a similar treatment, with more interviews and discussion of the video concept. Also included are a preview of the music video for "All I Have to Give" and the full-length studio versions of "Quit Playing Games (with My Heart)" and "We've Got It Goin' On." The concert versions included here are "Get Down (You're the One for Me)" and "Anywhere for You," from Germany, followed by a live version of "I'll Never Break Your Heart" recorded in Toronto. All Access is a real inside and up-close look at the boys behind that great sound! - -Larry Clark

MTV Total Request Live - Best of Carson

MTV Total Request Live - Best of Carson from Sony

The wildly popular afternoon video request show hosted by Carson Daly on MTV, a modern American bandstand featuring a live audience, appearances by pop stars, and a crowd of onlookers who clog the sidewalks outside the cable network's Times Square studio, is given both a "best of" and "behind the scenes" treatment in this video. Christina Aguilera appears in the studio to wiggle and lip-sync her way through "Genie in a Bottle," and a few boy bands, including 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, show up to look serious, croon their tunes, and make the young girls in the audience squeal and squirm. Seemingly as a deliberate counterweight to the carefully packaged entertainment that's a mainstay of the show, production personnel appear in interviews to talk about how the live show is spontaneous and often plagued by mistakes, including guests who don't show up on time and audience members whose behavior or language isn't exactly ideal for afternoon television. A remote segment with Limp Bizkit, whose heavily tattooed frontman Fred Durst ends his performance at a beach resort by literally blowing up a boat, seems to have been tagged on the end to counter the sugary quality of earlier performers. This is an entertaining look at the show, and those who wouldn't miss it every afternoon will no doubt love seeing how the show gets produced. --Robert J. McNamara
