Buddy Rich - Live in '78 (Jazz Icons)
from Tdk DVD Video
With his fiery polyrhythms and large-than-life persona, Buddy Rich was the last of the big-band drummers. This blistering 75-minute date from Holland (in 1978) features Rich's Killer Force ensemble (named after a Clint Eastwood movie). With saxophonists Steve Marcus and Gary Pribeck, trumpeter Mike McGovern, and trombonists Glenn Franke and Dale Kirkland as the primary soloists, Rich drives his men through eight selections of no-nonsense, straight-ahead jazz, which includes Sal Nestico's "You Gotta Try," John La Barbera's waltz, "Best Coast," and a melancholic rendition of Thelonious Monk's immortal ballad, "'Round Midnight." The Weather Report hit "Birdland" is given a run for its money, thanks to Rich's riveting rhythms, and the "Channel One Suite" features his best extended solo. The DVD is augmented by an informative 20-page booklet, which includes a Down Beat interview with Mel Torme, where Rich states, "I like to think of my solos as telling a story." Thanks to this document, new generations get to see and hear Rich's syncopated stories told through his relentless artistry in motion. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Classic Drum Solos and Drum Battles DVD
from Hal Leonard
A must for students and fans of jazz drumming, Classic Drum Solos and Drum Battles should also be seen by those whose exposure to drumming has been limited to crash-and-bang rock drummers, most of whom couldn't play a real solo if their paradiddles depended on it. The solos here are from separate performances recorded between 1957 and 1978. Those by Rufus Jones (who makes clear why his nickname was "Speedy"), Louis Bellson (whose trademarks are flawless technique and two bass drums), Joe Morello (the superbly musical drummer of Dave Brubeck's best quartet), and Buddy Rich (the most blindingly fast and powerful drummer of them all) are alone worth the price of the video. But you'll also see Art Blakey, Gene Krupa, Sam Woodyard, Cozy Cole, and seven other top jazz drummers of the mid-20th century--15 in all.
The "drum battles" are interesting enough--except the nonsensical one between Buddy Rich and Jerry Lewis (yes, that Jerry Lewis)--but they're not the reason for getting the video. Classic Drum Solos is nothing less than a history of jazz drumming presented in a series of uncut drum solos on a single, 60-minute videotape. With many of these drummers now gone, here's a rare chance to hear them again, in all their irreplaceable greatness. --Charles Smyth
This 60 minute DVD features fifteen of the true "legends of jazz drumming" in astounding extended solos and in rare, never-before-seen drum duels filmed over the last five decades. Among the highlights are uncut solos from big band legends Sonny Payne, Rufus Jones, Buddy Rich, Sam Woodyard and Louis Bellson as well as small group giants Art Blakey and Joe Morello. Rare drum battles include meetings between Gene Krupa and Cozy Cole, Buddy Rich and Ed Shaughnessy, Chico Hamilton, Gene Krupa, and Lionel Hampton, and a once-in-a-lifetime battle between Buddy Rich and Jerry Lewis!

Buddy Rich - At the Top DVD
from Hal Leonard
The bravura drumming of the indomitable Buddy Rich may not be the only thing to recommend about this video, but it's certainly the main attraction. Taped in February 1973 at a nightclub in Rochester, New York, the 65-minute performance reveals a virtuoso who was still at the top of his game at age 55. Rich's power, dynamics, and sheer musicianship leave little doubt that he was the leader of his big band in much more than name only. But while his young, mostly little-known musicians are all strong players (notwithstanding those horrible '70s haircuts), the arrangements are less than stellar. Their attempts to turn the likes of the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" and Paul McCartney's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" into swinging jazz outings are downright cheesy. Better to skip to the end, when Rich plays two superb solos on a West Side Story medley. --Sam Graham
This concert was recorded at The Top of the Plaza in Rochester, NY on February 6, 1973 and remanins one of the most sought after and influential shows ever recorded by Buddy. Special Feature includes three incredible bonus clips.
