Thanks in large part to its meticulous re-creation of the late-1960s and early-'70s rock scene and the uncannily authentic performance by Val Kilmer as legendary Doors frontman Jim Morrison, Oliver Stone's hypnotic film biography is standing the test of time. Capturing the carefree mood of the Age of Aquarius, the film charts the meteoric rise of the Doors on the California club circuit (including a memorable scene showing the creation of the hit "Light My Fire"), and chronicles the band's exploits with hallucinogenics and Morrison's battles against charges of public indecency on stage. Kilmer's performance is hauntingly perfect, and performances by Meg Ryan, Kathleen Quinlan, and Kyle MacLachlan are similarly impressive. The movie doesn't fully probe the depths of Morrison's character, but as a portrait of excess it is vividly true to the spirit of the self-destructive poet known to his fans as "The Lizard King." --Jeff Shannon

The primary content consists of three acclaimed films, all running about an hour long and directed by Manzarek, that give the viewer a deeper appreciation of what the Doors were all about. Not only was the band filmed in a variety of live concert settings (especially at the legendary Hollywood Bowl show, included here), but they were also precociously aware of the value of film, creating music "videos" long before MTV and taking their cue from Manzarek's mid-'60s stint as a UCLA film student. Also included are clips from several TV appearances (including a PBS interview in which Morrison predicts the future of recording technology with astounding accuracy), revealing backstage footage, and, of course, some of the most hypnotic concert performances ever filmed.

Two of Manzarek's student films (Evergreen and Induction) indicate that the keyboardist could easily have become a successful director, but fate blessed him (and us) with a future in one of America's all-time greatest rock bands. What The Doors Collection conveys more than anything is that these four young men formed a unique cohesion of talent, that they all loved and admired Jim Morrison (and still do), and that they continue to share that love--along with some conflicting recollections and amiably contrasting opinions--on a commentary track that's wise, fun-loving, and refreshingly free of drippy nostalgia. The Doors - Live in Europe 1968

For Doors completists only, this shapeless gathering of rare film clips of the band performing in Europe is hampered by the same old, frustrating problems with attempting to convey, through lousy camera work, the band's power as a live act. The packaging tells us the Doors swept through London, Stockholm, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam during a 1968 tour documented here, but there's no way to appreciate that save for a random clip or two of Jim Morrison milling about outside concert venues, talking with fans. Otherwise, we see the same sort of obfuscating on-stage close-ups of Morrison you can see in any footage of a Doors gig, stumbling around, crooning, and reciting poetry to minimalist accompaniment by Ray Manzarek on keyboards, John Densmore on drums, and Robby Krieger on guitar. Unless one can see, in the mind's eye, what the band is up to from the point of view of a kid in the 30th row, there's no way to really get the hypnotic, Dionysian effect for which the Doors were justifiably famous. Thus, for anyone who can imagine such a thing, or take it on faith, there's good reason to enjoy performances of "Spanish Caravan," "Five to One," and two versions of "Light My Fire." There's even a relic of pre-MTV, pop promotion: a silly-looking performance of "Hello, I Love You" shot before a baffled crowd on a London street. --Tom Keogh

The Girl Next Door

Twentieth Century Fox produced The Girl Next Door, an interesting 1953 musical about an unusual romance and its effects on the happiness of a young boy. June Haver stars as international stage sensation Jeannie Laird, who returns to America a major star after singing and acting in Europe. Her accountant (Dennis Day) has purchased a house on her behalf, and soon Jeannie finds herself neighbors with a widower, Bill Carter (Dan Dailey), a cartoonist raising a young son, Joe (Billy Gray). Despite her fame, Jeannie falls for the low-key Bill, and he feels the same, causing a crisis of jealousy for poor Joe. The film pretty much follows the course of their relationship and Joe's struggles to deal with the reality of a woman in his life. Between domestic crises in Bill's house, The Girl Next Door offers some lavish song-and-dance numbers featuring its two leads. The lanky Dailey is fun to watch, with his ever-present smile and gazelle-like movements, while Haver steams things up with her adventurous dancing and staging of different songs. Dennis Day is charming as an unlikely beau for Jeannie's best friend (Cara Williams), and his lovely voice makes one think of Irish tenors from glory days past. Special features include a brief documentary on Billy Gray, who later played Bud on Father Knows Best and whose career took a hit when he was popped for marijuana possession. --Tom Keogh

Steel Pulse started by playing concerts with punk bands as part of the Rock Against Racism movement popular in the late seventies. Subsequent releases and touring took the band to USA where they were to follow up their Grammy win of 1986 with a further nomination for a Grammy for the album "African Holocaust" in 2004. "Door of No Return" while being a track from the successful "African Holocaust" album is also the title of an in-depth documentary about the hugely successful British Reggae band.
