Message to Love - The Isle of Wight Festival

This documentary by Murray Lerner (From Mao to Mozart) was shot in 1970, but for many reasons was not shown to the public until 1995 in Great Britain. In an important way, it is the final chapter in an unofficial trilogy of concert films (along with Woodstock and Gimme Shelter) that together paint a picture of the highest and lowest points of Woodstock Nation politics: from mass goodwill to anarchy to outright stupidity. On the one hand, Message to Love is a rock & roll movie with several performances that are outright revelations (the Who's triumphant show, the Doors' "The End"), some that are awfully good (Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun"), and more than enough that are superfluous (Ten Days After, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Jethro Tull). On the other hand, Lerner's cameras are trained on the increasingly testy relationship between nomadic hippies who travel a long way to see the show but refuse to pay, and concert producers who resort to using guard dogs, cops, and aluminum walls to keep crashers at a distance. Just how bad does the mood become after several days of this? Check out the scene in which Joni Mitchell breaks down in tears after singing her ode to peace and love, "Woodstock," before this lot. In an era when we've become used to extraordinary security and high ticket prices at rock concerts, it's perhaps hard to grasp what the fuss was about at the Isle of Wight. But Lerner's amazing film helps a viewer get a sense of what was really at stake in that period before rock & roll was a corporate matter, and when kids naively thought it was theirs for the taking. --Tom Keogh

Reunited in the early nineties, ELP produced a new album, Black Moon, and began to tour again. In 1997 they embarked on a world tour, which included this performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 7. This is the only film from this tour that is available.

Emerson Lake & Palmer - Live at the Royal Albert Hall

Progressive rock's pioneering power trio still packed a musical wallop when Emerson Lake & Palmer recorded this 25th anniversary concert in London's Royal Albert Hall in October 1992. Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer had reunited to promote their studio album Black Moon, but the set list of this DVD, which differs from ELP's Albert Hall CD, is more of a "greatest hits" sampler, including such ELP standards as "Tarkus" and "Pictures at an Exhibition" (featuring an epic Palmer percussion solo), and Lake's still- beautiful ballads "From the Beginning" and "Lucky Man." Time had clearly taken its toll. Keyboard wizard Emerson rubs his wrists (which later required surgery) before forging ahead at full intensity (climaxing with his traditional "assault" on a Hammond organ), and Lake avoids high notes (most regrettably on "Pirates") to accommodate his mellowing voice. Still, the band's precision remains intact, and this DVD, despite a weak 5.1-channel sound mix, is a must-have for ELP's devoted fans. --Jeff Shannon

It was ELP's first proper live concert, their only previous gig having been a warm up in Plymouth the previous night. Playing in front of 600,000 people, at what remains the biggest festival in rock history, they became overnight stars with the press raving about their virtuosity and daring. They would go on from here to become multi-million selling artists, but this unique film is there right at the beginning.
