The Rutles 2 - Can't Buy Me Lunch

The Rutles 2 - Can't Buy Me Lunch from Warner Home Video

The Pre-Fab Four are back, and severely earnest television journalist S.J. Krammerhead (Eric Idle) is hot on their story once again in The Rutles 2: Can't Buy Me Lunch. A welcome sequel to Monty Python star Idle's 1978 mockumentary The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash, Can't Buy Me Lunch looks back on the mythical Liverpool quartet's long and winding road. Meet anew the group's caustic leader Ron Nasty (Neil Innes), cute bassist Dirk McQuickley (Idle), quiet guitarist Stig O'Hara (Rikki Fataar), and lovable drummer Barry Womble (John Halsey) as they sprint from the Cavern Club through "A Hard Day's Rut," "Tragical History Tour" and beyond. Krammerhead combines new celebrity interviews (Conan O'Brien, Tom Hanks, Bonnie Raitt) with re-edited footage and outtakes from the first film, and while the result isn't as sharp or urgent as Idle's original parody, Can't Buy Me Lunch has many funny moments and good inside jokes for Beatles enthusiasts. --Tom Keogh

Dirk. Nasty. Stig. Barry. Perhaps you've forgotten how unforgettable they are. Well forget that. Intrepid host/interviewer Melvin Hall is here to refresh the recall of all Rutlemaniacs! Eric Idle (Monty Python) portrays Hall plus writes produces directs and rumor has it prepares off camera some well-received bangers and mash for the crew in a sequel to "The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash." From concerts to backstage moments from successes (A Hard Day's Rut) to misunderstood flops (Tragical History Tour) from familiar tunes to those that make you wonder if you left the kettle on the whole great hilarious tale is here. Ricky Martin - One Night Only

Ricky Martin - One Night Only from Sony

Fans of Ricky Martin will need no encouragement to buy One Night Only other than knowing it exists, so it's commendable that what they will get is a pretty good package after all. On the down side, without the kind of slick studio production accorded to his albums it's clear that Martin's voice is, well, rather ordinary. But on the up side, he's beautiful, he's great fun, he's not short on stage presence, and his enthusiasm for the Latin music of his native Puerto Rico is entirely genuine.

There's a spooky moment in the opening number of this huge 1999 gig (which took place in Liberty State Park in New York) as the backdrop artfully falls to reveal the twin towers of the World Trade Center framing Martin like Samson's pillars. Once this frisson passes it's good times all the way, with the inevitable "Vida Loca" and "La Copa de la Vida" as highlights, plus guest spots from Carlos Santana and José Feliciano. --Roger Thomas

Party at the Palace - The Queen's Concerts, Buckingham Palace

Party at the Palace - The Queen's Concerts, Buckingham Palace by Geoff Posner from Opus Arte

The Party at the Palace concert is a motley assortment of has-beens and time-wasters, a curious number of whom felt it proper to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's 50 years by singing old Motown songs badly. The concert also features Lenny Henry shouting and an extended plug for Queen's (that's the band) risible musical We Will Rock You. Bewilderingly, Party at the Palace is not only redeemed, but made worth owning, by the four-song set by Brian Wilson, who gives a heartbreakingly earnest performance of "God Only Knows," accompanied by Andrea Corr. The concert ends with a pantomime version of "All You Need Is Love." Party at the Palace is the night rock & roll gave up. Proceeds from the sale of the DVD, "after the deduction of costs and expenses in relation to its production and distribution," will be donated to the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Trust. --Andrew Muller

This spectacular DVD features highlights from the Queen's Jubilee "Party at the Palace." Featuring: Sir Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Bennett, Dame Shirley Bassey, Joe Cocker, Phil Collins, The Corrs, Brian Wilson, Sir Elton John, Tom Jones, Annie Lennox, Ricky Martin, Rod Stewart, Steve Winwood, and more!

An All-Star Tribute to Brian Wilson

An All-Star Tribute to Brian Wilson by Bruce Gowers from Image Entertainment

This celebration of Beach Boys guiding light Brian Wilson, recorded in March 2001 at New York's Radio City Music Hall, may be the best tribute concert ever. Wilson himself appears toward the end of the 90-minute show; he's game, but after decades of mental problems, he's not what he once was. It's his admirers who take the event to another level. Backed by the remarkable Wondermints, a diverse lineup (Ricky Martin, the Go-Go's, Billy Joel, Aimee Mann and Michael Penn, Wilson Phillips--with Brian's two daughters--and others) perform both obvious ("California Girls") and more obscure ("I Just Wasn't Made for These Times") Wilson material. And then there are Elton John ("God Only Knows"), Vince Gill ("The Warmth of the Sun"), Paul Simon ("Surfer Girl"), Heart's Wilson sisters ("Good Vibrations"), and Carly Simon, David Crosby, and songwriter Jimmy Webb ("In My Room"), who turn in performances that are, quite simply, among the greatest of their careers. Transcendent. --Sam Graham

He is the Mozart of pop, the Orson Welles of rock, the George Gershwin of his generation. You'll see and hear exactly why on An All-Star Tribute to Brian Wilson, a celebration of Wilson's artistry held at New York's famed Radio City Music Hall on March 29, 2001. This once-in-a-lifetime gathering of superstars and legends takes us on an amazing musical journey through an unparalleled body of work--and along the way, we learn the uplifting story of the heroic survivor who has brought us a lifetime of "Good Vibrations." Songs: Our Prayer (Boys Choir of Harlem), California Girls (Ricky Martin), Help Me Rhonda (Ricky Martin), Surfer Girl (Paul Simon), Surf City (The Go-Go's), In My Room (David Crosby, Carly Simon, Jimmy Webb), The Warmth of the Sun (Vince Gill), I Get Around (Evan and Jaron), God Only Knows (Elton John), I Just Wasn't Made for These Times (Aimee Mann, Michael Penn), Don't Worry Baby (Billy Joel), Sail On Sailor (Darius Rucker, Matthew Sweet), You're So Good to Me (Wilson Phillips), Good Vibrations (Heart, Jubilant Sykes, Boys Choir of Harlem), Surf's Up (David Crosby, Vince Gill, Jimmy Webb), Heroes and Villains (Brian Wilson), Wouldn't It Be Nice (Elton John, Brian Wilson), Barbara Ann (Brian Wilson, Ensemble Cast), Fun, Fun, Fun (Brian Wilson, Ensemble Cast), Love and Mercy (Brian Wilson). 96 minutes.

Ricky Martin - Europa (European Tour)

Ricky Martin - Europa (European Tour) from Image Entertainment

He shakes his bon bon! He lives la vida loca! He probably even bangs, too! But if you're expecting to see or hear Ricky Martin singing the songs by those names, you're going to be disappointed. That's because Europa chronicles the Martin phenomenon as it was in 1997, when his audience was still largely Spanish-speaking and before he recorded his huge crossover hits. And since the bulk of this 70-minute concert-cum-documentary was filmed in Spain (other countries such as Germany, Italy, and France are visited, but most of the actual performances appear to be in front of Spanish audiences), the Puerto Rico-born singer sings entirely in his native language.

That doesn't do much to improve the quality of the songs, which are standard-issue pop; only "Susana," with its gentle reggae vibe, and the international hit "Maria," with its catchy "Un Dos Tres!" chant, do much to distinguish themselves. And the truth is that Martin isn't much of a singer in any language. But he's a generous, enthusiastic performer who genuinely seems to love being on stage and to appreciate the adulation and various perks that come with being a pop star. --Sam Graham

See Ricky Martin as you have never seen him before: up close and personal. Travel with him on his sold-out European concert tour. Feel like you're a part of the exuberant crowds that dance and sway to his mesmerizing rhythms and gyrations as he performs his songs in different venues across Europe. Swoon to his sultry songs and sensual charisma in this exhilarating production featuring eight great performances and a bonus video clip. A must-have collector's video! Songs: No Puedo Mas, Bombom De Azucar, Nada Es Imposible, A Medio Vivir, Susana, Dime Que Quieres, Maria, Te Extrano 2. 70 minutes.
