Admit it: you never thought you'd be buying a video with the word potty in the title. But it's been months, and while Junior seems to love his potty, he doesn't actually do anything in it. This video expands upon the popular children's book by the same name in two ways: there's a sing-along potty song and a 13-minute doctor's statement for parents. The director of child psychiatry at a prominent New York hospital will calmly reassure you that it's perfectly normal for Junior to be taking his sweet time letting go of the diapers, and that's worth a lot. And the animated retelling of Joshua's potty progress is good, too. But it's the "music video" of the oh-so-catchy "Potty Song" that makes this half-hour tape. Now, both of these two cheerfully animated cartoons are also available as DVDs to make toilet training a little easier on both parents and kids. One DVD tells a little boy's story of potty-training success; the other tells a girl's story. Prudence--the round-cheeked, pony-tailed heroine of Alona Frankel's book of the same name--can provide further inspiration to young daughters with her video adventure. As with her print counterpart, the animated Prudence wonders if her grandmother's gift could be a birdbath or a flowerpot before she settles down to the business at hand. Unlike the book, Prudence gets a grand introduction in the form of a music video of "The Potty Song," complete with toddlers frolicking among portable potties. Before that it's singing and dancing by bigger kids, potty-sitting by the youngsters, a diaper-wearing chimp doing both, and cartoon interludes. The songs address all aspects of potty training from washing hands, to sticker rewards, to toilet-training's role as a rite of passage. The reggae-drenched "Bye Bye Diapers, Hello Fun" and "Me Potty Wotty" are infectious and the rap-infused "I Have the Power" is positively soulful.
