VeggieTales - Heroes of the Bible - Lions, Shepherds and Queens (Oh My!)

VeggieTales - Heroes of the Bible - Lions, Shepherds and Queens (Oh My!) from Big Idea

The first of two "best of" VeggieTales programs packs together 75 minutes of the Christian-lite group into one volume. The three stories here include "Daniel and the Lion's Den" from the first VeggieTales video, Where Is God When I'm Scared?, and complete programs of Dave and the Giant Pickle and Esther, the Girl Who Became Queen. All three tales illustrate the VeggieTales' creed at its best: entertaining stories from the Bible with a good deal of wackiness that make the lessons go down easy--for both kids and grownups. "Daniel" showcases the remarkable variety of original music the series produces, while Dave may be the quintessential VeggieTales episode. Each segment begins with energetic youngsters discussing the themes. --Doug Thomas

What do you get when you cross vegetables with classic Bible stories? You get courageous cucumbers, ambitious asparagus and heroes of epic proportions! VeggieTales Bible Heroes: Stand Up! Stand Tall! Stand Strong! is a 75-minute compilation featuring the following stories: - Dave and the Giant Pickle - Esther: The Girl Who Became Queen - Daniel and the Lions? Den

    Jonah - A VeggieTales Movie

Jonah - A VeggieTales Movie by Mike Nawrocki from Lions Gate

Parents seeking kid-friendly, Christian entertainment can be comfortable letting their kids watch Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie, which turns the characters from the biblical story of Jonah into a bunch of talking cucumbers, asparagus, peas, and other vegetables. When God instructs the prophet Jonah to go to the wicked city of Ninevah to spread His word, Jonah balks and tries to flee by ship--only to end up in the belly of a whale. When he finally consents to go to Ninevah, things don't turn out quite the way he expects. The VeggieTales team uses computer animation and upbeat musical numbers to express Christian themes, but they do so without being painfully didactic. The animation (and the humor) isn't as sophisticated as that in Toy Story or Shrek, and kids may find some elements of the story confusing, but this may provide an opportunity for parents and kids to discuss values. --Bret Fetzer

                VeggieTales - Where's God When I'm S-scared?

VeggieTales - Where's God When I'm S-scared? from Big Idea

Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber host another winning episode in this Christian-lite animated series aimed at 3-9 year olds, combining parable and parody in two lessons about fear. After watching a scary Frankencelery movie, Jr. Asparagus works through his fears of darkness and monsters to learn that "God is bigger than the Boogie Man." In Daniel and the Lions' Den, our cast of rollicking vegetables performs a highly engaging adaptation of the classic Bible story. Larry the Cucumber stars as God's humble and faithful servant Daniel. A supporting cast of green onions and asparagus--wisemen gone bad--sing their way to Daniel's fate: "We could use him as a footstool or a table to play Scrabble on then tie him up and beat him up and throw him out of Babylon." Co-creators Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki expertly combine classical, rock, jazz, and funk music with bold, energetic 3-D computer animation and plenty of witty dialogue. --Liane Thomas

In these two stories, kids learn that God is bigger than the boogie-man, and can even close the mouths of lions! Tales from the Crisper What happens when 5-year-old Junior Asparagus watches a Frankencelery movie that's a little too scary for him? Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber come to the rescue with a rollicking song, teaching Junior that God is bigger than anything he might be afraid of. Daniel and the Lion's Den The second segment takes us to ancient Babylon as the VeggieTales characters stage a musical adaptation of a classic Bible story. Larry the Cucumber, playing the role of Daniel, finds himself in deep trouble thanks to the King's conniving wisemen, played with zest by a trio of slippery scallions. In the end, Daniel learns that even in the lion's den, he is still in God's hands.

Veggie Tales: Josh and the Big Wall!

Veggie Tales: Josh and the Big Wall! by Phil Vischer from Big Idea

Larry the Cucumber has slept in late. But that's all right because the plucky Jr. Asparagus is at the ready to narrate the story of the wall of Jericho with Bob the Tomato. This half-hour computer-animated video from the VeggieTale folk is another bouncy retelling of a traditional Bible story. We follow Josh (alas, Larry appears!), who has taken over for Moses leading the Israelites to the Promised Land. In their way is the city of Jericho, full of nasty French peas armed with purple slushies to lob below. Focusing on being obedient to God's wishes, this video has more Christian gist than most and is a bit long (the tales are better when they're shorter), but for any fan, it's a keeper. There are plenty of hip songs, and Larry puts his own slant on receiving word from a messenger of God. The Silly Song with Larry segment is one of the silliest: "The Song of the Cebú." --Doug Thomas
