Music in High Places - Collective Soul (Live from Morocco)

Music in High Places - Collective Soul (Live from Morocco) from Image Entertainment

In this easy-going video, members of Collective Soul explain that they'd never played an acoustic set until they made this four-day journey to Morocco for the series Music in High Places, but you'd never know it from the quality of their playing. While the Roland brothers (vocalist Ed and rhythm guitarist Dean) join lead guitarist Ross Childress with their unplugged six-strings, percussionist-bassist Will Turpin and drummer-percussionist Shane Evans play indigenous instruments to form a tight, acoustic rhythm section. The simple premise of the series (sending first-rate musicians on expeditions to ancient landmarks around the world) is surprisingly effective, and the production values are impeccable, without losing focus on the music (like the hit single "December") that Collective Soul is famous for.

Of the dozen songs performed, two are new, five are from Blender, three from Collective Soul, and two from Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid. While this may disappoint devotees of Dosage, these songs have a cohesive quality that blends well with the band's musical stops in the Sahara desert, a 700-year-old casbah, the market of Marrakech (an outdoor highlight), and elsewhere. Ed Roland's belief that rock & roll should be fun is expressed in the band's overall demeanor: they're talented but not too serious (except, perhaps, when Roland objects to having a monkey on his shoulder). Even on rainy days, the Moroccan landscape is breathtaking, and while the group's spoken observations are mostly innocuous, it's clear that this was a special experience for all involved, and that feeling comes through clearly in this recommended video. --Jeff Shannon

Music in High Places - Brian McKnight (Live from Brazil)

Music in High Places - Brian McKnight (Live from Brazil) from Image Entertainment

As Brian McKnight points out, the "Music in High Places" series presents artists performing "without a net." There are no "smoke and mirrors" that can disguise a lack of ability nor can anything be "corrected" in post-production. This installment takes place in the scenic, rural community of Sao Luis, Brazil, rather than in a big city like Sao Paulo. It isn't a collection of videos, but rather a combination of acoustic performances and commentary from McKnight about his music and travels. Although he doesn't perform any Brazilian songs, he incorporates a samba-like beat into several of his own mid-tempo R&B-flavored numbers about love and spirituality. For McKnight fans, this is essential viewing--an opportunity to get to know the man as though you were there. The feeling is spontaneous and unrehearsed, even if McKnight and his crew had to work long and hard to create that impression. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Music in High Places - Deftones (Live in Hawaii)

Music in High Places - Deftones (Live in Hawaii) from Image Entertainment

Part of MTV's Music in High Places series of location performances, Deftones: Live in Hawaii features the Sacramento nu-metal grungemeisters in largely acoustic mode on Hawaii's Big Island. The idea of the series is to combine travelogue with "unplugged" performance, although this episode is interspersed with full electric treatments of Deftones songs.

The travelogue element of the show is very fine, considering the relatively low-tech cinematography. We see whales leaping from the evening ocean, volcanic steam tumbling at speed over vertiginous clifftops, turtles paddling through crystal clear water, molten lava slithering across quasi-lunar landscapes. Unfortunately, the members of Deftones come over a bit Beavis & Butt-head in the face of all of this natural beauty ("A whole lot of lava, man, it was really cool"). The very presence of these plump, goateed, combat-trousered nu metallurgists feels like a sort of desecration of the spirituality of Hawaii. That said, their acoustic performances of songs like "Knife Party" and "Digital Bath" feel much stronger and soulful than the disappointingly generic electric versions. So maybe some Hawaiian atmosphere did rub off after all. --David Stubbs

Music in High Places - Boyz II Men (Live from Seoul)

Music in High Places - Boyz II Men (Live from Seoul) from Image Entertainment

In this part of the Music in High Places series, Boyz II Men go to wintry South Korea where their modern R&B sensibility meets traditional Korean culture, resulting in a surprisingly simpatico series of acoustic performances. Boyz II Men perform some of their most popular songs, including "End of the Road," "Step On Up," and "On Bended Knee." The latter two are performed in the Chin Sul Fencing Stadium during which children and young adults display the grace and power of tae kwon do. While in a conference room in the Demilitarized Zone, the group sings "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" into microphones that are broadcast into North Korea. In addition to the beautiful locales and well-done photography, the charm lies not only in how much the group enjoys experiencing another culture, but how much the military personnel and locals enjoy hosting them. --Dana Van Nest

Music in High Places - Alanis Morissette Live in the Navajo Nation

Music in High Places - Alanis Morissette Live in the Navajo Nation from Image Entertainment

Her eccentricities mark her as an acquired taste, but Alanis Morissette has always ignored what others see as the fashionable or commercial thing to do. Live in the Navajo Nation, an hour-long distillation of her musical and cultural discoveries while visiting the Navajo Nation in America's great Southwest, is a case in point. Morissette observes and absorbs what she sees, Navajo history, spirituality, and culture providing the impetus for her own creativity. Amid these grand vistas, Morissette's own music takes on a more personal bent: accompanied only by acoustic guitar, percussion, and her own flute or harmonica, several songs from her second album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, take on new life, including standouts "U R" and "I Was Hoping." Even the wrong-headedly literal "Ironic" takes on amusingly earnest implications in this setting. Also included is a five-minute behind-the-scenes featurette. --Kevin Filipski
