The Riches - Season 1

The Riches - Season 1 from 20th Century Fox

Minnie Driver and Eddie Izzard star in this well-received FX series based on the concept of what happens when a family of traveling con-artists finds its way into a wealthy suburban community fooling everyone around them into thinking they belong while trying to convince themselves of the same thing. Driver plays Dahlia Malloy a wife and mother who at the start of the series has just been released from prison for a crime her husband conman Wayne (Izzard) committed. Understandably bitter Dahlia self-medicates and steals to protect her children ending up on the run from a scary crew of extended family. When a crazy coincidence gives Wayne and Dahlia the keys to a new life and a new identity they seize it mistakenly figuring life in the suburbs will be a piece of cake. Like a mixture of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES WEEDS and Coen-brothers comedy THE RICHES has the potential for wide appeal. This set contains all 13 episodes from the show's premiere season including the pilot.System Requirements:Run time: 161 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS Rating: NR UPC: 024543488057 Manufacturer No: 2248805

British comedian Eddie Izzard (Glorious, Dressed to Kill brings his raffish charisma to The Riches, a sneaky satirical drama about a family of con artists who lie their way into a wealthy gated community. Wayne and Dahlia Malloy (Izzard and Minnie Driver, Grosse Pointe Blank) are travelers--a kind of American gypsies--who get in trouble with their clan and have to hit the road with their three kids (Shannon Woodward, Noel Fisher, and Aidan Mitchell). When a confrontation with other travelers causes a deadly car accident, the Malloys take over the dead couple's brand-new home--a mansion bought over the Internet--and assume the lives of Mr. and Mrs. Rich. The premise stretches plausibility, but that's part of the fun; any successful con game forces the mark to accept something absurd, because why would anyone tell such a preposterous lie? The pleasure of trickery drives the show. Wayne weasels his way into a job as lawyer to an obnoxious real estate developer; Dahlia persuades a private school to admit her kids after the admission deadline; and the kids find their skills serve them well in the surface-obsessed suburban world. But over the course of the thirteen-episode season, the Malloys' wily architecture of lies grows increasingly precarious, constantly threatened by fear of exposure and vengeful travelers. The final episode builds to a nerve-wracking crisis as someone who actually knows the dead couple comes to visit. Ironically, some of the most compelling moments are flashes of honesty--in an early episode, oldest son Cael realizes that the traveler girl he loves has set him up, and the two stare at each other across a diner table, wordlessly brokenhearted. The entire cast is great--Woodward shines as smart, conflicted daughter Di Di, and Margo Martindale (Paris, je t'aime, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story) routinely steals scenes as the Rich's unhappy neighbor. But The Riches rests on Izzard's shoulders; though Driver's acting chops are more polished (and her Southern accent is more consistent), Izzard captures the soul of a man who lives by his wits, a man who navigates the world with a wink and a stream of beguiling words. The Riches - Season 1 includes a couple of chatty commentaries and flimsy featurettes, but the best extra is a series of short webisodes of Izzard teaching Woodward and Fisher assorted cons; the family chemistry is delightful. --Bret Fetzer

    Rob & Big - The Complete Seasons 1 & 2 (Uncensored)

Rob & Big - The Complete Seasons 1 & 2 (Uncensored) by Mark S. Jacobs from Paramount / MTV

Less asinine than Jackass and more "real" than The Hills, MTV's reality series Rob & Big is an entertaining diversion that mixes friendship and a few crazy stunts into each episode. In this four-disc box set, all 16 episodes from the first two seasons of the show are included. Rob Dyrdek may not be the most famous skateboarder out there, but he is charismatic, funny, and apparently has the means to charter a private jet so he can fly off to pick up his new puppy Meaty. Christopher "Big Black" Boykin is Rob's best friend and bodyguard. Boykin's size often is used as a visual gag, but he's rarely presented in a mean-spirited fashion. Even when he's showing off his girth in a G-string (don't ask), he's clearly in on the joke. The show is built around the odd couple premise of the long-time friends. But like Snoop Dogg's Father Hood, the episodes' most enjoyable elements aren't the crazy antics, but the everyday slices of life that the characters experience. Watching Dyrdek return home to the Midwest where his family clearly misses him is rather touching. And seeing Boykin's relatives prepare for a family reunion is a lot of fun. There are some episodes that obviously are set up for the cameras: Would the pals actually have purchased a time machine if they weren't being filmed to do so? And would anyone really buy a minature horse to keep their dog company (or listen to a dog psychic that tells them they need a woman in the house)? Clearly, no. But the point is that the duo has a show and knows how to entertain its audience. And instead of focusing on contrived romances or feuds with frenemies, this reality series focuses on friendship. There's also an added dose of reality when the stars of the show aren't always treated as such. The look on Dyrdek's face when he's described in a newspaper as a "C-lister" is priceless not because it's true, but because he understands his role in the Hollywood food chain. --Jae-Ha Kim

In the first two seasons of this reality buddy comedy from MTV and Jeff Tremaine of Jackass fame, professional street skater Rob Dyrdek and his best friend and bodyguard, Christopher "Big Black" Boykin, share a house in the Hollywood Hills, bouncing from one ridiculous moment to the next. Along with their mischievous little Bulldog, Meat Bag, aka "Meaty" and their Mini Horse, the unlikely crew make the world their playground and hit the streets on a constant quest for adventure and laughs. On this uncensored DVD, see even more from TV's favorite new odd couple. With all 16 episodes, a ton of bonus scenes and way more Rob and Big than we were allowed to show on TV, this DVD is a must have for anyone who simply can't get enough of this series.

One Tree Hill: The Complete Second Season finds life in an uproar for virtually every major and minor character in the WB series set in One Tree, North Carolina. Basketball sensation Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray), illegitimate son of One Tree Hill's resident J.R.-like figure, car dealer, and all-around monster Dan Scott (Paul Johansson), has left town with his Uncle Keith (Craig Sheffer) to start a new life. (Keith himself has split One Tree to nurse a broken heart after his marriage proposal to Lucas's mom, Karen, played by Moira Kelly, was rejected.) It's not long, however, before Lucas has second thoughts, prompted in part by Dan's recent heart attack and the mess he (Lucas) left behind with two girls, Peyton (Hilarie Burton) and Brooke (Sophia Bush). Meanwhile, Lucas's half-brother, Nathan (James Lafferty), has married the former's lifelong best friend, Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz), a union approved by the bride's parents but not by Nathan's mother, Deb (Barbara Alyn Woods). (It should be mentioned that Nathan and Haley, as with nearly every other young person on this show, are not yet high school seniors. They only look much older.)

All that's just the first couple of episodes of season 2. In the remaining 21, Dan temporarily fools everyone into believing he's a changed man following his cardiac crisis. In fact, he's worse than ever, trying to wreck Nathan and Haley's marriage, attempting to buy Lucas's loyalties, driving Deb into a drug-addicted stupor, pulling the rug out from beneath Keith (who took over Dan's dealership during the latter's illness), and waging a war, of sorts, with basketball coach Whitey (Barry Corbin) for influence over Nathan's destiny. While all this is going on, Haley leaves Nathan to join a music group, Peyton finds success running an all-ages night at a new club opened by Karen, Lucas finds evidence that Dan is cheating the IRS, Brooke's once-wealthy parents go broke, and actress Sheryl Lee (Twin Peaks) turns up toward season's end playing a mysterious visitor with a surprising connection to a major character's past. Whew. If One Tree Hill's first season succeeded in part because series creator Mark Schwahn kept, for a while, a tight focus on the early, rocky relationship between Nathan and Lucas, the second season works as a frenetic, ensemble drama with elements of camp and absurdity. The above-mentioned reference to Dallas villain J.R. Ewing proves apt in more ways than one. The final episode of One Tree Hill's sophomore season ends with its own, not-so-subtle variation on the classic who-shot-J.R. cliffhanger, leaving open to debate which of many possible One Tree candidates might have committed a foul (if understandable) bit of vengeance against a certain bad dude one loves to hate. --Tom Keogh

                  Dangerous Crossing (Fox Film Noir)

Dangerous Crossing (Fox Film Noir) by Joseph M. Newman from 20th Century Fox

                    DANGEROUS GROSSING (DVD MOVIE)

A relaxing cruise turns into a terrifying journey in Joseph M. Newman's Dangerous Crossing. Part of the Fox Film Noir series, Newman's classy B-movie plays more like a psychological thriller with some particularly atmospheric visuals (heavy on the studio-generated fog). As her honeymoon begins, newlywed Ruth Bowman (Jeanne Craine, Pinky) explores the ship while husband John (Carl Betz, The Donna Reed Show) runs an errand. On deck, a friendly divorcée warns Ruth, "You mustn't let him out of your sight--husbands can get lost so easily." (The familiar-looking sets were recycled from 1953's Titanic and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.) Hours later, John hasn't returned, and no one has seen him. Ruth's inquiries uncover an empty room, a missing passport, and her spouse's absence from the passenger list. All signs point to delusion. Ruth's plight brings her to the attention of Dr. Paul Manning (the elegant Michael Rennie, The Day the Earth Stood Still), who offers to help in any way he can. Though Ruth confesses to a brief bout with depression, there's nothing else in her background to indicate instability, but that disclosure leads Manning to the real cause of her distress. Based on John Dickson Carr's 1943 radio play Cabin B-13 and shot in 19 days, Newman (This Island Earth) conjures up as much intrigue as Alfred Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes. The excellent extras include comprehensive commentary from Fox historian Aubrey Solomon, a short featurette (Peril at Sea: Charting a Dangerous Crossing), several stills galleries, and the original theatrical trailer. --Kathleen C. One Tree Hill - The Complete First Season

One Tree Hill - The Complete First Season by Bryan Gordon from Warner Home Video

One Tree Hill: The Complete First Season marks the beginning of a genuinely engrossing series that maintains, for a long while, an unusual focus on a single, powerful conflict defining the destinies of two characters. Adolescent half-brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty) Scott have lived parallel lives in One Tree, North Carolina. They share a common father, Dan Scott (Paul Johansson), who has disregarded the existence of Lucas, his son by a one-time flame, Karen (Moira Kelly), whom he dumped years before to accept a basketball scholarship to college. While neglecting Lucas, Dan--whose hoop dreams never materialized--has spent his time almost perversely micro-managing every one of Nathan's moves on and off the court at his old high school, where the lad is currently an arrogant superstar under gruff-but-wise coach Whitey Durham (Barry Corbin). Nathan (whose mother is separated from Dan) is a child of privilege and has been raised to disregard teamwork, compromise, or the feelings of others. He regards Lucas, a basketball sensation on neighborhood playgrounds, as trash, and his own girlfriend, Peyton (Hilarie Burton), as a pretty bauble he can abuse and dismiss at will. Still, he's sympathetic; one can see glimpses of the human being struggling to emerge from under Dan's control.

Meanwhile, Lucas helps Karen run her café, hangs out with platonic best friend Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz), and pines for Peyton (herself a punky misfit at heart). He also turns to surrogate dad Keith Scott (Craig Sheffer)--actually his uncle and Dan's older brother--for support, and sees himself as a perpetual and doomed outsider in One Tree. All that changes when Whitey invites Lucas to join the b-ball team that Nathan dominates, a move that challenges the status quo of multiple relationships in a small community. For about a third of its episodes, this series from creator Mark Schwahn (who wrote the hit film Coach Carter) stays true to the suspense surrounding Lucas's and Nathan's changes in fortune. Then a bit of padding follows to the end of the season; there are 22 episodes to fill out, after all. But even as various distractions (a kidnapping subplot, a car accident and coma for a major character) and random events creep in (Dan, rather incredibly, takes over the team from Whitey at one point, thus coaching both his sons), One Tree Hill remains highly watchable. The writing is shaped well and organic, while performances are consistently excellent. (It's especially good to see Sheffer, perhaps best known for A River Runs Through It, again.) --Tom Keogh

Same town. Same team. Same father. Different lives. Half-brothers rival each other on and off the basketball court in the wildly popular high-school drama that tallied a whopping 185% audience growth among W18-34 from it series premiere to the first season finale.
