ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) - Barely Legal
by Ron Buffone
from Geneon [Pioneer]
The first Extreme Championship Wrestling pay-per-view production is immortalized on this disc, which returns the viewer to the hellish confines of the ECW Arena in Philadelphia in the spring of 1997. Stars of the upstart federation square off in a variety of matches, and the action is relentlessly brutal and bloody. The Dudley Boyz kick things off by battling the Eliminators for the tag team championship, but it really takes a few matches for things to get nasty. And when they do, watch out! Shane Douglas and his sidekick in a thong, Francine, get a wicked surprise from Ravishing Rick Rude. And Sabu and Taz, meeting in the "Grudge Match of the Decade," bloody each other while taking their epic battle into the crowd (which loves having the action brought even closer) before ending up with a table-smashing finish. A "three-way dance" featuring Terry Funk, the Sandman, and Big Stevie Cool features a ladder being put to some creative uses. And eventually the evil slacker Raven turns up in the ring to battle Terry Funk, who bleeds so profusely he needs medical attention. That doesn't daunt Raven, who naturally assaults the doctor with a table before resuming the battle with Funk. The over-the-edge wrestling in ECW won't be to everyone's liking, but the real hardcore fans will love Barely Legal. --Robert J. McNamara

ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) - Deep Impact Uncensored
from Geneon [Pioneer]
This anthology of wrestling mayhem from Extreme Championship Wrestling promises an "emotional barbed wire hell," and it delivers. In one gory match, Terry Funk, whose specialty is taking more punishment than any sane person could stand, meets the evil and vicious Sabu in a ring surrounded with barbed wire. In their battle for the ECW World Heavyweight championship, it doesn't take long for them to be smeared with blood, beating the hell out of each other while hopelessly entangled in strands of wire. It eventually takes several men with tools to cut them free as the announcer proclaims that the action just witnessed is too brutal to ever be shown on television. In another match Steve Austin, before he became "Stone Cold" and attained primetime stardom, battles in a "three-way dance" with other notorious bad asses Mikey Whipwreck and the Sandman. And Mick Foley, in his "Cactus Jack" persona, tangles with Terry Funk and gets burned (literally).
Bonus footage includes an "aerial war" between Japanese and Mexican wrestlers that provides some diversion from the usual hardcore brutality, and in what's billed as the "Original Catfight," bad girls Beulah McGillicuddy and Francine drive the crowd wild by shedding all civility along with most of their clothing. While the production of this DVD is reasonably professional, that doesn't detract from the decidedly gnarly and low-rent feel ECW fans adore. Fans of more tame and cartoonish wrestling should be warned that the blood does flow freely in some of these matches. --Robert J. McNamara

ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) - Extreme Evolution (Uncensored)
from Geneon [Pioneer]
Some of the wildest action of Extreme Championship Wrestling, an organization that prides itself on being the cutting edge of professional wrestling, is contained in this extravaganza in which men (and even a few women) beat the hell out of each other with chairs, tables, barbed wire, and, you bet, even some wrestling moves. Such ECW luminaries as Rob Van Dam, Mike Awesome, and Tommy Dreamer appear in matches that certainly look far more brutal than the usual wrestling fare found in shows put on by the WWF or WCW. Billed as uncensored, the competitors on this video generally wind up bloody, which isn't too surprising considering how many steel folding chairs go zinging through the air. When Mike Awesome power bombs an opponent through a folding table, the energized crowd packed into the dingy ECW arena gleefully breaks into a resounding chant. The centerpiece of this video is the classic barbed-wire match fought in 1996 between ECW stars Sandman and the Raven. The barbed wire enclosing the ring soon becomes the weapon of choice, and both men are reduced to bleeding messes before several tables get smashed and the loser is the man rendered most senseless. You have been warned, this material isn't for everyone. But those who love ECW will be in chair-shot heaven. --Robert J. McNamara

ECW: Extreme Championship Wrestling - Path Of Destruction (Uncensored)
from Geneon [Pioneer]
"If it's blood you want, it's blood you're gonna get," screams Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) play-by-play announcer Joey Stiles. He's talking about the hardcore "Glass Match," which features two men sticking their taped hands in glue and then glass shards before doing battle... But, really, he could just as well be summing up all of ECW. Unlike the World Wrestling Federation and World Championship Wrestling, ECW eschews flash and overwrought soap operas and focuses on brutal mutilation and, occasionally, some wrestling moves. This compilation tape (a follow-up to the extremely successful ECW: Extreme Evolution) of five matches showcases what makes ECW so popular among rabid wrestling fans. The collection starts with a four-man title match (featuring Chris Jericho, 2 Cold Scorpio, Pit Bull #2, and Shane "the Franchise" Douglas) that runs over 40 minutes and challenges any notions that these guys aren't athletes. It's exhausting. The centerpiece, however, is the Stairway to Hell match, featuring Sabu vs. Sandman. As you watch Sandman, head wrapped with barbed wire and gushing blood, repeatedly cane Sabu with a 4-foot stick, your month will just hang open. Perhaps the biggest star here, however, is Stiles. He's a maniac announcer with hilarious catch phrases like "Oh my gaaawwd!" sounding like South Park's Cartman calling wrestling. "Why watch bad boxing pay-per-view? You got ECW!" he bellows, and who can argue? --Dave McCoy

ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) - The Best of Cactus Jack
by Ron Buffone
from Geneon [Pioneer]
Before wrestler Mick Foley became known as the lovable freak, Mankind, in the WWF, and before he became a two-time bestselling author, his crazy antics as Cactus Jack in the ECW made him legendary. The short-lived independent promotion ECW stood for Extreme Championship Wrestling, but the twisted acts Foley pulled off in the mid '90s took "extreme" to a whole new, warped level. This two-and-a-half hour-long feature highlights all of gap-toothed, one-eared Jack's most famous feuds and matches (including those with the Sandman, Tommy Dreamer, Sabu, and former mentor Terry Funk) and his somewhat touching friendship with the lovable wimp, Mikey Whipwreck. You get Jack putting people through tables, Jack attacking foes with barbed wire, and Jack being pummeled with wood sticks, crutches, chairs, bottles, and even a flaming branding iron! Suffice to say, this is bloody stuff and not for the weak of heart. --Dave McCoy
"Cactus Jack", the most violent of Mick Foley's personalities invoking imagery of violence, bloodshed and sheer, uninhabited brutality. He is a performer who went above and beyond the call of duty to achieve victory, leaving logic and sanity behind in order to accomplish his goals. When Cactus Jack competed, two things were guaranteed: all out mayhem and a hospital ride for his unfortunate opponent."
Whether Mick Foley was ripping apart arenas or engrossing fans with his one of a kind interviews, it was impossible to deny that there may never have been a performer who exemplified the hardcore, in your face style of Extreme Championship Wrestling.
This is, for the first time anywhere, the complete story of Mick Foley's Extreme Experience.
