In Hayao Miyazaki's magical Kiki's Delivery Service, a 13-year-old girl meets the world head on as she spends her first year soloing as an apprentice witch. Kiki (Kirsten Dunst) is still a little green and plenty headstrong, but also resourceful, imaginative, and determined. With her trusty wisp of a cat Jiji (a gently subdued Phil Hartman) by her side she's ready to take on the world, or at least the quaintly European seaside village she's chosen as her new home. Miyazaki's gentle rhythm and meandering narrative capture the easy pulse of real life (even if his subject is a girl flying high upon a broomstick) and charts the everyday struggles and growing pains of his plucky heroine with sensitivity and understanding. Beautifully detailed animation and the rich designs of the picture-postcard seaside town of red-tiled roofs and cobblestone streets only add to the sense of wonder. This charming animated fantasy is a wholesome, life-affirming picture that doesn't speak down to kids or up to adults. --Sean Axmaker

King of the Hill - The Complete Sixth Season

King of the Hill's sixth season, one of the best of this underappreciated animated series, is anything but "the same-old same-old" (Hank's euphemism for regularly scheduled Tuesday-night sex with his wife, Peggy). Fun-loving son Bobby (Pamela Adlon) and "nerd" neighbor Connie (Lauren Tom) break up (albeit amicably). "Renaissance woman" Peggy (Kathy Najimy) stirs up rebellion at the local Renaissance Faire. Luanne (Brittany Murphy) becomes the unwitting member of a cult. Conspiracy theorist Dale (Johnny Hardwick) discovers his father working in a gay rodeo. Through it all, Hank Hill (series creator Mike Judge) struggles to hold on to his core beliefs. It's not easy. "My wife lies to me, my beer company betrays me, Americans are giving Mexicans diarrhea," he complains in "Beer and Loathing." "What the hell's going on here?"

But not to worry. We can count on Hank, one of TV's few good men, not to waver. In the episode "Joust Like a Woman," a season benchmark, he is a vigilant father. "No tights, tassels, or skirts on the boy," he directs Luanne as he puts her in charge of the Renaissance Faire spending money, adding, to Bobby's disappointment, "Oh, and no bells." And he is a devoted husband, accepting "King Philip's" (regally voiced by Alan Rickman) jousting challenge to defend Peggy's honor. "No chump in a velvet costume is ever kickin' my ass," Hank declares. There's no two ways about it, as one Asian character looking for a token Caucasian observes in "A Man Without a Country Club." Hank is "super-white." In "Bobby Goes Nuts," another classic episode (and the sixth season is loaded with them), Hank beams after Bobby beats up a bully at school, thanks, he believes, to "good old American YMCA know-how." He is therefore shocked when he discovers that Bobby's been attending a self-defense class for women, and kicking his victims "below the belt" (while screaming, "Let go of my purse"). No matter how his sensibilities are offended, Hank manages to keep an open mind and heart. When aspiring comedian Bobby sells a joke to Branson's own Yakov Smirnoff in "The Bluegrass Is Always Greener," Hank is compelled to admit, "That is a good joke; it's Branson good." "You gotta be real, Bobby. Get in touch with your white roots. So advises African American comedian and driving-school instructor Buddha Sack (voiced by Chris Rock) in the episode "Traffic Jam," and in its second season, King of the Hill mines this fertile territory for some of the funniest and sharpest comedy writing on television. But it's the pitch-perfect ensemble, led by series co-creator Mike Judge as forthright Hank Hill and Kathy Najimy as the formidable Peggy Hill--that also gives King of the Hill a heart as big as Texas itself. Hank struggles to be the voice of reason in a world that often just "ain't right."

In "Hilloween," Hank rallies the town after a lawsuit by a fundamentalist (voiced with hellfire by Sally Field) shutters the local haunted house and abolishes trick or treating. In "Hank's Dirty Laundry," the tenacious Hank is forced to immerse himself in adult video after a video store computer's false claim that he rented and did not return "Cuffs & Collars" sullies his credit rating. Hank may he hard-headed, but, unlike Homer Simpson, he is never a buffoon. His literal nature provides some of these episodes' biggest laughs, as witness his attempt to one-up put-down artist Buddha Sack in "Traffic Jam": "Your mother's hair is short, it looks like she's not a woman at all, but more like a man." In season 2, Hank continues to look for common ground with his misfit son ("How To Fire a Rifle Without Rally Trying"), and romance begins to blossom between Bobby and neighbor Connie ("The Son That Got Away"). But it is the throwaway moments that provide some of the series' giddiest delights. In "The Unbearable Blindess of Laying," Bobby is introduced to the Jewish idiom. "You said, 'You I like' instead of 'I like you,'" he tells his grandmother's new boyfriend. "That's funny." --Donald Liebenson

King of the Hill - The Complete Fifth Season

For steadfast and forthright Hank R. Hill ("Not that Hank P. Hill who doesn't pay his Discover Card bill," he clarifies), these are the times that try men's souls: His presidential candidate of choice, George W. Bush, has a limp handshake. His wife, Peggy, and son, Bobby, prefer charcoal grilling to his precious propane. And a new co-worker from Oklahoma is hustling on the side, casting the clueless Hank (voiced by series creator Mike Judge) as her pimp. But the pleasure of King of the Hill is that we can always count on Hank to do the right thing by his town, his friends, his family, and his country. If he heads for the border to keep niece Luanne (Brittany Murphy) from voting Communist (she likes the candidate's red tie), we know he will turn the car around and make it to the polls with a minute to spare. If he gives Arlen High School's star football player an A so he will be eligible to play in the state tournament, we know he will be moved to stand up for his wife, Peggy (Kathy Najimy), who originally flunked him. And if Alabaster Jones (from Oklahoma City) comes to reclaim his "ho," we can be reassured that Hank will "mack daddy" him down.

King of the Hill's fifth season chronicles another momentous year for Bobby (Pamela Segall), who turns 13, is disgraced, but finds redemption, as the school mascot, and saves the life of a drowning pig at the county fair ("Not this pig, not today!"). Pitiable Bill Dauterive (Stephen Root) continues to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune, as his faithless ex-wife Lenore returns to louse up his budding romance with, yes, former governor Ann Richards (as herself), and he takes in a delinquent who takes advantage of him ("All the books about parenting are by comedians," he laments, "and I never know when they're kidding or when they're serious."). King of the Hill continues to fly under the radar. This three-disc set's only extra is a brief sneak preview of the series' tenth, and final, season. That's seemingly more effort than Fox's cracked marketing team expends on this underappreciated treasure. But check out season 5. When it comes to brilliantly funny character-based comedy, keen social satire, and virtuoso voice work, nobody messes with Texas. --Donald Liebenson

Join "Beavis and Butt-head" creator Mike Judge and former "The Simpsons" writer/producer Greg Daniels as they mosey on back to the land of the Rio Grande, where Hank is wondering if he should vote for a fellow Texan in the presidential election. Later, while Bobby wishes he were older, Dale sues the tobacco company in an attempt to get money for his wife's face-lift so she can look younger. But the real horror comes when Hank gets devastating news about his birth and the future of his pick-up truck!

King of the Hill - The Complete Third Season

With the Huxtables long gone, the Hills of Arlen, Texas, may just be television's most functional family. They are certainly one of the funniest as they struggle to appreciate "the little things in life while some big things are wrong and evil," as "sweet and trusting" Peggy learns in the classic episode "Peggy's Headache," in which Peggy is the last to discern that Dale's wife has had a decades-long affair with John Redcorn. Likewise, in "Death and Taxes," Peg is conned by an alleged former student, now a Death Row inmate, to unwittingly smuggle him cocaine. Hank, who is aptly described at one point as "a good husband with a good head on his shoulders," is the lone voice of reason in "Nine Pretty Darn Angry Men," in which he joins a focus group to rate a new "yuppified" model of his beloved lawnmower. At least he has come to terms with his son Bobby's desire to become a prop comic, and his wistfulness at the prospect of Bobby one day leaving home in "Hank's Cowboy Movie" is just one of many "sweet family moments" that elevate this series. The third season is a pivotal one for Bobby, whose coming-of-age misadventures include his devastating first adolescent crush on an older student in "And They Call It Bobby Love," a father-son hunting trip in "Good Hill Hunting," becoming Connie's boyfriend in "Love Hurts... And So Does Art," and marriage (don't ask) in "The Wedding of Bobby Hill."

The Simpsons gets all the glory, but I'll tell you what, the writing in King of the Hill is no less incisively brilliant, its core ensemble no less indelible, and its star power no less impressive. Guest voices this season include Mary Tyler Moore as the new minister in "Revenge of the Lutefisk," Sarah Michelle Gellar in "And They Call It Bobby Love," Billy Bob Thornton in "Nine Pretty Darn Angry Men," Buddy Ebsen in "A Firefighting We Will Go," Uta Hagen, Betty White, and Phyllis Diller in "Escape From Party Island," and, as himself, a very gracious Chuck Mangione in "Death of a Propane Salesman." Unlike the previous two sets, there are no extras; but who needs commentaries? Such benchmark episodes as "To Spank With Love," in which Peggy is dubbed "Paddlin' Peggy" after spanking an unruly student, eloquently speak for themselves. --Donald Liebenson

King of the Hill - The Complete Fourth Season

Television, nay America, needs more men like Hank Hill, a stalwart, decent "fella" who, he proudly proclaims in the episode, "Movin' On Up," "keeps his yard free of debris and pays his bills on time." But a world that just ain't right keeps testing his moral fiber. In the two-parter "Hanky Panky"/"High Anxiety," Hank finds himself embroiled in a scandalous case of sex, drugs, and murder. In "Little Horrors of Shop," Hank is outraged to learn that his son Bobby's school has turned shop class into a study hall ("All parents care about these days is zero tolerance, drug policies, and literacy," the dejected principal tells him). In "Transnational Amusements Presents: Peggy's Magic Sex Feet," his unwitting wife Peggy's 16 ½-inch feet become the featured attraction on an Internet fetish sight. Biology, too, continues to vex the buttoned-up Hank, as witness one of the season's best episodes, "Aisle 8-A," in which Connie, the daughter of Hank's contemptuous Laotian neighbor, Kahn, is left in the Hills' care, and Hank must deal solo with her first period. Hank has somewhat come to terms with his misfit, but well-adjusted son's desire to be a comedian. He can get behind Bobby's comedy troupe, "The Propaniacs," but he is mortified when he learns that Bobby is secretly performing as a rodeo clown in "Rodeo Days." Hank does, however, breathe a sigh of relief that Bobby likes girls after Bobby and Connie are caught in a compromising situation by Connie's strict and over-protective parents in "Naked Ambition."

In its fourth season, King of the Hill is really cooking with propane, I'll tell you what, as Peggy rebounds from her skydiving accident to win her third Substitute Teacher of the Year Award, pathetic Bill Dautereive reclaims his high school football record, and clueless Dale's wife Nancy ends her decades-long affair with John Redcorn. The guest voices this season are particularly impressive: Meryl Streep , Reese Witherspoon, Drew Carey, Don Meredith, Kathleen Turner, Heather Locklear, and, in "Peggy's Fan Fair," a stellar roster of country artists, including Vince Gil, Clint Black, Randy Travis, and, um, Tony Danza. --Donald Liebenson
